Tangier

Tangier puts Africa right at the end of the gangway. Ships dock at Tanger Ville, the city port beside the medina — not at Tanger Med, about 50 km away. The old town and the kasbah sit above the harbor, close enough to walk. What takes planning isn’t the distance. It’s deciding, before you step off, whether you want a guide, and which one.

Tangier in brief

Tangier is a short hop from Spain on the map, and a long way from it once you’re inside the medina walls.

Cruise ships use the passenger terminal at Tanger Ville, the old city harbor. It’s run by SGPTV SA, the Tangier City Port Management Company, and it handles ferries to Spain, France and Italy too.

Check which Tangier port your ticket names.

Tanger Med is a separate, much larger port about 50 km along the coast, nearly an hour away by road. Cruise ships calling at “Tangier” dock in town, at Tanger Ville — the one you want.

The port reconversion plans put the cruise quay in the city center, next to the medina. They also describe extending Dock 5 to about 620 meters, room for two ships at once — a plan on paper from a decade ago, so we can’t say how much of it is built.

Shuttle buses and taxis wait at the terminal. The medina is close enough that you can skip both — your feet will do.

The day is mostly about the old town.

Celebrity describes the kasbah, the walled fortress at the top of the medina, as about 400 years old. Below it, the medina’s lanes are full of craft workshops, stalls and cafés.

Further out, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules sit on the Atlantic corner of Africa, about 14 km west of the city. You’ll need a car or a tour for those, not your feet.

Which tours earn their fare, and when a guide booked ahead beats one found at the gate, is covered in our Tangier shore excursion guide. Read it before you book anything on board.

Short walk
Up to the medina

The medina rises right behind the harbor. We found no published walking time or distance from the gangway, so we won’t print one — expect slopes and steps, not a flat promenade.

The UK says petty crime is common in medina quarters. Canada suggests keeping to the main lanes.

What's nearby, broadly

The medina The kasbah Kasbah Museum American Legation Museum Kasbah Contemporary Art Space The Corniche Cap Spartel Caves of Hercules Asilah Tetouan Chefchaouen

The medina, the kasbah and their museums are the walkable part of that list. The American Legation Museum is at 8 Rue d’Amérique, inside the medina.

Le360 calls the Legation the only US National Historic Landmark outside the United States. For American passengers, that makes it an easy pick.

Celebrity also points to the Corniche, the seafront road, for a meal. Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules are a drive west.

Asilah, Tetouan and Chefchaouen are full excursions in their own right — Princess lists Chefchaouen at about 8½ hours, so it’s a whole port day, not a side trip.

Commonly reached from

Tangier turns up mostly on spring and autumn western Mediterranean and repositioning sailings — our map’s reading of the schedules, not a published season. Nearby calls we cover include Gibraltar, Málaga, Cádiz and Lisbon. Celebrity says its Morocco calls usually come on longer Mediterranean cruises of about 11 to 12 nights. October 2026 alone shows about 25 calls on CruiseMapper, from Celebrity, Norwegian, Costa, P&O, Saga, TUI, Viking, Explora Journeys, Ritz-Carlton, Ponant, Star Clippers, SeaDream, Crystal, Scenic, Hapag-Lloyd and Ambassador, among others. In our own sailing data, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity include it on three transatlantic crossings that leave Miami and Fort Lauderdale for Barcelona in April 2027. See where it fits on our Mediterranean cruises hub.

Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

Dirhams stay in Morocco.

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Canada’s travel advice says it’s illegal to take dirhams out of the country, and that they can’t be exchanged outside it.

So change only what you’ll spend in a day, and keep the exchange receipt — reconverting leftovers needs proof you bought them in Morocco.

Cards work in bigger shops, and euros and dollars are often taken. For small purchases and tips, carry some cash.

Taxis: agree the fare or watch the meter.

We found no published taxi fare for Tangier, and we won’t guess one.

The UK’s advice is to agree a fare before you set off or check the meter is running. It also warns that petit taxi drivers often pick up other passengers on the way.

Ride-hailing cars may be unlicensed, and police can order you out of one. Take a taxi from the terminal rank, not an app.

Guides: ask for the badge.

The UK says people posing as official guides commonly approach tourists, especially in the medinas. A licensed guide carries an official badge and permission from the local authority, so ask to see it.

A polite, firm no is fine. Settling on one guide before you leave the port saves you saying it all day — and keeps the walk friendly.

Entry and safety for US travelers.

The US Embassy in Rabat shows the State Department’s Morocco advisory at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, “due to risk of terrorism,” with some areas at higher risk. We checked it on October 28, 2026 — the advisory page itself wouldn’t load that day.

Read the full advisory on travel.state.gov before you sail, along with its visa, passport-validity and blank-page rules. Your cruise line may set its own passport rule as well.

For comparison, Canada’s advice for its own citizens (updated May 26, 2026) says to exercise a high degree of caution, with regional advisories, and asks for a passport valid at least six months beyond the day you leave Morocco — a Canadian rule, not a US one.

Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are the risks the UK and Canada name first. Keep your bag in front of you in the lanes.

Dress and photos.

The UK suggests loose clothing that covers arms, legs and chest. Women traveling alone may get unwanted attention.

Ask before you photograph people, children above all — the UK’s advice, and good manners. Photographing near political or military sites is illegal.

Sources: the US Embassy in Rabat’s travel advisory summary (checked October 28, 2026); CruiseMapper’s Tanger Ville port page and October 2026 schedule; AIVP on the Tanger Ville port reconversion; Ferryhopper on Tanger Med and Tangier Ville; Royal Price Tracker’s Tangier page; Celebrity Cruises’ Morocco cruises page; the UK FCDO’s Morocco safety page; Global Affairs Canada’s Morocco advice (updated May 26, 2026); legation.org; Le360 on Tangier’s museums; Showcaves.com on the Caves of Hercules — all consulted October 28, 2026. The current travel.state.gov Morocco advisory and the advisories index both returned errors that day, so no US advisory level or US entry rule is printed here. No terminal shuttle fare or walking time is published.

Tangier FAQ

Can I walk from the cruise ship into the Tangier medina?

Yes. Ships dock at Tanger Ville, the city port right below the medina, and Celebrity describes the medina as within easy reach of the terminal.

Nobody publishes an exact walking time. The lanes climb toward the kasbah — wear proper shoes.

Does Tangier tender?

No. Cruise ships dock at the Tanger Ville passenger terminal, which the city port shares with ferries.

Is the cruise port at Tanger Med or Tanger Ville?

Tanger Ville, in the city. Tanger Med is a separate port about 50 km along the coast, close to an hour by road.

Do I need a guide in Tangier?

Not to walk the medina, but many visitors prefer one. If you hire one on the spot, the UK advises checking for an official badge and permission from the local authority.

People posing as guides are common, the UK says. Booking a licensed guide or the ship’s walk ahead of time keeps the decision off the street.

What currency do I need in Tangier?

Moroccan dirhams. It’s illegal to take them out of Morocco, so change small amounts, keep the receipt, and spend what’s left before you reboard.

Bigger shops take cards. Euros and dollars are often accepted too — but prices in the lanes are set in dirhams, so carry some.

Do US citizens need a visa for Tangier?

Check the visa and passport rules on travel.state.gov’s Morocco page before you sail. It wouldn’t load for us on October 28, 2026, and we won’t quote entry rules from an out-of-date copy — the advisory level we could confirm, through the US Embassy, is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution.

Ask your cruise line too — it sets the passport validity it’ll accept at check-in.

How much is a taxi in Tangier?

No official fare table is published that we could find. Agree the price before you get in, or make sure the meter is on — and expect a petit taxi to pick up other riders along the way.

How far are the Caves of Hercules from the port?

About 14 km west of the city, at Cap Spartel. Showcaves.com listed foreign adult entry at 60 MAD in 2023 — check the price on the day.
