Bodrum

Bodrum is a docking port with a castle at the far end of the promenade. Ships tie up at Kumbahçe, on the east side of town, and the center is about a mile (1.5 km) along the water — mostly level, about 20 to 30 minutes on foot. The Castle of St. Peter and its shipwreck museum sit on the point beyond. The Mausoleum is in town too, and it shuts on Mondays.

Bodrum in brief

Bodrum sits on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, on Türkiye’s southwest Aegean coast.

Ships berth at Bodrum Cruise Port, which Global Ports Holding has run since 2008. Its finger pier takes two large ships at once, with four berths along about 690 meters of quay and a size limit of about 350 meters per ship.

You walk off. No tender.

The terminal has duty-free shops, travel agencies and a restaurant — a place to wait, not a sight. Step outside and you’re on the east side of town, with the waterfront curving toward the castle.

CruiseMapper puts the center about 1.5 km away, roughly 20 minutes along the water, and the bazaar and castle about 20 to 30 minutes.

The sea shuttle is the one thing to confirm.

Global Ports Holding lists a free sea shuttle. CruiseMapper describes a port-authority boat to the castle at extra charge, and says it isn’t guaranteed. Ask at the gangway which one is operating on yours, and what it costs.

Most of what you came for is on foot.

The castle, the Mausoleum, the Ancient Theater and the Myndos Gate all sit in or above the old town.

The bays and islands are another matter — you reach those by boat, not by bus.

Our Bodrum shore excursion guide weighs the boat days against the walking day. Open it before you pay for a coach to a castle you could walk to.

What's nearby, broadly

Castle of St. Peter Museum of Underwater Archaeology Mausoleum at Halicarnassus Ancient Theater Myndos Gate Bodrum windmills Bazaar & marina Kara Ada (Black Island) Orak Island Gümüşlük Yalıkavak Etrim village

The first six on that list are in town or just above it — a day on foot with a taxi for the hills.

Kara Ada and Orak Island are boat trips from the harbor, not stops you drive to. Gümüşlük, Yalıkavak and the weaving village of Etrim sit out on the peninsula, which is dolmuş or taxi country. Yalıkavak runs about 20 km from Bodrum by road — a ride, not a stroll.

Bodrum sits on Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean itineraries, on the same coast as Kuşadası and a short hop from Rhodes; Istanbul is the big turnaround port to the north. October 2026 alone lists Marella, Ambassador, Royal Caribbean, Emerald, Windstar, Azamara and Silversea, and CruiseMapper reports about 119 calls planned for the 2026 season. Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

The lira is the currency, but museum tickets for foreigners are priced in euros.

The Ministry of Culture’s museum listings quote €20 for foreign adults at the castle museum and €3 at the Mausoleum. Carry a card that works abroad, not just a pocket of lira.

Buses and dolmuş want a contactless card, not cash.

Bodrum’s bus terminal guide says cash is officially no longer accepted on city buses and dolmuş minibuses. Contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay work instead, and tourists don’t need a local transit card.

Taxis run on the meter.

No official fare from the pier is published. The meter decides, cards are accepted, and fares can climb in summer traffic — so ask for a rough figure before you set off.

Mondays shrink the sightseeing.

The Mausoleum and the Ancient Theater both list Monday as their closing day. Plan a Monday call around the castle and the water — the castle museum’s listing doesn’t name a closing day, though it’s worth a check before you go.

The US advisory is Level 2 — increased caution.

The State Department’s Türkiye advisory, issued June 9, 2026, sits at Level 2. Its Level 4 warning covers the area within about 6 miles (10 km) of the Syrian and Iraqi borders, well away from Bodrum. Read the full advisory for the reasons behind Level 2 before you go.

US passport holders don’t need a visa for tourist stays of 90 days or less. The passport has to be valid six months beyond your date of entry, with a blank page for stamps. Türkiye isn’t in the EU, so the EU’s entry systems don’t apply here.

Hours change with the season.

The castle museum’s listing gives 08:30 to 22:00 from June 1 to October 1, and 08:30 to 17:30 the rest of the year, with the ticket office closing earlier. Check which schedule your call falls in — late October is already on winter hours.
