Carnival Sunshine

She was Carnival Destiny — the first cruise ship ever built over 100,000 tons. A $155 million refit in 2013 gave her a new name and the biggest water park in her class.

Carnival Sunshine in one read

Carnival Sunshine has a genuinely historic pedigree: launched in 1996 as Carnival Destiny, she was the first cruise ship ever built over 100,000 gross tons, breaking a size record that had stood since the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth in 1940. In 2013, a 49-day, $155 million refit at Trieste, Italy rebuilt her from the inside out and relaunched her as Carnival Sunshine — with the largest WaterWorks water park in her class (5 slides) and a full SkyCourse ropes course.

She sails from Norfolk, Virginia, and a genuinely unusual change is confirmed for 2027: a seasonal Mediterranean and North Africa season starting that May, including Carnival's first-ever calls in Tunisia and Morocco and a special solar-eclipse sailing timed to the August 2027 eclipse — before shifting to a seasonal Galveston, Texas base that November.

Where she sails

Durable pattern, not a fixed schedule — and a confirmed, genuinely unusual change is coming, so verify your exact sailing.

Norfolk now, then a real detour. Sunshine currently sails year-round from Norfolk, Virginia. Carnival has confirmed she begins a seasonal Mediterranean and North Africa season starting May 15, 2027 — a transatlantic crossing from Norfolk to Dover, then Barcelona and Civitavecchia (Rome) sailings through October 2027, including Carnival's first-ever calls in Tunisia and Morocco, plus a special solar-eclipse cruise from Barcelona timed to the August 2, 2027 eclipse.

She then shifts to a seasonal Galveston, Texas homeport from November 17, 2027. If you're booking 2027 or beyond, confirm exactly which season and homeport applies to your date — this is one of the more complex deployment pictures in the Carnival fleet.

The original record-breaker, genuinely rebuilt

Her 2013 refit wasn't cosmetic — it added 141 new staterooms and suites, genuinely increasing her tonnage from 101,353 to 103,881 GT. That's real reconstruction, not a repaint.

Cabins & suites

What's aboard

  • Standard interior, ocean view, balcony and Carnival's usual suite tiers, plus 141 staterooms and suites added in her 2013 refit.
  • Cabin finishes reflect a genuinely modernized 1996 hull — more current than her build year alone suggests.

Worth knowing

  • There's no Havana or Family Harbor on this ship — both are later-class features.
  • Carnival markets her at 103,881 gross tons, carrying roughly 3,002 guests at double occupancy — the largest of the three Sunshine-class sisters.

Same 1990s-era platform, three genuinely different refits — here's how her sisters compare.

07

The honest read

Sunshine holds a 4.0 out of 5 Cruise Critic member rating, with sub-category scores trending a bit softer around 3.5. She doesn't appear in Cruise Critic's official best-or-worst Carnival ships feature at either end. Independent aggregate rankings disagree with each other on exactly where she lands relative to her sisters — one ranks her highest of the three, another ranks her lowest — which we're reporting rather than resolving for you.

The honest read: she's a genuinely large, well-invested-in ship for her age, with the class's biggest water park and a real, substantial 2013 rebuild behind her. Her upcoming 2027 deployment changes are worth building into any advance planning — this isn't a "sail from Norfolk forever" ship anymore.

08

Our verdict

Sunshine is the pick if you want the most water park and the fullest activity lineup of the three Sunshine-class sisters, plus genuine interest in her unusual, confirmed 2027 Mediterranean and North Africa season. Her real 2013 rebuild — not a cosmetic refresh — backs up her case as more than just an old hull with a new name.

Book her for the activities and the itinerary variety; if you want the simplest possible short getaway, her sisters Sunrise and Radiance are the more straightforward picks. Her godmother, Lin Arison, matriarch of Carnival's founding family, christened her in 2013.

Quick answers

Is Carnival Sunshine the same ship as Carnival Destiny?

Yes — Carnival Sunshine is the same hull as the original Carnival Destiny (1996), renamed after a $155 million refit in 2013. She is NOT the same ship as the new Carnival Destiny debuting in 2029, which is an entirely different, unrelated new ship reviving the historic name.

Does Carnival Sunshine have a ropes course?

Yes — a full SkyCourse ropes course, part of her SportSquare complex. Her sister Carnival Sunrise does not have this feature.

Where does Carnival Sunshine sail from?

Norfolk, Virginia currently. Carnival has confirmed a seasonal Mediterranean and North Africa season starting May 2027, then a seasonal Galveston, Texas homeport from November 2027.

Is Carnival Sunshine an old ship?

Her hull dates to 1996, but she underwent a genuine $155 million rebuild in 2013 that added 141 new staterooms and suites, the class's largest water park, and a full ropes course — more substantially modernized than her build year alone suggests.

What's Carnival Sunshine's signature venue?

A 3-deck atrium waterfall feature, unique to her among the three Sunshine-class ships, added during her 2013 refit.
