Fremantle

Your ship docks at Fremantle, not Perth — and for a port day that’s the better address. The Fremantle Passenger Terminal sits on Victoria Quay, about a 15-minute walk from the town center. The prison, the museums, the cafe strip and the Rottnest ferry are all within reach on foot. Perth itself is about 23 km up the road, so seeing the city means a train, a car or a tour.

Fremantle in brief

Fremantle is a port town, not a suburb — one that happens to sit next to a capital.

Ships berth at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal on Victoria Quay, at the mouth of the Swan River. Fremantle Ports calls it Australia’s largest cruise terminal, and the occasional ship uses D Berth along the same quay instead.

Most calls tie up at F Berth, one of four quay berths, and the terminal can handle two ships at once.

The town is the easy part of the day.

Visit Fremantle puts the walk to the center at about 15 minutes. Volunteer ambassadors usually meet arriving passengers with maps, and the terminal has brochure racks for the rest.

Fremantle Prison, the two WA Museum sites and the cafe strip are all in that walkable core — a full day on its own if you want it.

Perth is the part that needs a plan, not just a pair of shoes.

The city center is about 23 km away, roughly 30 minutes by road. Transperth trains run from Fremantle station, about 10 minutes’ walk from the terminal, so the trip costs a single fare, not a taxi meter.

Kings Park and the Swan Valley wineries are what most ship tours sell here. Rottnest Island and its quokkas are the other big draw, and those ferries leave from B Shed, a short way along the same quay as your ship.

Which of those tours earn the fare is sorted out in our Fremantle shore excursion guide. Read it before you book a coach to anything you could walk to.

What's nearby, broadly

Fremantle Prison WA Maritime Museum WA Shipwrecks Museum E Shed Markets Cappuccino Strip Fremantle Town Hall Fishing Boat Harbour B Shed & Rottnest ferries Kings Park, Perth Swan River Swan Valley

The first half of that list is a Fremantle walk. The Maritime Museum and E Shed Markets sit on Victoria Quay itself, and the prison, Town Hall and cafe strip are in the center. Kings Park and the Swan River are in Perth — a train ride away, not a stroll. The Swan Valley is the far one, about 30 minutes beyond Perth, which is why it usually comes as a tour.

Commonly reached from

Fremantle is the cruise port for Perth and the Western Australia stop on Australia circumnavigations, world voyages and Indian Ocean crossings. Crown Princess opened the 2026–27 season on October 18 on a 28-day trip around the continent, heading north to Broome and the Kimberley. Holland America’s Noordam is due December 5–6 with an overnight, Viking Orion on December 29 and Oceania’s Riviera on January 7, 2027 — a thin season, mostly port calls. That changes in 2027–28, when Sapphire Princess homeports here with nine round trips. See the wider region on our Australia & New Zealand cruises hub, or open Fremantle on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Practical notes

Current as of October 23, 2026 Review periodically

Australian dollars, and card is the easy way to pay.

The currency is the Australian dollar. Visit Fremantle’s luggage lockers, for one, take cards only — A$12 per locker per day.

The State Department asks you to declare cash over AUD 10,000 coming in or going out, which a port day won’t come close to.

Tap your card on Transperth, and go free on a Sunday.

Transperth runs train, bus and ferry on one fare. A Go Anywhere ticket is A$3.50 cash for three hours across the whole network, and a contactless card pays the same cash rate, capped at that amount.

Every Sunday, travel is free with a SmartRider or a contactless card. Cash riders still pay, and bus drivers don’t give change.

Taxis queue at the terminal, but no port fare is published.

There’s a rank outside the building, and Uber, Ola and Didi all work here. Agree on the price or check the app before a long run to Perth or the Swan Valley.

The US advisory is Level 1.

The State Department rates Australia Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in an update of August 18, 2026. It calls the country generally safe and singles out ocean hazards such as rip currents.

You need a visa or an approved Electronic Travel Authority before you arrive — including on a cruise. Sort it out well before you fly.

Plan for strong sun, not a mild harbor breeze.

Visit Fremantle tells cruise visitors to bring hats, sunscreen and water and to check the weather before going ashore. The 2026–27 season opened in October and runs into the southern summer — take that advice literally.

Fremantle. Perth’s center is about 23 km away, roughly 30 minutes by road.

Itineraries often list the stop as “Perth (Fremantle)” — it’s the same berth.

Is there a free shuttle from the Fremantle cruise terminal?

On some calls. Fremantle Ports describes a free loop to the train station about every 20 minutes, from an hour after the ship berths until 4 pm.

Visit Fremantle says it depends on the ship and its passenger numbers, so check on board.

There’s a rank outside the terminal and rideshare apps work — confirm the price before you leave.

Is Fremantle safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department rates Australia Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in its August 18, 2026 update.

Its bigger warnings are about the ocean — rip currents and marine life — not the streets.
