Hobart

Hobart is a docking port with the city close by. Ships tie up at Macquarie Wharf, within 800 meters of the CBD — the waterfront, Salamanca Place and the ferry to MONA are all reachable on foot. The catch is calendar, not distance. MONA shuts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Salamanca Market only runs on Saturdays. Check your call day against both before you plan anything else.

Hobart in brief

Hobart is about as easy as an Australian port day gets — once you know which day it is.

The port takes up to two cruise ships at once, at up to 349 meters long. The main cruise berth is Macquarie Wharf No. 2/3, and a second ship goes to the multiuser berth at No. 4/5.

Your berth decides the first few minutes, not the whole day.

From the ship it’s about a 400-meter walk to the Macquarie Wharf No. 2 Cruise Terminal on Hunter Street. That’s where the visitor information desk, the free Wi-Fi and the taxi rank are.

From there the CBD is close — an easy 800-meter walk.

Ship tours don’t leave from the terminal, though. The excursion coaches line up alongside the ship at the berth — so if you’ve booked one, don’t walk off toward town first.

Two things run on a timetable you can’t change.

MONA, the private art museum up the Derwent, opens Monday and Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. It’s closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Salamanca Market fills Salamanca Place every Saturday from 8.30am to 3pm. Any other day you still get Salamanca Place — just not the 300-plus stalls.

Port Arthur is the third big name, and it isn’t close. The site itself says to allow about 90 minutes each way by road — a day trip, not a detour.

Which tours earn their fare and which you can run yourself is what our Hobart shore excursion guide sorts out. Read it before you book through the ship.

On foot from the ship

Docked
Macquarie Wharf No. 2/3

The primary cruise berth, 328 meters long. The cruise terminal sits on Hunter Street, alongside it.

Docked
Macquarie Wharf No. 4/5

The multiuser berth that takes a second ship. It’s a secure zone, so a private driver needs clearance through the ship’s agent to meet you there.

∼400 m
Berth to the cruise terminal

Inside: visitor information, amenities, free Wi-Fi and the Hobart Artists Market stalls.

∼800 m
Port to the CBD

That’s for the port as a whole. Your exact walk depends on the berth.

30 min
MONA ferry from Brooke Street Pier

About 30 minutes each way, from $30, with first sailings at 9.15am. A museum ticket is separate.

Taxi rank
Outside the terminal forecourt

Right outside, with overflow cabs at the Port Tower. Ask the driver for a rough fare before you set off.

What's nearby, broadly

Salamanca Place Salamanca Market (Saturdays) Battery Point Franklin Wharf & Constitution Dock Brooke Street Pier Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens MONA kunanyi/Mount Wellington Richmond Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary Mount Field National Park Port Arthur

The first five are waterfront ground, and the terminal is the place to start. MONA is a 30-minute ferry from Brooke Street Pier. kunanyi/Mount Wellington rises to 1,271 meters behind the city and needs a bus, a car or a tour. Bonorong is about 30 minutes north by road. Port Arthur is the long one — roughly 90 minutes each way, so it eats most of a port day.

Commonly reached from

Hobart turns up on Australia and New Zealand itineraries — if yours starts in Sydney, that guide covers the embarkation end, and our Melbourne port page covers the mainland call across Bass Strait. January 2027 alone shows eight calls, from Holland America, Norwegian, Carnival, Regent and Princess — one month, not a season total. October to April is the best time to cruise the state, and Coral Expeditions’ small Coral Discoverer is based here from late December to March. See the region on our Australia & New Zealand cruises hub, or open Hobart on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Planning your Hobart day

Tours, independent options and the ones to leave alone have their own guide. This page stays with the wharf — berths, buses, paperwork.

If you’re booking a tour yourself, our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the safer buy.

Practical notes

Current as of October 23, 2026 Review periodically

You need an ETA before the ship sails, not at the gangway.

US travelers must hold a visa or an approved Electronic Travel Authority before arriving in Australia. The ETA covers tourism stays under 90 days.

You apply through the Home Affairs AustralianETA app, which scans your passport chip and takes a live photo. A service fee applies — the app shows it before you pay.

Arriving from a foreign port? The terminal has processing space for Border Force, immigration and quarantine.

Prices are in Australian dollars, and cards go a long way.

Most Salamanca stallholders take credit cards, but some are cash only, and there’s a mobile ATM near the market information booth.

Taxis wait at the terminal. Agree the fare first.

The rank is immediately outside the terminal forecourt. There’s no set fare from the wharf, so settle the likely cost before a long ride.

On cruise days, Franklin Wharf between Hunter Street and the Constitution Dock bridge closes to through traffic — expect drivers to collect you on Hunter Street, not at the water’s edge.

Buses are free for now.

Public transport in Tasmania is free until June 2027. Metro’s 448 (weekdays) and 449 (weekends) run from Franklin Square to Fern Tree, at the foot of the mountain road.

The US advisory is Level 1.

Australia sits at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in the advisory issued August 18, 2026.

The mountain has its own weather.

Snow and ice can restrict the summit road at any time of year, mostly April to September. The whole park also closes on Extreme or Catastrophic fire-danger days.

Hobart FAQ

Can I walk from the cruise ship into Hobart?

Yes. The port is within about 800 meters of the CBD, and the cruise terminal is roughly a 400-meter walk from the main berth.

Your actual walk depends on which berth you get — check it on the day.

Do cruise ships tender in Hobart?

Not normally. Ships dock at Macquarie Wharf No. 2/3, with No. 4/5 for a second ship.

Port Arthur is different — ships calling there anchor and tender.

Is there a cruise shuttle into town?

No, and with the CBD this close you’re unlikely to need it. There’s a taxi rank outside the terminal.

Is MONA open every day?

No. It opens Monday and Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, through June 30, 2027.

The ferry from Brooke Street Pier takes about 30 minutes each way.

When is Salamanca Market on?

Every Saturday from 8.30am to 3pm. It skips Saturdays that fall on Christmas or Anzac Day.

How far is Port Arthur from the cruise port?

About 90 minutes by road each way. The site suggests allowing at least half a day on site.

Adult entry is AUD 55, including a 20-minute harbor cruise.

Do I need a visa for Hobart?

US citizens need a visa or an approved ETA for Australia before arrival. You apply for the ETA through the AustralianETA app from Home Affairs.

Is Hobart safe for cruise passengers?

Yes — the State Department rates Australia Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, as of August 18, 2026.

On the mountain, the bigger risk is weather — check the summit road status before you go up.
