The call
Monet in one half, a château in the other
Vernon is a split day. Viking and Uniworld pair it with La Roche-Guyon on the same date — Viking on day 3, Uniworld on day 2 — so one half goes to the hilltop château and the other to Monet.
Uniworld runs four excursions at once, and you choose one: the Château de La Roche-Guyon, a hike on the Crests Trail, Monet's Gardens by coach, or a ride of about three miles to Giverny by bike. Viking sells its own 3.5-hour 'Monet's Garden by Bicycle'.
Avalon offers Giverny or Bizy Castle. Tauck books an early-opening visit to the garden, and AmaWaterways lists Vernon's countryside and bike trails without naming Giverny.
Ships tie up at one of two town quays, Penthièvre or Caméré, with coach bays set aside for the Giverny run. No line says which quay, and none shows an overnight here.
From the ship: Vernon's old town, the mill and the collegiate church are an easy walk from the quay; Giverny isn't, so take the coach, a bike or the €5 shuttle.

SourceChâteau de La Roche-Guyon

Vernon's old mill, suspended over the Seine. A photograph between the quay and the old town.
SourceTour des Archives and Château de Bizy
The tower in the Jardin des Arts is all that's left of Philippe Auguste's castle. Bizy, higher up, was built in the image of Versailles.

Other ways to spend Vernon
Château Gaillard at Les Andelys
Richard the Lionheart's castle. Uniworld swaps it in for Giverny on March, late-October and November departures, when the garden is closed.
SourceYour own bike to Giverny
Bikes can be rented at the exit of Vernon station, and a cycle route runs to the village. Only on a free half day — the line's coach is quicker.

Things to do in Giverny & Vernon
Your line already handles the garden on the day of the call. These suit a Paris day before or after the cruise.
- Giverny day trip from ParisFor a sailing that misses the garden season — provided the garden is still open when you're in Paris.
- Giverny with time at the museumThe line tour centres on Monet's garden. A longer visit leaves room for the Impressionism museum in the village.
- Private Giverny guideFor a family that wants its own pace. Buy Fondation Monet entry separately; online booking is strongly advised.

When
The garden's 2027 dates aren't out yet. AmaWaterways' listed Paris & Normandy departures run from October 2026 to May 2027, so check that a spring date falls after the garden opens. From 1 May 2026, Fondation Monet e-tickets can't be changed or refunded. If Monet is the reason for the trip, choose an April-to-October sailing and see Giverny on your line's day-by-day before you pay.

Quick answers
Giverny & Vernon on a river cruise: questions
Does the ship stop at Giverny itself?
No — at Vernon, across the river. The lines take you over by coach, or by bike on Uniworld's and Viking's cycling options.
What happens on a November sailing?
The garden is shut by then. Uniworld sends late-season guests to Château Gaillard at Les Andelys instead; on other lines, ask what replaces Giverny.
Should I buy my own garden ticket?
Only if you're going independently. The Fondation Monet strongly recommends booking online and warns of long waits once the online quota is full, though it doesn't advertise timed slots. On a line excursion, entry is handled for you.
Can I do La Roche-Guyon as well?
Not on Uniworld, where the excursions run at the same time. Viking lists both places on one day, so check how its tours are timed.
Is this the same Normandy as an ocean cruise?
Not the same port. Ocean ships call on the coast instead; our Le Havre guide covers that call.
