Korčula in brief
Korčula town sits on the island’s east coast, facing the Pelješac peninsula across a strait that’s about 0.9 km wide at its narrowest.
The island is about 279 square kilometers with about 16,000 people, and no bridge joins it to the mainland. That shapes the whole day — anything off the island means a boat.
The landing is the easy part.
Port references say only smaller cruise ships tie up here, right in the center of town, while larger ships anchor offshore and tender guests to the same quay.
A Silversea excursion listing puts the old town gate about 50 meters from the tender station — you won’t need a shuttle.
The old town is compact, walled and laid out against the wind.
The tourist board describes a town ringed by stone walls, with streets in a fishbone pattern meant to let air through and keep the prevailing winds out. St Mark’s Cathedral, a Gothic and Renaissance mix, sits at the top.
Around it: the Bishop’s Palace with its Abbey Treasury, the Town Museum in the Gabrielis palace, and the house linked to Marco Polo’s family, with a tower you can climb for the rooftops. The tourist board calls the town his birthplace — a claim, not a settled fact.
The town is on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list, not the full list.
Past the walls, the island opens up — and the distances grow.
Lumbarda, the wine village with sandy beaches, is about a 15-minute drive. Vela Luka, at the far western end, is about an hour each way. Orebić and the Pelješac wineries sit across the water, a short boat ride away.
Which of those deserves your money is the job of our Korčula shore excursion guide. Read it before you book anything on board.
From the tender landing into Korčula
Small ships come alongside in the center of town, and bigger ones run tenders to it — check your daily program for which.
About 165 feet from the tender station to the old town gate, per a cruise-line tour listing.
The cathedral sits at the town’s high point, and the lanes up to it climb over worn stone steps.
The old town sits on a small peninsula you can cross in a few minutes, by our estimate — and still spend hours inside.
A wine village with sandy beaches, reached by road or summer water taxi rather than on foot.
The island’s western port, at the far end of the road — an excursion, not a stroll.
What's nearby, broadly
The first six on that list are inside or against the walls — all walkable, mostly within a few minutes of each other.
Badija, Lumbarda and Orebić are water-taxi or short-drive country. Blato and Vela Luka sit deep in the island, and the Pelješac wineries mean a boat and then a road — which is why ship tours here lean so heavily on boats.
Commonly reached from
Korčula sits between Split and Dubrovnik on Adriatic itineraries, and can share a sailing with Kotor. It’s a small-ship port: October 2026 calls on CruiseMapper include Hapag-Lloyd’s Europa, CroisiEurope, Seabourn Quest and Emerald Kaia, and the same schedule shows the summer of 2027 building to about 15 calls in August, with Oceania, Seabourn and Star Clippers all on it. Planning your Korčula day
This page covers the landing, the walk and the boats, while tours, and the ones to pass on, live in their own guide.
If you’re booking with a third party, our Shore Excursions Group vs. Viator comparison sets out which suits which port day — useful on a tender call, when the clock is tighter than it looks.

Euros — and cards are common.
Croatia uses the euro. The State Department’s older Croatia country page describes ATMs and credit cards as common — an older page, so carry a backup card.
Plan around the tender, not the walk.
On a tender call, the boats set your day. Read the last-tender time off your daily program, not from memory.
Boats beat cars for nearby places.
Water taxis have long run in summer from the town harbor to Badija, Lumbarda and Orebić, and ferries cross to Orebić daily. We didn’t find current euro fares from the operators, so ask at the quay before you board.
We also found no published taxi fare or rank for Korčula town, so agree any car price before you set off.
Shops keep long hours.
Shops in Croatian tourist towns generally open about 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and mostly seven days a week, so a Sunday call isn’t a shut-down town.
The US advisory is Level 1.
The US Embassy in Croatia’s site showed the State Department advisory at Level 1 on October 28, 2026. The department’s older country page calls violent crime rare and advises guarding your things on public transport.
Croatia is in the Schengen Area, so US passport holders visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport valid at least three months past departure. The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully running at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026; ETIAS isn’t in operation, and the EU hasn’t named a start date. It says it will announce one several months before launch, so check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly. Follow your ship’s instructions on how border checks are handled for the call.
Wear shoes with grip.
The lanes are old stone and the climb to the cathedral has steps — sandals with smooth soles are the wrong choice.

Korčula FAQ
Does Korčula tender?
Sometimes. Smaller ships dock in the center of town, and larger ones anchor and tender to the same quay — your daily program will say which applies to your ship.
How far is the old town from where I land?
Very close — about 50 meters, or roughly 165 feet, from the tender station to a historic gate.
Is there a shuttle in Korčula?
There’s no need for one, since you step off the tender or gangway and walk straight in.
Is Korčula old town hilly?
Mildly. The lanes rise to St Mark’s Cathedral at the top, with stone steps along the way.
It’s a small peninsula, so the climbs are short ones, not long hauls.
How do I get to Lumbarda?
By water taxi in summer, or by road — about 15 minutes by car. We found no current fare for either, so ask before you go.
Can I see the Moreška sword dance on a port day?
Only if your ship stays late. Shows in 2026 started at 9 p.m. at the summer cinema, per the tourist board, and an adult ticket was €20.
A day call such as Seabourn Quest’s October 2026 visit, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., leaves well before curtain. We found no 2027 schedule, so check visitkorcula.eu for your date.
What currency does Korčula use?
The euro. The State Department’s older country page describes cards and ATMs as common in Croatia.
Is Korčula safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department rates Croatia Level 1, its lowest level, per the US Embassy in Croatia’s site on October 28, 2026.
Usual care with bags in busy lanes and on the boats still applies.
