Napier in brief
Napier is a small city with one big idea — and the free shuttle drops you more or less on top of it.
The center was rebuilt in Art Deco style after the 1931 earthquake, and the Art Deco Trust still walks visitors through it from Memorial Square, with cruise-day departures at 10am and 2pm.
First, the port, because it sets the shape of the morning.
Napier Port is an active cargo and container terminal, and passengers aren’t allowed to walk out through it — so the gate is a bus stop, not a footpath.
A free shuttle does the job instead. Local greeters staff the shuttle, and the ride ends at the i-SITE Visitor Centre at 100 Marine Parade, next to the Soundshell.
Published distances to town run from about 1 km to roughly 1.5 miles. Cruise Critic and our own atlas card say about 2 km — since you’re riding, the queue matters more than the number.
Return shuttles run about every 15 to 20 minutes, per Cruise Critic, and the lines build as all-aboard gets close — aim for an early loop back, not the last one.
The season runs about seven months, and it gets crowded.
Napier Port takes cruise ships from October to April, with room for up to three alongside at once, and January 2027 alone shows 10 calls on 9 days — two of them on January 21.
Holland America, Azamara, Celebrity, Oceania, Carnival and Regent all appear on that one month’s schedule — a snapshot of the season, not a full list of who calls.
Hawke’s Bay is the second half of the story, and it starts where the shuttle route ends.
Wine country, Te Mata Peak and the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers all sit beyond the city, and each of them needs wheels — a tour, a bike or a car.
Our Napier shore excursion guide sorts out which of those earns a tour fare. Read it before you choose between the streets and the vineyards.
From the berth to Marine Parade
A working cargo and container port with room for up to three cruise ships at once — and ships as long as 348 m have called.
Pedestrians aren’t allowed out through the terminal area, so take the shuttle even when town looks close enough to walk.
About 1.2 miles, per Cruise Critic and our atlas card, though other guides put it nearer 1 km — you ride it either way.
Beside the Soundshell on the seafront. The i-SITE opens 9am to 5pm daily, and metered taxis can be booked there.
Shops, banks, cafes and the Deco streets are within about a 10-minute walk of the drop-off.
It sits further along Marine Parade at No. 546. Its listing puts it about a 15-minute walk from central Napier; from the shuttle stop, expect something similar — our estimate.
What's nearby, broadly
The first four are on foot from the shuttle stop. MTG is an easy stroll across the road from the i-SITE, and the aquarium is a walk of roughly 15 minutes along the parade.
Bluff Hill has a walking trail from Coote Road, off Marine Parade; the i-SITE can tell you how best to get up. The Saturday farmers market is on Emerson Street.
Ahuriri, the wineries, Te Mata Peak and the gannets are out of town. Plan on a tour, a bike or a car for any of them.

Napier is a call on New Zealand itineraries, alongside other North Island ports — see our Tauranga and Wellington port pages for two of them. If your sailing starts or ends in Auckland, that guide covers the embarkation end. See the region on our Australia & New Zealand cruises hub, or open Napier on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Napier day
Tours, independent options and the ones we’d pass on have their own guide — this page keeps to the wharf, the shuttle and the paperwork.
Booking a third-party tour? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour is still the safer buy.

Get your NZeTA before you sail, not at the pier.
Immigration New Zealand says cruise passengers from visa-waiver countries need an NZeTA and should allow at least 72 hours for processing — and US passport holders are visa-waiver visitors.
Immigration New Zealand’s May 2026 fees guide lists the NZeTA at NZD 17 through the official app or NZD 23 on the website. Most visitors also pay the International Visitor Levy of NZD 100 at the same time — it isn’t refunded if you’re declined.
Skip it and the problem shows up at the start of the trip, not in Napier, because passengers without an approved NZeTA can be refused boarding.
Prices are in New Zealand dollars.
Cards are widely accepted, per Cruise Critic and Celebrity, and the i-SITE is a good first stop for maps and a taxi booking.
Taxis are metered. No port fare is published.
Book one through the i-SITE or find one near the shuttle area, and ask the driver for a rough figure before a longer run out to the wineries — agree it at the curb, not at the cellar door.
Plan around the shuttle queue as well as the ship’s clock.
A loop every 15 to 20 minutes sounds generous until three ships are in. Aim to be back at the i-SITE well ahead of all-aboard.
Book the Art Deco walk ahead.
The Art Deco Trust asks cruise passengers for at least 48 hours’ notice. Book from home.
Its terms cancel free up to 48 hours out, charge 30% after that, and charge the full price inside 24 hours.
Check the US advisory before you go.
The State Department’s national advisory for New Zealand is Level 1, exercise normal precautions (issued April 29, 2026; the U.S. Embassy in New Zealand still showed Level 1 when we checked on October 29, 2026).
