Destination Port Guide · Picton, Marlborough Sounds

Picton

Picton is a docking port with two wharves, and which one you get decides your first ten minutes. Big ships berth at Waimahara Wharf in Shakespeare Bay, a working log port — so you ride the shuttle into town, not walk. Smaller ships tie up at Waitohi Wharf, beside the town center. Either way, the town itself is small. The Sounds and the vineyards are the part that needs a boat or a van.

Picton in brief

Picton is a small harbor town near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, and a cruise call here is mostly about the water around it.

Two wharves, two very different arrivals.

Port Marlborough describes Waimahara Wharf, in Shakespeare Bay, as a berth used mostly for log exports and for large cruise ships, with room for ships up to 350 m long. Its 2026-27 schedule puts Anthem of the Seas, Royal Princess, Celebrity Edge and Noordam there.

Waitohi Wharf is the town-side berth — 240 m long, for ships up to about 245 m. On the same schedule, Azamara, Silversea, Seabourn and the smaller European ships use its western berth.

Expedition ships skip both. Heritage Adventurer and Coral Adventurer are listed at Ship Cove, an anchorage out in the Sound.

The season is short.

Port Marlborough lists 36 calls for 2026-27, from Grand Princess on November 10, 2026, to Anthem of the Seas on April 2, 2027. Princess has the most, with eight.

Departure times on that list mostly fall between about 2pm and 7pm, so check yours — a 2pm sailaway turns a full day into a morning.

The water is why you’re here.

Queen Charlotte Sound, Ship Cove, the Queen Charlotte Track and the wineries around Blenheim are the big draws. All of them need transport.

Our Picton shore excursion guide sorts out which of those earn a tour fare. Read it before you pick between a boat and a wine glass.

From the wharf to the foreshore

Large ships
Waimahara Wharf, Shakespeare Bay

A working log-export berth, per Port Marlborough. Wikivoyage says there’s no foot access, so you’ll ride a shuttle out.

Shuttle
Into Picton and the i-SITE

Destination Marlborough calls it a short transfer to town. Cruise Critic puts the ride at under five minutes.

Smaller ships
Waitohi Wharf, by the town

Ships up to about 245 m berth here. Wikivoyage puts it about half a mile (800 m) from the town center.

Town center
The Foreshore and London Quay

The i-SITE sits on the Foreshore, with the cafes, the Town Wharf and the boat operators’ offices close by.

Dunbar Wharf
The Edwin Fox

Tourism New Zealand lists the Edwin Fox visitor center on Dunbar Wharf. The ship itself is closed to visitors for now, and we found no published walking time.

Expedition ships
Ship Cove anchorage

Small expedition ships are listed at anchor out at Ship Cove, well up the Sound — your line will run the boats.

Picton Foreshore Town Wharf cruise-day market Edwin Fox, Dunbar Wharf Picton Museum The Snout walking tracks Victoria Domain Waikawa Bay Kaipūpū Point Sanctuary Lochmara Bay Ship Cove and Motuara Island Queen Charlotte Track Blenheim and the Marlborough wineries Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre

The first five are a walk from the shuttle drop. Destination Marlborough lists a cruise-day market on the Town Wharf, and town walks from about 10 minutes to a couple of hours.

The Snout is the peninsula between Picton and Waikawa Bay. Wikivoyage says its tracks run from a few minutes to about 3.5 hours, starting past the bridge at the east end of the foreshore — pick up the free council map at the i-SITE first.

Kaipūpū Point, Lochmara, Ship Cove and the Queen Charlotte Track are all reached by boat. Destination Marlborough’s 2024-25 brochure puts Kaipūpū ten minutes out by boat.

Blenheim and the wine country sit inland, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road, depending on the source. Plan on a tour or a driver, not a stroll.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Get your NZeTA before you sail, not at the terminal.

Immigration New Zealand’s cruise-passenger sheet (2019) says passengers from visa-waiver countries must hold an NZeTA before they travel, and that a request can take up to 72 hours. Our Atlas card counts US citizens among them, but the sheet is from 2019, so confirm the rule at immigration.govt.nz before you book.

Tourism New Zealand says cruise passengers also pay the International Visitor Levy — NZD 100 a person since October 1, 2024, added at the NZeTA checkout.

The 2019 sheet says passengers without one won’t be allowed to board. Sort it weeks ahead.

Read the departure time as well as the arrival.

Port Marlborough’s arrival times are to the pilot station, not the wharf. It says to add about 3 hours for Waimahara and 2.5 hours for Waitohi West — so a 5am listing means you’re alongside around 7:30 to 8am, not at dawn.

The shuttle fare isn’t published by the port or the tourism board.

Cruise Critic describes the Waimahara shuttle as complimentary. We couldn’t confirm that from Port Marlborough or Destination Marlborough, so ask at the ship’s tour desk.

Cruise Critic also says taxis are metered and that Uber works here. No taxi fare is published by an official source we read.

Bring New Zealand dollars or a card.

Cruise Critic lists ATMs at Picton Mall and Mariners Mall, on High Street. Destination Marlborough says prices include 15% GST and tipping isn’t expected.

Pack a layer, even in summer.

Destination Marlborough gives a summer average high of about 75°F (24°C), and about 68°F (20°C) in spring — and warns the weather changes fast. Bring a jacket.

Check the US advisory before you go.

The US Embassy in New Zealand shows Level 1, Exercise Normal Caution. Read the full advisory on travel.state.gov the week you fly.

We won’t print a shuttle or taxi fare, because no official source we read publishes one.

Large ships berth at Waimahara Wharf in Shakespeare Bay. Smaller ships, up to about 245 m, use Waitohi Wharf next to the town. Port Marlborough’s schedule names the berth for each call.

Not the big ones — Port Marlborough’s 2026-27 schedule lists them alongside a wharf. Small expedition ships are listed at the Ship Cove anchorage, out in the Sound, and use boats from there.

Can I walk from Waimahara Wharf into Picton?

Plan on the shuttle. Waimahara is a working log port, and Wikivoyage says there’s no foot access, with transfers running to the i-SITE.

Can I walk from Waitohi Wharf?

Yes, for most people. Wikivoyage puts it about half a mile (800 m) from the town center, and Cruise & Ferry describes it as next to the center.

Cruise Critic says so, but neither Port Marlborough nor Destination Marlborough publishes a fare. Confirm with your ship.

Yes, if you’re a US citizen. Immigration New Zealand says visa-waiver cruise passengers must hold one before they travel, and Tourism New Zealand says cruise passengers pay the NZD 100 visitor levy too.

Allow up to 72 hours for it to come through.
