The short answer

Fly into Auckland Airport (AKL). It’s about 18 km from Queens Wharf in a straight line by our map, and a taxi is the easy ride: fixed CBD fares from NZ$62 to NZ$105 by company, airport charges included, per the airport.

The rank is outside door 11, in lanes 2 and 3 of the transport pick-up zone. Only licensed companies can pick up there.

SkyDrive is the cheaper middle way. It runs every 30 minutes from 05:00 to 22:30 to Hobson Street by SkyCity, and doesn’t charge extra for luggage, per its own site.

Holland America puts the drive at about 40 minutes and Royal Caribbean at about 45. Allow for the longer.

Take a taxi if

  • You land with cruise luggage
  • There are two or more of you
  • You want a fixed fare at the rank

Take SkyDrive or the train if

  • You travel light
  • Your hotel is near Hobson Street
  • You land between 05:00 and 22:30 and don’t mind a change at Puhinui

The Ride

What the ride costs, roughly

The taxi rows are Auckland Airport’s fixed CBD fares. The shuttle row is Super Shuttle’s starting fare, which the airport bases on two people travelling together.

Travelers
Taxi, Cheap Cabs fixed CBD fare, NZ$62 (Auckland Airport)—
Taxi, Corporate Cabs fixed CBD fare, NZ$105 (Auckland Airport)—
Super Shuttle, from NZ$20 a person for two (Auckland Airport)—

One way, in New Zealand dollars. Alert Taxis is NZ$75 and Auckland Co-op NZ$90 on the same list. SkyDrive and AirportLink don’t print a single airport-to-city fare on the pages we read, so they aren’t in the calculator.

AirportLink runs every 10 minutes from about 04:30 to 00:40 to Puhinui, where you change to a train for the city-centre stations, per Auckland Transport. Pay by card or AT HOP; there’s no cash on AT buses.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

No line we read publishes an Auckland check-in close, so put in the times from your documents. The first row is our bare-minimum estimate; the second is our margin, not a rule.

  • Off the plane, through the border and into a taxiOur allowance: about 45 minutes for the drive, which the lines put at 40 to 45, plus an hour for passport control, bags and biosecurity — our estimate, not a published figure.—
  • A ride in with time to spareOur rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—

The US overnights land about 06:00, so a same-day connection looks easy on paper. But there’s roughly one flight a day from each city we checked, and a missed one leaves you a day behind a ship already at sea. Come the day before.

A night in Auckland first

Fly in the day before. Walk to the ship in the morning.

We ranked twelve hotels for an Auckland sailing; ten are downtown, and the closest is about 100 m from Queens Wharf. Tell us the flight and the ship, and Seabound Journeys will pick the night that fits.

Coming Home

The morning you’re back

No line we read publishes an Auckland disembarkation time. Holland America puts the airport about 40 minutes away, at roughly NZ$90 by taxi. Enter your flight and the time you expect to be ashore; the planner sets out the ride and the wait.

Partner links may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

Entry and Bags

Entry, the flight home and bags

Flying in to board: US citizens need an NZeTA or a visa, and a passport valid three months past the date you leave, with a blank page, per the State Department. The NZeTA is NZ$17 on the app or NZ$23 online, plus the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, per Immigration New Zealand’s fee table.

Apply early. New Zealand’s consulate in Honolulu says processing can take up to 72 hours, and the NZeTA lasts two years.

Immigration New Zealand’s cruise sheet says an NZeTA also lets you fly in and out before or after your cruise. That sheet dates from 2019, so check its current pages too.

Biosecurity: fill in the New Zealand Traveller Declaration online or in the app before your flight, per Customs, and declare all food, plants and animal products. A false declaration is a NZ$400 fine, per MPI.

Ending a cruise here: if you boarded in Sydney, you enter New Zealand at the wharf, so you’ll need the NZeTA before you sail. Then it’s a taxi to AKL; the Luggage Hotel on Princes Wharf holds bags on weekdays, and the ferry-terminal eLockers any day. For the wharves and the lines, see our Auckland cruise guide.
