Kiel’s cruise flights land in Hamburg, about an hour south by road and about 1 hour 35 minutes by bus. Our routing puts Hamburg Airport about 58.7 road miles (94.5 km) from Ostseekai and 61.9 from Ostuferhafen, roughly 66 and 72 minutes with no traffic. The Kielius bus runs straight from the airport to Kiel for €26 online, so most people never need a car.
Land 5 hours before sailing if you ride the Kielius or the train; 6 if you want MSC’s shuttle, which stops 4 hours before departure. Those are our margins, not a line’s. Put in your times to check.
Fly into Hamburg. Our routing puts Hamburg Airport about 58.7 miles (94.5 km) from Ostseekai, roughly 66 minutes with no traffic. The Kielius bus takes about 1 hour 35 minutes to Kiel ZOB, beside Kiel Hbf.
The bus costs €26 (about US$30) online or €27 (about US$30) on board, per Kielius’s fares from March 1, 2026. The train is the other way in: the S1 to Hamburg Hbf, then a train to Kiel, the fastest 1 hour 7 minutes, per Deutsche Bahn.
Then check which terminal you need. Ostseekai, for TUI and AIDA, is a walk from Kiel Hbf. Ostuferhafen, for MSC and Costa, is across the fjord — a bus, MSC’s paid shuttle or a taxi.

American lines call here, not start here. Norwegian’s Kiel page says the ship “will DOCK at this port”. The port’s 2026 list shows Norwegian Sun on several summer dates — and Holland America, Princess, Regent, Oceania, Cunard and Carnival once or twice each. That list doesn’t mark which visits are turnarounds, so trust your own booking over it.
The Norwegenkai and Schwedenkai by the station are ferry berths for Color Line and Stena — not where a cruise ship boards. Several hotels measure to them. Our seventeen Kiel hotels are measured to both cruise terminals instead.
The road and the Kielius bus run north from Hamburg Airport past Neumünster to Kiel. Ostseekai sits on the west shore of the fjord by the Altstadt, and Ostuferhafen faces it from the east bank, about 5.0 road miles from Kiel Hbf by our routing.
No line page we read names Lübeck or Copenhagen as a way into a Kiel cruise. “Airport Kiel”, at Holtenau, turns up in Port Parking’s pages as the AIDA shuttle car park. It’s a place to leave the car, not an airport any line told us to fly into.

One way, in euros, as published on October 3, 2026. Kielius’s children’s single is €15 (about US$17) online and its adult return €48 (about US$55). MSC prints the Kiel Hbf shuttle at €15 a person or €25 (about US$30) return on its international and US pages; plan on €15. Deutsche Bahn showed sample Hamburg–Kiel fares from €17.98 (about US$20) (saver) to €34 (about US$40) (flexible) for the fast train, examples that move with the day and the train.
Seven rental desks share the arrivals level of Terminal 2 — Avis/Budget, Enterprise/Alamo, Europcar, Green Motion, Hertz/Dollar/Thrifty, SIXT and Wheego, per the airport.
No line we read publishes a landing cut-off for Kiel — the rows here are our own margins, apart from MSC’s shuttle, which stops 4 hours before departure. Put in your scheduled landing and the sailing time from your documents.
Your boarding documents set the check-in time; the port doesn’t publish one. We found no luggage storage at either terminal.

AIDA's return shuttle to Kiel Hbf typically runs until 11:00, and Port Parking's airport-lot shuttle runs from 30 minutes after docking until 11 am. The Kielius is the simple one. It leaves from the lower level of the Airport Plaza, stops at Neumünster and ends at Kiel ZOB, bay C, on Auguste-Viktoria-Straße — about 200 m from Kiel Hbf, per MSC. The summer timetable (March to October) runs about 13 trips a day, the first from the airport at 05:50 and the last at 23:45. From November a winter timetable applies; check kielius-onlinebuchung.de for your date. Book online for €26, or €16 (about US$18) if a Sparpreis seat is left. Kielius’s fare page lists card payment on board, but a notice about four newer buses said otherwise, so carry a few euros.
The train route has a change but more departures. The S1 runs from the airport to Hamburg Hbf every 10 minutes. Deutsche Bahn counts about 48 trains a day on to Kiel — the fastest takes 1 hour 7 minutes. A Deutschlandticket covers the regional trains, not the ICE.
From Kiel Hbf, Ostseekai is about 15 minutes on foot, per AIDA, or about 1.3 road miles by our routing. Ostuferhafen is about 5.0 road miles (8.0 km) away. Take bus 11 toward Dietrichsdorf or the 60S to Grenzstraße, 200 m from the terminal — €3.00 (about US$3) a ticket from April 1, 2026. Or take MSC’s shuttle from the station.
Kiel adds an overnight tax of 5% of the net room price from October 1, 2026, per the city’s information sheet; a stay booked January 1 to September 30, 2026 and ending by June 30, 2027 is exempt. One night near the ship takes the bus timetable off sail morning. After a long-haul flight you’ll want Ostseekai a walk away, not the Kielius and a taxi with the clock running.
None of our seventeen runs an airport shuttle. Landing late? The Radisson Blu sits at Hamburg Airport, joined to the terminals by a footbridge per Radisson’s page, about 57.5 road miles from Ostseekai by our routing. The IntercityHotel at Hamburg Hbf is downstairs from the Kiel trains.

Hamburg Airport (HAM). Our routing puts it about 58.7 miles (94.5 km) from Ostseekai and 61.9 miles (99.6 km) from Ostuferhafen, roughly 66 and 72 minutes with no traffic. MSC calls it about 84 km south of Kiel on one page and about 95 km from the port on another; AIDA says about 90 km.
Two ways. The Kielius bus leaves from the Airport Plaza's lower level and reaches Kiel ZOB in about 1 hour 35 minutes. It's €26 online (a limited number of Sparpreis seats start at €16) or €27 on the bus, per Kielius's fares from March 1, 2026. Online tickets close 1 hour before departure. Or take the S1 to Hamburg Hbf (25 minutes, every 10 minutes, per the airport) and a train to Kiel Hbf; the fastest takes 1 hour 7 minutes, per Deutsche Bahn.
No. Kielius says the Deutschlandticket isn't valid on its bus. It does cover regional trains (RE and RB) and the S-Bahn, not ICE, IC or EC trains, per Deutsche Bahn. It's also a subscription at €63 (about US$70) a month, not a single ticket.
We couldn't find a published fare. Hamburg Airport says you can agree a fixed price with its taxi partners for trips outside Hamburg, so ask before you get in. AIDA puts the ride at about 1 to 1.5 hours.
From Kiel Hbf, yes, on embarkation day, to Ostuferhafen until 4 hours before departure, booked on site with MSC's hostesses. It costs €15 a person or €25 return on MSC's international, US and Irish pages; its Finnish page still says €10 (about US$11). Plan on €15. Book flights through MSC and the airport transfer is included; otherwise MSC arranges Hamburg transfers through its call centre, with no price published.
Yes. MSC says to take bus 11 toward Dietrichsdorf, or the 60S, from Kiel Hbf to the Grenzstraße stop, 200 m from the terminal. The ride can take up to 30 minutes, MSC adds. A Kiel single costs €3.00 from April 1, 2026, per NAH.SH.
To Ostseekai, yes — AIDA puts it about 15 minutes on foot from the station. Ostuferhafen is on the other side of the fjord, about 5.0 road miles (8.0 km) from Kiel Hbf by our routing, so take the bus, MSC's shuttle or a taxi.
