Port Klang in brief
Port Klang is the door to Kuala Lumpur, and it’s a long hallway.
Ships tie up at a five-story cruise terminal on Pulau Indah, an island of container berths. Tourism Selangor reports the Sultan of Selangor launched it in September 2022 as the Port Klang Cruise Terminal, run by a joint venture of Klang Port Management and Westports.
It has gone by other names. Penang Travel Tips traces it from the Star Cruises Terminal, built by the Genting Group, to the Boustead Cruise Centre after a 2014 sale — and some guides still use the Boustead name.
Same island, and by our reading the same five-story building — no source says so outright. Don’t let the name change throw you.
What’s in Port adds one wrinkle: if a ferry or another ship holds the cruise berth, you may be sent to the cargo terminal farther out.
The city is the destination.
CruiseMapper puts Port Klang about 38 km from central Kuala Lumpur, and Tourism Selangor calls it about an hour’s drive. What’s in Port’s version is blunter — an hour if you’re lucky, because traffic can be horrendous.
So the port day is really a Kuala Lumpur day with two long drives attached — build it that way.
Which tours earn the drive is the job of our Port Klang shore excursion guide. Read it before you pick.
From the gangway to the road
Link bridges and covered walkways run from the wharf into the terminal building, per Tourism Selangor.
What’s in Port puts the coaches roughly 200 m (about 650 ft) from the gangway. That’s the easy walk of the day.
Taxis wait at the terminal, but What’s in Port warns they’re limited. Fixed rates are posted inside, so read them before you agree to anything.
A bus and taxi area sits about 1 km (0.6 mile) inland. What’s in Port calls it walkable but hot and noisy. Ask your ship whether you may walk through the port area at all.
The KTM Komuter line doesn’t reach the island. What’s in Port puts the station about 13 km (8 miles) away, so a taxi comes first.
Pulau Indah is container yards and highways. Plan the day around wheels, not walking shoes.
What's nearby, broadly
Almost everything people come for sits in or near Kuala Lumpur: the Petronas Towers and KLCC Park, Merdeka Square, the National Mosque and the Batu Caves.
Closer to the ship, the terminal has a Mah Meri exhibition area on the culture of the Mah Meri people, and What’s in Port says ships often run a shuttle to the AEON Bukit Tinggi mall, about 20 minutes away. Malacca shows up on tour menus too, as a full day, not a side trip.
Commonly reached from
Port Klang sits on the Strait of Malacca, on Malaysia’s west coast. Genting Dream, a Dream Cruises ship now run under StarDream Cruises, sails 2- to 5-night trips from here to Penang, Phuket, Pulau Redang, Koh Samui, Bangkok and Bali. If your voyage starts or ends down the coast, our Singapore guide covers that end. CruiseMapper’s October 2026 list shows Genting Dream, Viking Venus and Royal Princess. See the wider region on our Asia cruises hub, or open the port on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Port Klang day
The excursion guide weighs the tours. This page is about the terminal, the roads, the cash and the paperwork.
Planning to book a tour or a driver yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers how each handles a port day this far from the sights — which matters more here than at most ports.

File the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card.
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is not a visa. It is generally required, subject to official exemptions, and you submit it online within the three days before you arrive. File through the Immigration Department’s portal at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main and read its exemption list before you do.
We found no blanket exemption for cruise passengers. Confirm with your cruise line how the card is handled for the call — some lines arrange it, others expect you to file your own.
Passport, not visa.
For ordinary U.S. passport holders, Malaysia generally requires no visa for tourism or business visits of 90 days or less, and your passport needs at least six months’ validity beyond arrival. Source: the State Department’s Malaysia page at travel.state.gov, checked October 29, 2026. Check it again before you sail.
Money: the ringgit.
Malaysia uses the ringgit (MYR, written RM). What’s in Port says ATMs are easy to find in the cities — and Tourism Selangor lists ATMs and foreign-exchange counters inside the terminal.
Tipping isn’t customary, per What’s in Port.
Taxis: few, and fixed.
Fixed taxi rates are posted in the terminal. What’s in Port prints a taxi sightseeing day in Kuala Lumpur at over $85 and the ride to the train station at around $20.
Those are guide figures, not a tariff — read the posted board on the day.
The train is possible, not quick.
The KTM Komuter Port Klang Line ends at Pelabuhan Klang and runs through Klang and Shah Alam to KL Sentral. Timetable site train36 puts that ride at about 1 hour 25 minutes for RM6.40; What’s in Port says about 1 hour 10 minutes to Kuala Lumpur.
Add the 13 km taxi to the station each way and the train saves money, not time — our reading of the figures. Check KTMB’s own timetable before you count on it.
Safety: normal precautions.
The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur’s site shows Malaysia at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, and adds that some areas carry increased risk. The State Department’s own page didn’t load for us on October 28, 2026 — read it to see which areas, and check they’re off your route.
Season.
Dream Cruises opened its 2026 Port Klang season in April, and Tourism Selangor says the terminal has handled over 5 million passengers since 1995. We didn’t find an official weather or cruise-season note to quote, so pack for heat and a downpour either way.

No official taxi tariff, shuttle timetable or KTMB fare was readable at the source, and we won’t guess at them.

Port Klang FAQ
Can I walk from the cruise ship to Kuala Lumpur?
No. The terminal is on Pulau Indah, inside a working port, and Kuala Lumpur is about 38 km away.
Plan on a tour, a booked driver or a taxi from the terminal stand.
How long does it take to get from Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur?
About an hour by road, according to Tourism Selangor — longer in heavy traffic, which What’s in Port warns can be horrendous.
Is the Boustead Cruise Centre the same as the Port Klang Cruise Terminal?
It appears to be. The Pulau Indah terminal began as the Star Cruises Terminal, became the Boustead Cruise Centre in 2014 and was relaunched as the Port Klang Cruise Terminal in 2022.
If a berth is busy, a ship may use the cargo terminal instead, so check your daily schedule.
Does Port Klang tender?
Not as far as we found. Ships dock, though What’s in Port notes a ship may be moved to the cargo terminal if the cruise berth is taken.
Do US citizens need a visa for Malaysia?
Ordinary U.S. passport holders generally need no visa for tourism or business visits of 90 days or less, per travel.state.gov (checked October 29, 2026). Your passport needs six months’ validity beyond arrival, and the online Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is generally required — it isn’t a visa.
When should I submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
Within the three days before you arrive, through the Immigration Department’s MDAC portal. Exemptions exist and we found no blanket one for cruise passengers, so ask your line how it’s handled for the call.
Can I take the train from Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur?
Yes, with effort — you need a taxi of about 13 km to the KTM station, then about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 25 minutes to Kuala Lumpur, depending on the source.
What currency do I need in Port Klang?
The Malaysian ringgit. The terminal has ATMs and exchange counters — take some cash off the ship, not just a card.
