Getting There · Osaka/Kobe
Fly into Kansai, then pick your city. KATE’s bus reaches Tempozan in about an hour for ¥1,800, but the last one leaves at 17:10; Kobe is ¥2,200 by bus or ¥1,880 by ferry.
Put in your landing and the ship’s departure. The defaults are United’s 14:50 arrival from San Francisco and a 19:00 sailing; use your own documents.
Fly into Kansai International (KIX). It’s the one with US nonstops. From Terminal 1, KATE’s limousine bus runs to Tempozan in about an hour for ¥1,800, and to Kobe Sannomiya in about 65 minutes for ¥2,200.
For Kobe there’s a faster way across the water. The Bay Shuttle ferry runs Kansai to Kobe Airport in about 30 minutes for ¥1,880, and the Port Liner takes you on to Sannomiya — or straight to Kobe Port Terminal’s own station. Its discount for foreign visitors ended June 30, 2026.
Watch the clock, not the fare. The Tempozan bus runs only 8:20 to 17:10 from Terminal 1. Land after that and you’re in a taxi — MK’s flat rate to Osaka Umeda starts at ¥16,400 before tolls, per the airport — or in the airport hotel.

We couldn’t find a Princess, Celebrity, Holland America or Royal Caribbean cruise that starts or ends here in 2026–27. On the listings we read, their Japan cruises start in Tokyo or Yokohama and call here; Princess’s “cruisetours from Kobe” begin with land days in Kobe, then board in Yokohama. Viking Orion, Westerdam, Celebrity Millennium and Norwegian Jade are on Kobe’s autumn 2026 arrivals list as calls, per the City of Kobe. Ships on that list stop in for the day.

One way, in yen. Children ride KATE’s buses for half fare and the ferry for ¥940. The airport’s metered estimates, tolls included, are ¥23,320 to central Osaka and ¥30,610 to Sannomiya. We found no flat rate published to Tempozan itself.
JR West’s HARUKA one-way ticket for foreign visitors is ¥1,800 to Osaka or Shin-Osaka and ¥2,000 to Kobe, but you’ll still need the metro or a taxi to the ship. With cruise bags, the bus or the ferry is simpler.
We couldn’t find a published boarding cut-off for these sailings, so neither row is a line’s rule. The first is the bus ride alone; the second is our own margin. Use your line’s times.
United’s 14:50 arrival from San Francisco leaves about four hours before a 19:00 sailing, and it makes the last Tempozan bus. Japan Airlines’ 18:45 arrival from Los Angeles doesn’t make either. From March 27, 2027, United adds a daily Los Angeles flight, per press reports. Book the night before.
We ranked fourteen hotels: six in Kobe, five around Tempozan and Universal City, two in central Osaka and one in Terminal 1. Tell us the flight and the ship, and Seabound Journeys will pick the night that fits.
None of the lines we read publishes a disembarkation window for these sailings. Japan Airlines’ flight to Los Angeles leaves Kansai at 17:45, per schedule data. Enter your flight and when you expect to be off; the planner sets out the ride and the wait.

Entry. For US citizens the State Department asks for a passport valid for the whole stay, one blank page per entry stamp and proof of an onward ticket, and needs no visa for stays under 90 days. Japan’s Foreign Ministry lists the United States on its visa-exemption list at 90 days. Everyone is fingerprinted and photographed on arrival. The State Department rates Japan Level 1, issued May 15, 2025.
Two things catch Americans. Adderall and some other routine US prescriptions are illegal in Japan, and US prescriptions aren’t honoured there, per the State Department. And you must declare ¥1,000,000 or more in cash, in or out.
Visit Japan Web. Kansai asks you to register before you fly and scan the QR code with your passport at the kiosks in its immigration halls. That’s for your flight in. On a cruise that ends in Japan from abroad, follow your line’s instructions; our Tokyo guide notes that lines normally hand out paper forms on board.
JESTA. Not yet. Japan’s Diet passed the law in May 2026; the start date is set by ordinance and must come by March 31, 2029, and the government is aiming for fiscal 2028, per press reports. It will apply to visa-free visitors, cruise passengers included, with a fee still to be set. Check again before you fly.

One night ashore is the plan, not a luxury. Most US flights land in the afternoon or evening, and the evening one misses the last Osaka bus.
Four of our fourteen are a short walk from a gangway: three by Naka Pier in Kobe and Hotel Seagull at Tempozan. Kintetsu Universal City and Liber sit on KATE’s airport bus route, and the Nikko is attached to Kansai’s Terminal 1.

What each of our fourteen says about getting from Kansai to its door. Only the Nikko is connected; none runs its own airport shuttle, and IHG says the Crowne Plaza has none.
Kansai International (KIX). It has the US nonstops: United from San Francisco and Japan Airlines from Los Angeles, plus Honolulu flights. We found no US nonstops to Itami or Kobe Airport.
¥1,800 one way for an adult, about an hour, per KATE. It runs from Terminal 1 between 8:20 and 17:10.

Visit Japan Web speeds up Kansai’s immigration and customs kiosks; register before you fly. JESTA isn’t in force: it must start by March 31, 2029, per press reports.
Both have coin lockers, ¥200 to ¥600 a day, ¥100 coins only, per the City of Kobe. We found none published at Tempozan.
