Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel
The hotel on top of the Naka Pier cruise terminal, with a pool, a gym, a sauna and four places to eat or drink.
Pre-Cruise Hotels · Osaka/Kobe
Fourteen hotels for the night before an Osaka or Kobe cruise, each measured to its own city’s terminal. Four are a short walk from a gangway — but pick the city first, because Tempozan and Naka Pier are about 14 miles apart.
Three taps and we’ll show your three picks.
Change any answer and the picks change with it. They’re built from the same published facts as the ranking below. No hotel pays for a place here. Booking.com links earn us a commission, and they don’t change the order.
Matching weighs your answers against each hotel’s published shuttle, parking, breakfast, pool, kitchen and pet policies.
Five answers, and the page builds the whole thing: the hotel, the ride in, the ride to the ship, what happens to the car, what time to leave, and how you get home. Every figure is one a hotel, the City of Osaka or Kobe, KATE, the airport, a booking platform (marked to confirm) or a line publishes, or a straight-line distance between our own map pins. Where nobody publishes a number, you’ll see that instead of a guess.
There’s no cruise parking to price here, so the plan assumes you fly in.
Who’s coming and the mood come from Your Match; the plan uses the same answers.
Partner links may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
The Meriken Park Oriental wins: the Naka Pier terminal is in its building, per the City of Kobe. Hotel Okura Kobe ties it on points and loses on distance. Kobe Portopia is third, on the Port Liner with a pool and sauna. The best Osaka-side pick is Hotel Seagull, sixth, a two-minute walk from Tempozan.
Narrow the fourteen by what your night needs. Save the ones you like. Tick up to three to compare side by side — the order is ours, the shortlist is yours.
Why fourteen? Six in Kobe, five around Tempozan and Universal City, two in central Osaka and one at the airport — the ones with enough published to score. Each page names its own sources: the hotel, its brand, or the Osaka tourism bureau’s listing, which supports just what it states. The few booking-platform details left are printed as “confirm with the hotel” and never score.
Add your sail date and the links open on the night before.

Every distance runs to the hotel’s own city’s terminal — Tempozan in Osaka, Naka Pier in Kobe — and every one is a straight line between our map pins, not a route. The airport hotel is shown to Tempozan.
Walking times assume an easy pace on streets about a third longer than the straight line. The Kobe Port Terminal distances are on each Kobe hotel’s page.
Five things make an Osaka or Kobe night before easy or hard, and here distance does most of the work. Points come only from a hotel’s own site, its brand or a tourism board.
Silence scores zero, not a guess. Points come only from a hotel’s own site, its brand or a tourism board, and only for what it states outright. Booking-platform listings never score.
By band, from the hotel’s own city’s terminal: a walk, within about 0.4 miles (600 m), 30; a short ride, to about 2 miles (3 km), 25; across the city 15; at the airport 10.
A transfer the hotel runs or arranges, with a published price, 25. A ride only inside a package 20. The hotel’s own ride with no published fare 15. A walk the hotel itself prints at half a mile or less 15. Nobody scores. None of our fourteen runs or arranges a ride to the ship, and the Kobe hotels’ free shuttles go to Sannomiya, not the pier. The Oriental shares a building with the Naka Pier terminal, but that’s the City of Kobe’s fact, not a walk the hotel prints.
A published rate to leave the car at the hotel while you cruise 20; offered, but unpriced or not guaranteed, 14. Day rates in a public garage don’t count. Only the Nikko scores, 14: Business Class guests park free up to 20 days, then ¥840 a day, but spaces aren’t guaranteed. Overnight parking for your stay doesn’t count.
A breakfast the hotel says is included scores 10. Nobody scores. None of the pages we read says breakfast is in every rate.
Pool 3, food or a bar on site 3, a kitchen in the room 3, a sauna or spa 3, a gym 3. The Oriental, the Okura, Portopia, the Crowne Plaza and the Conrad score 12 of 15 for a pool, a sauna or spa, a gym and restaurants — pools and saunas cost extra at most of them. la suite, Liber and Keihan score 6, for food and a spa or hot spring. Seagull and Bande score 3 each for breakfast served in the building, per each hotel.
Ties are broken in order: any published parking for your cruise, any stated ride to the ship, free breakfast, then the shorter straight-line distance to our Naka Pier pin. The tool breaks ties by distance to its Naka Pier pin, whichever city a hotel is in. So the Oriental beats the Okura and Portopia beats the Crowne Plaza on real distance, but Liber ranks above Keihan Universal Tower, and Daiwa Roynet, Kintetsu Universal City and Bande Hotel fall in that order at 28, only because of where they sit against that pin. Keihan is in fact the closer of its pair to Tempozan.
What’s left out is deliberate. Room rates move by the day, so they aren’t scored, and review scores neither. Distances are straight lines between our own map pins, not routed walks or drives, and we say so wherever they appear.
None of our fourteen sells parking for a cruise, and we found no cruise parking at either city’s terminals.
At the terminals. Kobe Port Terminal’s car park is ¥160 an hour, ¥960 a day at most, per the City of Kobe; it can’t be reserved and doesn’t say it takes cars for a voyage. We found nothing published at Tempozan.
At the hotels. For your stay only: ¥1,000 a night at la suite and Portopia, ¥1,500 at Daiwa Roynet, ¥1,650 at Hotel Seagull, ¥1,800 at the Oriental, ¥3,000 at Liber and ¥3,000 or ¥3,500 per 24 hours at Kintetsu Universal City and Keihan, per each hotel; ¥1,500 a day in the Times garage at the Crowne Plaza, per IHG; ¥3,700 self-park at the Conrad, terms unconfirmed, per Hilton. Only the Nikko, at the airport, offers long stays, and only to Business Class guests.
We checked a few more and left them out:
| Hotel | Why it isn’t ranked |
|---|---|
| Grand Prince Hotel Osaka Bay | A stop on KATE’s Tempozan bus, per KATE. We couldn’t read their own sites yet. |
| Central Osaka, Sannomiya and splurge picks | Not yet researched. This ranking will grow before it’s final. |
Kansai is about 18 miles from Tempozan and about 17 from Naka Pier in straight lines. KATE’s bus covers Tempozan in about an hour for ¥1,800 until 17:10, and Sannomiya in about 65 minutes for ¥2,200 until 23:00. The Bay Shuttle ferry crosses to Kobe Airport in about 30 minutes.
Landing in the evening? The Nikko is attached to Terminal 1. The Getting There table shows what every hotel publishes, and the airport page has the fares and the landing check.
