Fly into Galeão (GIG) for international flights. It’s 16 km from the terminal, about 25 minutes without traffic, per Pier Mauá, and RIOgaleão’s counter-taxi table prints R$ 87 to Praça Mauá at Tariff 1, or R$ 104 at Tariff 2 — nights, Sundays and holidays.
Santos Dumont (SDU), the city airport, sits about 2 km from the terminal; check with your airline whether it serves your route. VLT Line 1 runs straight there for R$ 5, per VLT Carioca — but it doesn’t allow large items, so with cases you’ll want a taxi, not the train. No taxi fare is published from Santos Dumont.
Before any of that, sort the visa — US citizens need a Brazilian visa, per the US State Department.
Take a counter taxi if
- You land at Galeão with luggage
- You want to see the price in a published table before you get in
- You’re arriving at night or on a Sunday; Tariff 2 is R$ 104
Take the VLT if
- You land at Santos Dumont with light bags
- You’re staying in Centro and only carrying a backpack
- You have a Jaé card or the app for the QR code

Who starts cruises in Rio
From the sources we could read on October 12, 2026. Ship assignments change, so check yours.

Pier Mauá’s online calendar showed only October 2026 when we read it. It lists Corazul Buenavista on October 24, 27 and 31, Seabourn Venture on October 29 and Swan Hellenic Vega on October 31 — and it doesn’t mark which calls are turnarounds. Your cruise documents decide the time.

What the ride costs, roughly
The taxi rows are RIOgaleão’s own published fares to Praça Mauá, per car. The bus row is per person, to Terminal Gentileza — it doesn’t include the VLT.

| Counter taxi, Tariff 2 (nights, Sundays, holidays), per car | — |

One way, in reais, as printed by RIOgaleão; its table carries no date. The bus leaves you at Terminal Gentileza, where VLT Line 1 runs to Parada dos Navios for R$ 5 (VLT Carioca’s own fare page, so confirm at the station) — but the VLT bars large items. From Santos Dumont the VLT is R$ 5 a trip.
The executive taxis at door B are dearer: R$ 155 to Centro, per RIOgaleão. Uber picks up international arrivals at door D on the departures floor.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
Pier Mauá’s schedule lists most October calls leaving at 17:00 or 18:00 — but your line sets the check-in close, and it’s earlier than departure. Put in the time from your documents. The first row is the bare ride; the second is our own margin, not a rule.
- The ride, with no trafficAbout 25 minutes from Galeão, per Pier Mauá. That’s the floor, before immigration, bags and your line’s check-in close.—
- A landing with time to spareOur rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 5 hours before the ship leaves on an international arrival.—
International arrivals clear immigration first, and Rio traffic is hard to predict, so we’d come the day before — a delayed flight has nowhere to go, and the ship won’t wait.
Fly in the day before. Taxi to the ship in the morning.
We ranked twelve hotels for a Rio sailing; the port-district ones are the shortest ride to the terminal — by our map, at least. Tell us the flight and the ship, and we’ll pick the night that fits.
The morning you’re back
Disembarkation times come from your line. Galeão is 16 km from the terminal, about 25 minutes without traffic, per Pier Mauá, and Santos Dumont about 2 km. Enter your flight and when you expect to be ashore; the planner sets out the ride and the wait.
Partner links may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes. Every figure is in Brazilian reais.
Visas, bags and the VLT
Sort the visa first. The US State Department says you need a visa to enter Brazil and must be approved before you travel. Your passport needs to be valid for one month at entry, with at least one blank page per stamp. That’s from the State Department’s Brazil page, with travel guidance issued August 6, 2026.
The VLT is the neat answer from Santos Dumont, and the wrong one with a big case — the operator doesn’t allow large items on board or on platforms. It runs 05:00 to 23:00 and takes a Jaé card or a QR code from the Jaé app, R$ 5 a trip per VLT Carioca’s fare page.
Pier Mauá lists no luggage storage — if you finish a cruise with a late flight, ask your hotel to hold bags. For the terminal and the lines, see our Rio cruise guide.
Flying in the day before
One night in Rio takes the risk out of sail day — the port-district hotels are a short ride from the terminal, and Centro is a short taxi.
None of our twelve publishes a ride to the ship, and Galeão is 16 km from the terminal by road, per Pier Mauá. The cards below show straight-line distances from the airport, not routes.
Six for the night before
Our top six, with the straight-line distance from Galeão to each. All twelve are on the hotels page.
Airport to hotel
What each of our twelve says about getting from Galeão to its door. Only Linx publishes a way in, a free 24-hour shuttle. Listings put Rio Aeroporto Hotel inside Terminal 1 — which we couldn’t confirm from the hotel’s own site.
