Windsor Guanabara
A 542-room tower on Presidente Vargas with a rooftop pool, sauna and gym, about 900 m from the terminal by our estimate.
Pre-Cruise Hotels · Rio de Janeiro
Twelve places to stay before a Rio sailing, scored on what gets you to Pier Mauá, not on reviews. The port district and Centro are minutes from the terminal; Copacabana and Ipanema are 8 to 10 km across the city, so the beach costs you a morning taxi.
Three taps and we’ll show your three picks.
Change any answer and the picks change with it. They’re built from the same published facts as the ranking below. No hotel pays for a place here. Booking.com links earn us a commission, and they don’t change the order.
Matching weighs your answers against each hotel’s published shuttle, parking, breakfast, pool, kitchen and pet policies.
Five answers, and the page builds the whole thing: the hotel, the ride in, the ride to the ship, what happens to the car, what time to leave, and how you get home. Every figure is one the hotel, the port or the company publishes, or a straight-line distance between our own map pins. Where nobody publishes a number, you’ll see that instead of a guess.
There’s no cruise parking to price here, so the plan assumes you fly in.
Who’s coming and the mood come from Your Match; the plan uses the same answers.
Partner links may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes. Every figure is in Brazilian reais.
Windsor Guanabara wins: about 900 m from the terminal by our estimate from its street address, with a rooftop pool, sauna, gym and bar. The Novotel Porto Atlântico is second on the same evening points — though about 1.7 km out. Vila Galé is third, with a spa that’s free for guests — its pool carries a renovation notice with no year, so it doesn’t score.
Narrow the twelve by what your night needs. Save the ones you like. Tick up to three to compare side by side — the order is ours, the shortlist is yours.
Twelve hotels, four areas: the port district, Centro and Lapa, Copacabana and Ipanema, and the airport. One of them, Rio Aeroporto Hotel, has its own site, but it wouldn’t load for our reader — so it scores on distance alone.
Add your sail date and the links open on the night before.
Booking.com links are affiliate links: Seabound Journeys may earn a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change our rankings, which come only from what each hotel publishes. Affiliate disclosure.

Pick how you’re arriving. The board counts what each hotel publishes, the table lights up that column, and the cards below are the rides from the airport.
Only Linx publishes a way in from Galeão, a free 24-hour shuttle. Listings put Rio Aeroporto Hotel inside Terminal 1, which we couldn’t confirm from the hotel’s own site, and Booking.com lists a paid shuttle at Fasano. Vila Galé, Santa Teresa and the Copacabana Palace arrange transfers — but don’t publish a fare to the ship.
Rio de Janeiro Galeão · 16 km from Pier Mauá, about 25 minutes without traffic; counter taxi R$ 87 to Praça Mauá
Aerotáxi and Aerocoop, door A on the ground floor by domestic arrivals. The table lists a fare by district and carries no date, so confirm at the booth.
From Terminal 2, per RIOgaleão; then VLT Line 1 to Parada dos Navios. The VLT bars large items.
Transcoopass, Coopertramo, Transcootur and Coopatur, door B on the ground floor. No Praça Mauá row in the executive table.
Driving? None of the twelve publishes cruise-week parking, and Pier Mauá’s VMS lot publishes no price. Hilton and the Copacabana Palace print valet rates for your stay.

Every distance ends at our pin for the Pier Mauá terminal, on the armazéns by the VLT’s Parada dos Navios, and every one is a straight line between our own map pins, not a route, except Gamboa Rio’s, which comes from a listing. Pier Mauá doesn’t publish coordinates or say which armazém your ship uses.
Walking times assume an easy pace on streets about a third longer than the straight line. Only the four Accor hotels’ pins come from a published position; the rest are our estimates from the street address, so treat Windsor Guanabara’s distance as an estimate. Gamboa Rio’s bar is a placeholder, not a measurement — Hotels.com lists it 1.3 km from the Museu do Amanhã, which isn’t the terminal.
Five things make a Rio night before easy or hard. Distance and the evening do most of the work here — in Rio, they do all of it. Points come from the hotel’s own site or its brand’s.
Silence scores zero, not a guess. Booking sites don’t count, and a walking time to “the harbour” isn’t a walking time to a cruise quay.
By band, from our pin for the terminal: within 1 km, 30; 1 to 3 km (the port district, Centro, Lapa and Santa Teresa), 25; Copacabana and Ipanema 15; Galeão airport 10. The two airport hotels are scored as airport, whatever the straight line says. Gamboa Rio sits in the 25 band by choice — our pin is only an estimate, and Hotels.com puts it 1.3 km from the Museu do Amanhã.
A transfer the hotel runs or arranges, with a published price, 25. A ride only inside a package 20. The hotel’s own ride with no published fare 15. A walk the hotel itself prints at half a mile or less 15. No hotel in Rio scores here. Vila Galé and Santa Teresa list transfers with no route or price, and the Copacabana Palace prints airport prices only — none of that is a fare to the ship.
A published rate to leave the car at the hotel while you cruise 20; offered, but unpriced or not guaranteed, 14. Day rates in a public garage don’t count. No hotel in Rio scores here either — valet for your stay doesn’t count.
A breakfast the hotel says is included scores 10. No hotel in our twelve says breakfast is in every rate — Hilton says it’s extra, and the Copacabana Palace prices it for non-guests; nine others list breakfast without saying whether it’s included, so check your rate.
Pool 3, food or a bar on site 3, a kitchen in the room 3, a sauna or spa 3, a gym 3. Windsor Guanabara, the Novotel Porto Atlântico, Hilton and Fasano score 12 of 15: pool, food, spa or sauna, and gym. Vila Galé and Linx both carry pool-work notices with no year, so neither pool scores. Rio Aeroporto Hotel scores nothing here — nothing about it comes from the hotel.
Ties are broken in order: any published parking for your cruise, any stated ride to the ship, free breakfast, then the shorter straight-line distance to Pier Mauá. Vila Galé and Santa Teresa tie on 34, and Vila Galé takes third, about 900 m closer to the terminal. Gamboa Rio, the ibis and Novotel Santos Dumont tie on 28, and Hilton and Fasano on 27; distance splits both. Gamboa Rio goes first of the three on an estimated pin — though it would stay ahead of the ibis, at about 1.7 km, even at the 1.3 km Hotels.com gives to the museum.
What’s left out is deliberate. Room rates move by the day, so they aren’t scored, and review scores neither. Distances are straight lines between our own map pins, not routed walks or drives, and we say so wherever they appear.
No hotel in our twelve publishes cruise-week parking, and Pier Mauá’s own lot publishes no price.
At the hotels. Hilton prints valet at R$ 120 and no self-parking; the Copacabana Palace has no garage, with valet at R$ 60 a day plus tax or private parking at R$ 120. Windsor, both Porto Atlântico hotels, Novotel Santos Dumont, Gamboa Rio, Linx and Vila Galé list parking with no price, and so does Fasano, per Booking.com — all of that is for your stay.
At the terminal. Pier Mauá lists a 24-hour lot on the Boulevard Olímpico, run by VMS, entered from Av. Barão de Tefé. With no published daily rate, there’s no calculator here — email estacionamentoparadadosnavios@gmail.com for a price.
We ranked eleven hotels we could check against a hotel or brand site, plus one airport hotel on listings. Four more names you may see nearby:
| Hotel | Why it isn’t ranked |
|---|---|
| Windsor Astúrias and the Lapa Days Inn | Mentioned in travel round-ups near Centro — but we didn’t read their own sites, so we left them out rather than score them on listings. |
| Hotel Atlântico Avenida and Center Hotel | Listed by Travelocity within about 0.2 miles of Praça Mauá. We couldn’t check either against its own site. |
Galeão is 16 km from the terminal, about 25 minutes without traffic, per Pier Mauá, and RIOgaleão’s counter-taxi table prints R$ 87 to Praça Mauá at Tariff 1. Linx Galeão runs a free 24-hour shuttle if you land late.
Flying into Santos Dumont? The Novotel there is a five-minute walk, per Accor. The Getting There table shows what every hotel publishes, and the airport page has the fares and the landing check.
Tours, tickets and things to do are on Booking.com. Book the day before, not sail day.
Booking.com links are affiliate links: Seabound Journeys may earn a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t change what we recommend. Affiliate disclosure.
On our scoring, Windsor Guanabara: about 900 m from the terminal by our estimate from its street address, with a rooftop pool, sauna, gym and bar, per the hotel. The Novotel Porto Atlântico is second and Vila Galé third.
The Pier Mauá international cruise terminal, Av. Rodrigues Alves 10, Praça Mauá.
Windsor Guanabara is about 900 m away by our estimate from its street address, and Hotels.com lists Gamboa Rio 1.3 km from the Museu do Amanhã; neither figure is a measured walking route. From anywhere else, take a taxi; the VLT doesn’t allow large items.
For the beach, yes, but the Hilton and the Copacabana Palace are about 8 km from the terminal by our map, and Fasano in Ipanema about 10 km. No fare is published for that ride, so leave time for traffic.
None of our twelve says breakfast is in every rate. Hilton says it’s extra, and the Copacabana Palace sells it at Pérgula for R$ 250 plus 10% a head to non-guests; nine others list breakfast without saying whether it’s included, and we couldn’t confirm breakfast at Rio Aeroporto Hotel.
Linx Galeão runs a free 24-hour shuttle, per the hotel. Listings put Rio Aeroporto Hotel inside Terminal 1, which we couldn’t confirm from the hotel’s own site.
