Independence finishes Freedom Class with one of the cleanest cabin-shopping lessons in the fleet: more money can buy more room, a better view, a better location or a better family setup — but rarely all four at once. Decide which one you are actually missing.
Name the problem before you look at the upgrade. If the cheaper cabin already solves it, stop climbing.
Independence is about usable vacation space
Independence is unusually easy to shop once every upgrade has to explain itself in plain English.
Interior
162 sq. ft. on the current class architecture. Cheap can be completely rational when you use the cabin lightly.
Spacious Interior
340 sq. ft., up to six. A huge amount of room without paying for a view.
Ultra Spacious Ocean View

The categories that change the buying decision
Royal's current Independence plan runs July 30, 2026–April 18, 2027 and April 25, 2027–April 15, 2028. The useful numbers below are ship-specific, not borrowed from Freedom or Liberty.

Independence proves why sister-ship copying is dangerous. Its current live plan gives us exact ship-specific balcony and suite measurements, so those replace the conservative placeholders from the first build.
The inside cabin can win on space
The 340-square-foot Spacious Interior is the category that makes Independence interesting for families. It is not glamorous. It is enormous by ordinary inside-cabin standards.
Interior — 162
The room for travelers who are buying the ship, not the cabin. For two people who live outside the room, this can be the value winner.
Promenade View — 153
Slightly smaller than the standard Interior, but visually connected to the Royal Promenade. Privacy is part of the trade because the view works both ways.
Spacious Interior — 340
Up to six. More than twice the published area of the ordinary Interior. This is a function-first family cabin.
The decision
Would your party notice another 178 square feet more than it would notice an ocean-facing window? That is a much better question than 'Which category is higher?'
The family cabin that earns its name twice
Ocean View buys daylight. Ultra Spacious Ocean View buys daylight plus 131 additional published square feet and a dedicated bunk area. Those are different upgrades.
Ocean View — 162
The upgrade is the window. Same basic published room scale, now with real daylight and an ocean view.
Ultra Spacious — 293
The upgrade is space plus family layout. This is not just a larger window cabin.
One bathroom warning
Six berths do not create a second sink, shower or door. Occupancy solves Royal's booking problem before it solves your morning routine.
Two-room comparison
At five or six people, always price connecting cabins. Another bathroom can be more useful than another hundred square feet.
Use the plain balcony as the control fare
Independence gives us a rare clean comparison: standard and Sunset Ocean View Balcony are both currently published at 188 square feet inside plus 53 outside. If Sunset costs more, you are buying the aft view.
Standard Balcony — 188 + 53
This is the control. Up to four. Write down this fare before comparing anything with a better adjective.
Spacious Balcony — 207 + 42
You gain 19 published square feet inside but the published balcony is 11 square feet smaller. 'Spacious' is describing the room, not promising a bigger balcony.
Sunset Balcony — 188 + 53
Same published room and balcony footprint as the standard product, up to three. The aft-facing wake is the upgrade.
Connecting Balcony — 188 + 42
Up to two per cabin on Royal's current listing. Book both and the second bathroom may matter more than any single larger room.
Make the room justify the word suite
Royal currently publishes Independence's Sunset Junior Suite at 299 square feet inside plus a 65-square-foot aft balcony, up to four. That is a substantial room before the wake enters the conversation.

This is not a category-name upgrade. It is a materially larger cabin.

The Sunset Junior Suite adds the wake to a room that already makes a strong space argument.

Useful family capacity, but still compare it with two cabins when bathrooms and privacy matter.
Price the Grand Suite family
Once the fare gets serious, compare the larger suites and connecting-room solution rather than assuming Junior is the natural stopping point.
At this point, opportunity cost belongs in the cabin
The two-bedroom Grand Suite changes the family equation completely: 525 square feet inside, a 208-square-foot balcony and capacity up to eight. At that point you are buying a shared apartment-like setup, not merely a nicer cabin.
Grand Suite — 2 Bedroom
525 square feet inside + 208-square-foot balcony, up to eight. This is a genuine high-occupancy family suite.
Two bedrooms
The value is separation, not just a larger common room. That changes bedtime and multigenerational travel.
208-square-foot balcony
Now the outdoor footprint itself becomes a meaningful part of the suite.
Still price two cabins
Eight people in one suite can be wonderful. Multiple cabins can still win on bathrooms, privacy and total fare.
Independence may be the easiest Freedom sister to shop with a spreadsheet
Independence can sleep six in one big inside, six in an Ultra Spacious Ocean View, eight in a two-bedroom Grand Suite, or split the family across connecting cabins. The right answer depends less on occupancy than on bathrooms and bedtime.

340 square feet, up to six, with a hideaway bunk area. The value case is brutally simple: lots of room, no view.
Ultra Spacious Ocean View
293 square feet, up to six, with dedicated bunks. You give up 47 square feet versus Spacious Interior and gain daylight.
Connecting cabins
Another bathroom. Another door. Another sleep zone. Families often feel those upgrades more than they feel a prettier category name.
Suite
The two-bedroom Grand Suite can take up to eight in 525 square feet plus a 208-square-foot balcony. Compare that shared setup with the privacy of multiple cabins.
The exact cabin is part of the product
Once the category is right, stop shopping by category. Shop the actual cabin number.
Promenade-facing
Central and interesting. Also inward-facing. Decide whether that energy belongs outside your window.
Public deck above
Check before booking if you are sensitive to noise. Residential decks above and below remain the safest simple rule.
Long walks
Freedom Class ships are long enough for an extreme-end cabin to collect its payment in steps.
Connecting door
Excellent when you booked both sides. Potentially less appealing when you did not.

Independence has three unusually measurable upgrades: +178 square feet to Spacious Interior, +131 to Ultra Spacious Ocean View, and +19 inside to Spacious Ocean View Balcony. The rest is about view, layout or suite structure.

Buy 178 additional published square feet and six-person capacity.
