Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a port you walk out of. Ships dock at Pier 2, where the Alexander the Great terminal opened in 2023, and downtown starts about half a kilometer away — roughly a 10-minute walk, with the White Tower about 15 to 20 minutes along the waterfront. The sights that need wheels are out of town: Vergina, Pella and Mount Olympus. The city itself is legwork.

Thessaloniki in brief

Greece’s second city puts its cruise berth right up against downtown, so the first decision here is which direction to walk, not which bus to catch.

Ships tie up at Pier 2, on quays 9 and 10. The Alexander the Great cruise terminal there began operating in early summer 2023, and the port authority formally opened it that November.

It’s about 2,000 square meters, and the port authority says it can handle more than 6,000 passengers and crew from two ships at once. Customs and passport control sit in the same building.

Two ships at once is what the terminal is built for.

CruiseMapper lists a 300-meter maximum ship length for the terminal, while MedCruise’s older profile gives 370 meters at the berth. Ask your line if your ship is a big one.

This is a working port, not a cruise-only pier. You leave through controlled gates before the city takes over.

After that it’s close.

Downtown is about half a kilometer (about a third of a mile) from the berth. From there the waterfront promenade runs east past Aristotelous Square to the White Tower — the walk most people do first.

Which tours are worth paying for, and which just drive you along a seafront you could stroll, is sorted out in our Thessaloniki shore excursion guide. Read it before you book anything on board.

About a 10-minute walk, the first part of it through the working port. One guide calls the Modiano Market an easy stroll from the port.

On foot along the seafront promenade. Sources differ by about five minutes, so plan on the longer figure.

That’s MedCruise’s figure for the walk. In summer heat, one port guide suggests a taxi for the museum.

Up to Ano Poli

The Upper Town is about a 30-minute walk, uphill on uneven streets — bus 23 turns it into a short ride.

The city’s minimum fare is €4, and no fixed fare to the center is published, so ask for the meter or agree the price before you get in.

What's nearby, broadly

White Tower Aristotelous Square Modiano & Kapani markets Rotunda Arch of Galerius Agios Dimitrios Agia Sofia Archaeological Museum Museum of Byzantine Culture Ano Poli (Upper Town) Vergina & Pella

Most of that list sits in the lower city near the water. Ano Poli is the uphill exception, on hilly, uneven streets.

Vergina and Pella are the ones that turn a walk into a drive — Pella about 50 minutes by road, Vergina about 90.

Commonly reached from

Thessaloniki sits at the top of the Aegean, on eastern Mediterranean and Greek-island itineraries that also call at Piraeus for Athens, Istanbul and Kusadasi. Celebrity Infinity is the most frequent caller in CruiseMapper’s October 2026 schedule, with four calls. Azamara, Windstar, Silversea, Viking and Saga also appear that month, and Azamara Quest and Windstar’s Star Legend both stayed overnight. Cruise Timetables shows about 43 calls across 2027. The terminal is also built for turnarounds — so a cruise can start here, not just stop. Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

Euros, and a little cash.

Greece uses the euro, and cards are common in shops and restaurants — carry some cash anyway for taxis, kiosks and market stalls.

Taxis use the meter, with a €4 minimum.

No fixed port-to-center fare is published. The fixed fare to Macedonia Airport was €25 on the single tariff as of September 2026, with a rise to €28 announced and waiting on the government gazette — check it if your cruise ends here.

One port guide says rideshare pickups at the port gate can be unreliable, so a licensed taxi is the simpler choice.

Museum hours change with the season.

The White Tower runs 8:00 to 21:00 daily until November 1, 2026, then 8:30 to 15:30 in November. The Museum of Byzantine Culture keeps 8:00 to 20:00, also dropping to 8:30 to 15:30 in November.

The Archaeological Museum opens 9:00 to 17:00 and charges €10 for a full ticket. Hellenic Heritage’s ticketing page lists Tuesday closings from November through March, but the museum’s own page says daily — confirm before a winter call.

The US advisory for Greece is Level 1 — normal precautions.

The State Department’s concerns are petty theft in tourist areas and demonstrations that can start with little warning. In practice that means pickpockets, not danger — keep bags zipped in crowded squares and markets.

Greece is in the Schengen Area. US citizens visit visa-free for up to 90 days, with a passport valid at least three months past departure. The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been running at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026; ETIAS isn’t in operation yet, and the EU hasn’t announced a start date; it says it will give several months’ notice. Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.

Summer heat is worth planning for.

One port guide notes limited shade on parts of the waterfront. Bring water and a hat, and allow about 45 to 60 minutes to get back to the ship, per that guide.
