Destination Port Guide · Walvis Bay, Namibia

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is a cargo port first. Ships tie up at Berth 9, Namport’s passenger berth, and town is about a mile away, but a port guide says walking it through the working port is discouraged. Take the shuttle or a taxi. The bigger job sits before the cruise: ordinary U.S. passport holders need a Namibian visa, and cruise arrivals have their own day-visit category — sort it out with your line, not at the gangway.

Walvis Bay in brief

Walvis Bay is Namibia’s working harbor — containers and fishing boats first, cruise ships alongside.

Namport calls Berth 9 the port’s designated passenger vessel berth. Its dedicated passenger liner terminal was commissioned in August 2019.

The building is small. A port guide warns that waits can be long. Don’t book a tour that starts the minute you dock.

Namport has begun choosing a contractor for a Berth 9 modification — a new quay wall, jetty work and dredging. A secondary report dated August 30, 2026 says timelines aren’t confirmed, so ask your line whether work affects your call.

Town is close, but the route there runs through a working port.

The center sits about a mile from the pier, roughly a 10-minute walk on paper. Passengers are discouraged from walking it because of the cargo work around them.

Shuttles drop near the Civic Center in the old town, and metered taxis are generally at the pier. On cruise days a crafts market often sets up there too.

The day itself happens out of town.

The Namib Desert runs right down to the coast here. Dune 7, the lagoon where flamingos and pelicans feed, the seal colony at Pelican Point and the dunes of Sandwich Harbour are why ships stop — not the town streets.

Swakopmund, up the coast to the north, is the other draw. Many tours fold it into a desert loop.

Shops are closed on Sundays, one port guide says. Check your call date before you plan a shopping afternoon.

Which of the desert and boat tours earn their fare is sorted out in our Walvis Bay shore excursion guide. Read it after the visa, not before.

Close, but walking through the port is discouraged because of cargo traffic. Ride instead of crossing the quays on foot.

Shuttle
Near the Civic Center, old town

The shuttle stop a port guide gives for town. No fare is published — your line will say whether it’s free.

Taxis
Metered, at the pier

Generally waiting pierside. No official port-to-town fare is published, so check the meter is running.

A port guide says vendors often set up stalls at the pier when a ship is in.

Waterfront jetty
Lagoon boat departures

The dolphin and seal boats leave from the jetty at the Walvis Bay Waterfront. Some lines drive you there. Ask an independent operator how to reach the meeting point, since walking through the port is discouraged.

What's nearby, broadly

Walvis Bay Waterfront Walvis Bay Lagoon Pelican Point Dune 7 Swakopmund Mondesa Township Moon Landscape Welwitschia Drive Sandwich Harbour Namib-Naukluft Park Sossusvlei (by air)

The Waterfront sits close to the berth — one operator puts its pickup gate about a 3-to-4-minute walk from where the ship docks. The boats that run out to Pelican Point and its seal colony leave from the Waterfront jetty.

Dune 7, the Moon Landscape and the welwitschia plants are stops on the desert loops the lines sell. Sandwich Harbour is a 4x4 trip, listed at about 4 to 5 hours — a half-day on its own.

Sossusvlei is a different kind of trip — Holland America and Princess sell it as a scenic flight, not a drive.

All the 2026/27 sailings we found here start in Cape Town. MSC sells five-night round trips from Cape Town on March 11, 16 and 21, 2027, and one listing for the March 16 sailing shows the ship in port from noon on day three to noon on day four — an overnight, not a short call. Longer voyages call too, per our own region hub: Oceania’s Sirena on its February 7, 2027 run from Cape Town to Lisbon, and Silversea’s Silver Dawn, which leaves Cape Town for Dakar on April 11, 2027. Both stop at Lüderitz on the way. See the Cape Town cruise port guide for the start of the trip, and open Walvis Bay on the Seabound Cruise Atlas to see where it sits on the route.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Cruise passengers pay a day-visit visa fee: NAD 300 per person per day.

Namibia publishes a cruise-passenger day-visit visa fee of NAD 300 per person per day for arrivals through Walvis Bay and Lüderitz harbours. Confirm with your cruise line how clearance and payment are handled, including any additional handling charges. Passengers flying into Namibia, embarking or permanently disembarking, or extending their stay should confirm the appropriate visa category.

These rules are for ordinary U.S. passport holders. The standard visa is a separate fee: NAD 1,600 for non-African Union travelers aged 12 and over, U.S. citizens included. A ministry fact sheet and the government fee schedule support the cruise rate. The live application page timed out when we checked, so we haven’t verified a current checkout price. Fees are reviewed annually.

The State Department says U.S. citizens need a visa and encourages applying ahead on Namibia’s online portal with a printed copy of the approval. Your passport needs six months of validity past arrival and three blank visa pages. Officials may ask for your itinerary, proof of funds and insurance — on a cruise, keep your booking confirmation handy.

The money is the Namibian dollar.

A port guide says it trades on par with the South African rand and that most vendors take U.S. dollars. Per the State Department, Namibia limits cash carried in or out to NAD 100,000.

The State Department rates Namibia Level 2: exercise increased caution.

Its advisory, issued May 15, 2026, cites crime and health. Pickpocketing, bag snatching and car break-ins are the crimes foreigners report most, so keep phones and cameras out of easy reach on a busy pier.

It also reports drug-facilitated sexual assault at nightclubs and bars in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. On an overnight call, watch your drink and get back to the ship by taxi.

Pack layers for the boat.

Holland America tells its seal-safari passengers to bring warm and windproof layers. Our advice is to dress in layers you can peel off, not a single heavy coat.

Health-wise, the State Department says yellow fever vaccination is required if you arrive from certain countries in South America or Africa. Check your full itinerary against the rule before you fly.
