Bali (Benoa) in brief
Benoa is Bali’s front door for cruise ships, but it opens onto a harbor, not a town.
Indonesia’s tourism ministry lists a single cruise berth at Benoa’s East Wharf, about 340 m (1,115 ft) long, with a maximum ship length of 270 m. It also marks out an anchorage zone for cruise ships just offshore.
That berth has been growing. Antara reported in July 2025 that the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub now has three cruise terminal buildings for up to about 9,000 passengers, and a pier that took three large ships at once that February.
So the old size limit may no longer hold — but Antara gives no ship-length figure, and we couldn’t find an official one that replaces the 270 m. Your line’s daily program will say whether you dock or tender.
Benoa isn’t the island’s sole cruise port. CruiseMapper lists Celukan Bawang, on the north coast, as a second cruise port, and Indonesia’s visa rules name Padang Bai in the east as a sea entry point too.
Read your itinerary for the port name, not just “Bali”.
This page covers Benoa. From there, the beaches of the south are short drives, and Ubud is a half-day’s commitment once traffic is counted, not a quick hop.
Which tours earn that commitment is the job of our Bali shore excursion guide. Read it before you book anything.
From the gangway to the road
The tourism ministry describes a multipurpose terminal of about 1,100 m² built for about 3,500 passengers. The same page lists an immigration office about 11.5 km from the port. How your ship clears Indonesian immigration is for your line to say.
Kura2bus, a local operator, says its cruise tours start and end at the Benoa Cruise Terminal. Your line’s program names the meeting point for its own tours.
Cruise Deals Tips and Tricks says taxis are there but advises official or pre-booked cars and a confirmed price. We found no published port fare.
The same guide says ride-hailing works in parts of Bali, with pickup rules that change at ports and attractions. Don’t count on a pier pickup.
Ngurah Rai International Airport is about 10 km (6 miles) from the port, per the tourism ministry — handy if your cruise ends here.
Walking gets you around the port area. For beaches, temples or markets, plan on wheels — Tanjung Benoa’s water-sports strip is the near option.
What's nearby, broadly
The tourism ministry’s own distance list puts Jimbaran about 10 km from the port, Nusa Dua and Sanur about 13 km, Seminyak about 15 km and Uluwatu Temple about 24 km.
Inland, the Ubud Traditional Art Market is about 35 km away and the spring-bathing temple at Tirta Empul about 50 km. Those are the ministry’s distances, not drive times — and Bali’s traffic can be severe.
Commonly reached from
Benoa sits on Bali’s south coast. The Cruise Web lists Royal Princess calling in Bali on a 22-night Asia and Australia voyage from Singapore, departing October 30, 2026, and an Azamara Pursuit sailing that calls at Celukan Bawang and then Benoa in November 2026. If your voyage starts or ends in Singapore, our Singapore cruise port guide covers that end; heading south, our Fremantle page picks up in Western Australia. See the wider region on our Asia cruises hub, or open the port on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Visa first.
The State Department says US citizens need a visa for Indonesia, either an e-visa bought online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id within 90 days of arrival or a visa on arrival. It mentions the visa on arrival at the airport, and the 30-day e-VOA for arrivals at Jakarta or Bali airports.
Indonesia’s tourism ministry lists Benoa, Padang Bai and Celukan Bawang among the seaports that accept the e-VOA — but that notice dates from 2023. Ask your line how it handles Indonesian immigration for the call, and buy online if it tells you to.
Passport and arrival card.
Your passport needs at least six months’ validity beyond arrival and two blank pages, per the State Department. It also says to complete Indonesia’s arrival card online or in the All Indonesia app within 72 hours of arrival, and to save the QR code.
Ask how that works by sea. The State Department ties the matching customs declaration to arrivals at international airports, and we found no official note on how ships handle it — ask your line whether you file the card yourself.
Pay the Bali levy.
Bali charges foreign visitors IDR 150,000 per person, once per trip — not once per port. The provincial Love Bali site says plainly that cruise passengers pay it, separate from any visa.
Payment is cashless — card, bank transfer, UnionPay or QRIS — online before arrival or at counters at the airport and port. The voucher arrives by email with a QR code — keep it on your phone. Love Bali says registered cruise agents can pay for whole groups, so check with your line before you pay twice.
Money: the rupiah.
Indonesia uses the rupiah (IDR). Cards work at hotels and bigger tourism businesses, according to Cruise Deals Tips and Tricks, while drivers, markets and temple entries want cash.
Take small rupiah notes ashore, not just a card — that’s what drivers and temple counters run on.
Taxis: agree the price.
We found no official port taxi tariff. Agree the fare and the pickup point before you get in, and get the return time in writing if you hire a car for the day.
Safety: increased caution.
The State Department’s Indonesia advisory, issued July 7, 2026 and re-read October 28, is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, with Central Papua and Highland Papua at Level 4, Do Not Travel. Bali isn’t in those areas — read the full advisory before you sail anyway.
Season.
Shore Excursions Group calls April to October the drier months. Cruise Deals Tips and Tricks rates July to September the most comfortable and December to February the rainiest, when downpours slow the traffic too.
Sources: the US State Department’s Indonesia travel advisory (issued July 7, 2026); the Bali provincial government’s Love Bali levy FAQ; Indonesia.travel’s Benoa cruise port page and its e-VOA notice (updated 2023); Antara on the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub (July 2025); CruiseMapper on Celukan Bawang; Cruise Deals Tips and Tricks on Benoa; Kura2bus on cruise tour pickups; The Cruise Web on 2026 sailings; Shore Excursions Group on the season — all consulted October 28, 2026. No official taxi tariff, current berth length or port shuttle timetable was readable at the source, and we won’t guess at them.

Bali (Benoa) FAQ
Where do cruise ships dock in Bali?
Most dock at Benoa, on the south coast, per CruiseMapper. Some itineraries call at Celukan Bawang in north Bali instead, so check the port name on yours.
Do cruise ships tender in Bali?
Sometimes. Indonesia’s tourism ministry marks an offshore anchorage zone at Benoa and lists a 270 m maximum ship length for its berth, though the port has expanded since.
Your line’s daily program is the source to trust for your call.
Do cruise passengers have to pay the Bali tourist levy?
Yes. The Love Bali site says the IDR 150,000 levy applies to cruise passengers. Pay online before arrival, or ask whether your line pays it for you.
Do US citizens need a visa for a Bali cruise stop?
Yes, per the State Department — an e-visa bought online, or a visa on arrival, which it describes at the airport. For a ship call, ask your line which it expects.
How far is Ubud from Benoa?
About 35 km to the Ubud art market, per Indonesia’s tourism ministry. Cruise Deals Tips and Tricks suggests 8 hours or more ashore for an Ubud day.
Can I walk anywhere from the Bali cruise port?
Around the port area, yes; to sights, no. Take a taxi, a driver or a tour for anything beyond the harbor.
What currency do I need in Bali?
Indonesian rupiah. Cards work at hotels and larger businesses — cash covers drivers, markets and temple fees.
Is Bali safe for a cruise port day?
The State Department rates Indonesia Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, as of July 2026, with two Papua provinces at Level 4. Bali isn’t one of them.
