Hvar in brief
Hvar Town is a harbor town built up a hillside, with the Fortica fortress above it and the harbor below.
On the Seabound map, Seabourn, Explora Journeys and Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection are seasonal callers, with Silversea, Emerald Cruises and CroisiEurope turning up less often.
You arrive by tender, not by gangway.
Cruise-line reports describe ships anchoring in the harbor and running tenders to a pier in the center of town. Silversea’s tour notes add a short walk from the landing to the coach parking lot, since cars are banned inside the old town.
We found no published distance from the tender pier to the square — but the reports place the landing in the town center, so expect minutes, not miles. That’s our reading.
St Stephen’s Square is the hinge of the day.
The tourist board puts the square at about 4,500 square meters and calls it the largest in Dalmatia. Its well dates to 1520, and the paving was finished in 1780.
At one end stands St Stephen’s Cathedral, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Along the harbor is the Arsenal, built in 1579 and used to store Venetian ships. It hosts a theatre the tourist board bills as the oldest communal theatre in Europe, and a Lindblad report dates it to 1612.
The island is bigger than the town suggests.
Stari Grad and its UNESCO-listed farm plain are about a 30-minute drive away, per Silversea. Jelsa’s wineries are about 40 minutes, and the far east of the island takes about 75.
For which of those trips are worth the tender queue, read our Hvar shore excursion guide before you sign up for anything on board.
From the tender pier into Hvar Town
Ships lie offshore and shuttle guests in by tender — your daily program gives the first and last boat times.
Cruise reports put the tender drop in the middle of town; no exact distance to the square is published.
The big paved square, with the cathedral at one end and the Arsenal and theatre by the harbor.
The tourist board’s walking estimate from the center. Its June 2026 list shows the monastery closed for visits.
A hill about 330 feet high above the north side of town. Lindblad guests hiked up; we found no route description.
The trail Silversea’s guided hike follows from town to Mekićevica beach — a walk, not a stroll.
What's nearby, broadly
The first seven sit in or beside the old town, and you can reach them on foot.
The Pakleni Islands are a 10-to-20-minute water-taxi ride. Red Rocks lies about 8 km (5 miles) east of town. Brusje, Stari Grad and Jelsa are reached by road — Silversea’s group tours start at a parking lot a short walk from the landing.
Commonly reached from
Hvar sits between Split and Korčula on Dalmatian itineraries, with Dubrovnik and Kotor often further down the same route. The CruiseMapper schedule behind our map card showed about 7 calls in October 2026, about 7 in May 2027 and about 13 in June 2027 — a small-ship port by any measure. Planning your Hvar day
This page sticks to the tender, the town and the practical bits. The tours themselves, and which ones we’d pass on, have their own guide.
Booking with a third party? Our Shore Excursions Group vs. Viator comparison explains how the two differ — worth a read before a tender day, when a late boat back costs more than a late coach.

Euros, and small change for tickets.
Croatia uses the euro. The tourist board lists €2 for the cathedral and €12 for Fortica, so carry some small change.
The tourist board’s June 2026 hours list.
Fortica opens 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the theatre 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours and fees change, so check before you go. The cathedral opens 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., then 5 to 7:30 p.m. A €15 combined ticket covers Fortica, the theatre, the Arsenal, the Loggia, the Clock Tower and St John’s Church.
The same list shows the Arsenal and the Franciscan monastery as closed for visits — check on the day, not from an older list.
Walk-up water taxis.
There’s a queue, not a timetable: boats to the Pakleni Islands line up in Hvar harbor and leave every few minutes in high season, at least hourly in shoulder months, and rarely off-season. Croatia Ferries quotes a return to Jerolim or Palmižana at about €15, without a date — confirm it at the boat.
We found no published taxi fare or rank for Hvar Town, so settle any car price before you get in.
The US advisory is Level 1.
The US Embassy in Croatia’s site showed the State Department advisory at Level 1, Exercise Normal Caution, on October 29, 2026. Levels change, so recheck before you fly.
Croatia is in the Schengen Area. US passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, and the passport should be valid at least three months past your departure from Schengen. The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026; ETIAS isn’t running yet and has no announced start date, and the EU says it will give several months’ notice; check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly. Follow your ship’s instructions on border formalities for the call.
Shoes for the climb.
Fortica is a hill about 100 meters high, so wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops.

Hvar FAQ
Does Hvar tender?
Yes. Cruise ships anchor in the bay off Hvar Town and bring passengers in by tender to a pier in the center of town.
How far is the tender pier from St Stephen’s Square?
No exact distance is published. Cruise reports place the landing in the town center, so the square should be a short walk.
How do I get up to Fortica?
On foot from the old town. The fortress sits on a hill about 100 meters high, and we found no published route, so ask locally.
Per the tourist board’s June 2026 list, it opens 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and entry is €12.
Is there a combined ticket for Hvar’s sights?
Yes — €15 covers Fortica, the theatre, the Arsenal, the Loggia, the Clock Tower and St John’s Church, per the tourist board.
Can I visit the theatre and the Arsenal?
The theatre is listed as open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for €10. The same June 2026 list shows the Arsenal closed for visits, so ask at the door.
How do I reach the Pakleni Islands?
By water taxi from Hvar harbor, about 10 to 20 minutes by speedboat. A return to Jerolim or Palmižana is quoted at about €15, though the source doesn’t date that fare.
What currency does Hvar use?
The euro. Entry fees are small, so carry some coins and a card.
Is Hvar safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department rates Croatia Level 1, its lowest advisory level, per the US Embassy in Croatia’s site on October 29, 2026.
Watch your footing on the hill and your bag in the crowds.
