Port wine's home valley

A Douro cruise day in Pinhão

Pinhão is a small riverside village, and the lines don't stop for the village. They stop for the quintas in the terraced hills above it. Port is the point.

About 2 h for the day, by our planning estimate

Times are our planning estimates for a typical call, not the line’s schedule. Your daily programme sets the all-aboard.

The call

Pinhão and Régua, twice each

On the Douro, Pinhão and Régua work as a pair, and most weeks pass each one twice. Viking lists them together on day 4: Mateus Palace from Régua, then Port country at Pinhão. Day 7 brings them back, for quintas and olive oil.

Uniworld's day 6 strings Barca d'Alva, Pinhão and Régua together. You choose a quinta tour that ends in a tasting, or a vineyard hike. Its day 3 at Régua is the Douro Museum and a walk in Lamego.

Tauck hikes from Provesende down through the terraces to Pinhão and holds a wine-pairing dinner at Quinta do Portal. Scenic's Delightful Douro with Porto adds kayaking at Pinhão.

No line names a berth in Pinhão or Régua. None says where the ship spends the night, either. Plan on coach excursions into the hills rather than a long town walk.

From the ship: The village and its tiled station are down by the river. The quintas and viewpoints are up the terraces — for those, take the coach or a tour.

In town

The quinta, the station, and Régua's three

A quinta and a glass of Port

The reason for the stop. Uniworld's quinta tour ends with 'a Port tasting with a view over the river'. Viking calls Pinhão 'the epicenter of the Douro Valley's port wine production'.

Pinhão station's tiles

The panels show the grape harvest, the treading and the rabelo boats that carried wine down to Gaia. The station itself opened on the Douro Line in 1880.

Source

Mateus Palace, near Vila Real

The 18th-century manor on the Mateus Rosé label, sometimes attributed to Nicolau Nasoni. Its garden is known for a cypress tunnel. It's about 4 km east of Vila Real, and Viking reaches it from Régua.

The Douro Museum, Régua

'A crash course on the history of Port', as Uniworld puts it. Included on its Régua day.

Source

Lamego

Uniworld's Régua day includes a Lamego walking tour, with a tasting at the end.

Source

A vineyard hike

Uniworld's 'Let's Go' alternative: a walk up through the terraced vineyards, finishing with wine at a local quinta.

Quick answers

Pinhão on a river cruise: questions

Which matters more, Pinhão or Régua?

You'll usually see both. Régua is the base for the Douro Museum, Lamego and Mateus Palace. Pinhão is for the quintas, the vineyards and the station.

Is the station worth the detour?

It isn't one — the station is in the village. Twenty minutes is enough to read the tiles as the story of the wine year.

Do I have to do the tasting?

Not on Uniworld. Its vineyard hike runs at the same time and still ends with wine at a quinta.

Is Mateus Palace the house on the rosé bottle?

Yes, by Frommers' account, and the original grapes grew on the estate. The summer hours it lists are undated, so confirm them before going on your own.
