Five answers, and the page builds the whole thing: the hotel, the ride in, the ride to the ship, what happens to the car, what time to leave, and how you get home. Every figure is one the hotel, the port or the company publishes. Where nobody publishes a number, you’ll see that instead of a guess.

The Podium

The top three

Two in Old Montréal and one just above it. Uville puts the Old Port promenade “a few steps behind us” and includes breakfast; William Gray is “within steps of” the Old Port, and Hilton puts Embassy Suites 0.10 km from it, with a free made-to-order breakfast.

Getting There

From the airport to the hotel, then on to the ship

Pick how you’re arriving. The board counts what each hotel publishes, the table lights up that column, and the companies below run from the airport to the port.

Holland America puts YUL 21 km and about 30 minutes from the port, and the Port of Montréal lists a C$49.45 flat daytime taxi fare from the airport to the Grand Quay. Eight of the twenty are in Old Montréal itself, where the terminals are.

Taxi from YUL

YUL
C$49.45 flat by day

YUL posts a flat taxi fare between the airport and downtown: C$49.45 from 5 AM to 11 PM and C$56.70 from 11 PM to 5 AM. The Port of Montréal says the C$49.45 daytime fare applies between the airport and the Grand Quay, "including taxes, not including tip". Holland America puts the ride at 21 km and about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

STM 747 bus, then a cab or the métro

YUL
C$11.25, a 24-hour pass

The 747 runs 24 hours a day between YUL's door 28 and downtown, generally every 10 to 20 minutes, per Tourisme Montréal. C$11.25 buys a 24-hour pass for the bus, métro, exo train and REM in Zone A, per the STM; pay in exact change, coins only, on the bus. The Port's page still says C$11. It stops at Lionel-Groulx and downtown to Berri-UQAM, where the stop moved on January 26, 2026 to stop 52905 on René-Lévesque at Berri; it doesn't stop in Old Montréal. Holland America says you'll need a taxi from downtown to the pier, and the Port names Square-Victoria and Place-d'Armes as the métro stations for the terminals.

Uber and Lyft

YUL
In the app

Uber and Lyft run from YUL; the fare depends on the kind of ride, the length of the trip and current demand, per Tourisme Montréal. Neither prints a fixed fare to the Grand Quay.

Cruise-line transfers

YUL
Price at booking

Holland America sells airport-to-ship transfers on embarkation day, through your travel professional or its reservations team, without a Montréal price on the pages we read. Viking includes transfers when you buy air through Viking and sells them separately otherwise. Regent includes a 1-night pre-cruise hotel package with ground transfers for Concierge suites and up on the Montréal voyage we read.

Private transfers, via Viator

YUL
Price at booking

Viator lists a private transfer from a Montréal hotel or the port to YUL, and a private transfer from the cruise port into the city. We saw them in search results without prices; Viator's Montréal airport and hotel transfers list said "from $35" in its title, without the currency.

Splurge
Want it nicer?

The splurge list, told straight

These twenty are ranked for an easy sail morning, not for the room. Montréal splits its best rooms: AAA’s two Five Diamond hotels, the Four Seasons and the Ritz-Carlton, are uptown in the Golden Square Mile, a cab from the port. Two Four Diamonds, William Gray and the Nelligan, make our top twenty in Old Montréal.

How far each pick sits from the ship

Montréal’s cruise terminals are on the Grand Quay in Old Montréal. The bands measure from there: Old Montréal itself, the blocks just north of it, the rest of downtown, Laval and the South Shore, and by YUL.

Eight of the twenty are in Old Montréal, seven just north of it, one in the rest of downtown, and four by YUL. None in Laval or on the South Shore made the cut.

How We Score

The Night-Before Score, out of 100

Five things decide how easy the night before is, and each one is scored only from what the hotel publishes on its own site or its brand’s.

If a hotel doesn't say it, it scores zero there — not a guess, zero. Travel sites, tourism listings and review sites don't count, and when a hotel’s own pages contradict each other, we score the claim as unconfirmed and tell you. Each page lists exactly what we couldn't confirm.

30pts

Distance to the ship

By band, from the Grand Quay: Old Montréal 30; just north of it, by the Quartier international and Chinatown, 25; the rest of downtown 20; Laval and the South Shore 15; by YUL 10.

25pts

Getting to the ship

Hotel-run shuttle, free or with a published price, 25. A ride only inside a package or offer 20. The hotel’s own ride with no published fare 15. The hotel says you can walk: across the street, a few blocks, or half a mile or less, 15. A ride the hotel arranges through someone else, or a shuttle company it names, 10. A shuttle that doesn’t name the terminal doesn’t count.

20pts

Parking while you sail

Published rate to leave the car 20, including a package with a published price. Offered, price unpublished 14.

10pts

Free breakfast

Sail mornings start early. A free breakfast on site scores 10, including one inside a mandatory nightly fee.

15pts

The evening before

On the beach 6, pool 3, food or a bar on site 3, a kitchen in the room 3. None of the twenty is on a beach.

Ties are broken in order: the lower published parking rate, any stated way to the ship, free breakfast, parking on site, the closer stated mileage, the lower guest parking price, then the alphabet. That’s why, on 34, the Comfort Inn and the Quality Hotel Dorval, level on every tiebreak, split on the alphabet. On 33, the Residence Inn leads on free breakfast, then the Holiday Inn & Suites (free parking on site), then Saint-Sulpice (the lowest valet, C$45), then the Auberge du Vieux-Port and Place d’Armes, both at $55 and split on the alphabet, then the Nelligan, which lists no parking. On 31, guest parking decides: the DoubleTree at C$25, the Holiday Inn Centreville, the Courtyard, then Le Westin at $48. Monville takes the last place on 28, ahead of W Montréal on its lower valet rate.

What's left out is deliberate. Room rates change daily, so they aren't scored. Neither are guest-review scores — they measure a stay in general, not a sail morning.

The ranking tells you which hotel makes the morning easiest. Your dates and your budget decide the rest, so price your own night before you book the winner.

Parking Math

Where the car goes while you sail

No Old Montréal or downtown hotel prints a rate to leave the car while you cruise. By YUL, four sell park-and-fly offers without a cruise price. The Port’s own lot at the Grand Quay is the simple option; set your cruise length.

Cruise nights
People riding
The Port’s Grand Quay lot, C$40 a day on the cruise contract—

The Port of Montréal’s cruise-passenger rate at the Grand Quay lot: C$40 a day, taxes included, on a contract you email to the Port before you arrive. The Port doesn’t say how the days are counted; we count the day you park and the day you leave, which is our assumption. The Port also posts general rates up to C$55 for 12 to 24 hours in high season, so send the contract if you want the cruise rate.

For the options in town, see Montréal cruise parking, compared.

Just Missed

Twenty-two that just missed

We checked 48 hotels in Old Montréal, downtown, Laval, the South Shore and by YUL. These came closest, with their scores and the reason each fell short. The Four Seasons, the Ritz-Carlton, the Queen Elizabeth and Le Mount Stephen are on the splurge list, with William Gray and the Nelligan.

Permanently closed as of 2022, per Five Star Alliance, and we found no current page of its own.; Hôtel Gault. Its own site still says reservations were closed until March 2025 for renovations, while Bonjour Québec lists it open year-round, so we couldn't confirm it's taking guests. FAQ

Pre-cruise hotel FAQ

What's the best hotel for the night before a Montréal cruise?

On our scoring it's Uville, in Old Montréal: it puts the Old Port promenade "a few steps behind us" and says "breakfast is on us". Hôtel William Gray, "within steps of" the Old Port in its words, is second, and Embassy Suites, which Hilton puts 0.10 km from the Old Port, is third, with a free made-to-order breakfast.

Where does my Montréal cruise leave from?

Montréal's cruise ships use the Grand Quay of the Port of Montréal in Old Montréal, across from the Pointe-à-Callière museum. Terminals 1 and 2 are at 200 rue de la Commune Ouest, per the Port, and Terminal 3 is at the Berri entrance, further east along the Old Port. The Port's schedule lists which terminal each ship uses, and your cruise documents settle it.

Can I walk to the cruise terminal from my hotel?

Three of our twenty say you're steps from the Old Port: Uville, William Gray and Embassy Suites, which Hilton puts 0.10 km away. None gives a distance to the Grand Quay itself. Six more are in Old Montréal too, but they don't say how far the port is, so we don't count the walk.

Should I stay in Old Montréal or by the airport?

In Old Montréal if you can: the Grand Quay is there, and eight of our twenty are too. By YUL suits a car you want to leave: the Comfort Inn, the Quality Hotel Dorval, the Holiday Inn & Suites and the Airport Marriott sell park-and-fly offers, though none of those pages mentions cruises and their shuttles go to the airport.

Can I leave my car while I cruise from Montréal?

Yes, at the terminal: the Port of Montréal parks cruise passengers at the Grand Quay lot for C$40 a day, taxes included, on a contract you email before you arrive. By YUL, four hotels sell park-and-fly offers, from the Quality Hotel Dorval's Stay & Fly packages to the Holiday Inn's Park Stay and Go; none mentions cruises, so ask. No downtown or Old Montréal hotel prints a cruise parking rate.

Which Montréal cruise hotels have a free airport shuttle?

Two of our twenty run a free shuttle from YUL: Quality Hotel Dorval and Holiday Inn Airport. Both are by YUL. From downtown and Old Montréal, the taxi is the easy ride: C$49.45 flat by day between the airport and the Grand Quay, per the Port, and C$56.70 from 11 PM to 5 AM, per the airport.

How do I get from YUL to the cruise terminal?

By taxi, most easily: the Port says the airport's C$49.45 daytime flat fare applies to the Grand Quay, and the airport's night fare is C$56.70. Uber and Lyft pick up at YUL. The STM 747 bus runs downtown around the clock for C$11.25, but it doesn't stop in Old Montréal, and Holland America says you'll need a taxi from downtown to the pier.

Which cruise lines sail from Montréal?

On the Port of Montréal's 2026 schedule, the ships starting or ending cruises here include Holland America's Volendam, Viking Mars, Seven Seas Splendor, Oceania's Vista, Seabourn Ovation, Azamara Journey, Silver Shadow, Star Pride, Scenic Eclipse, Le Lyrial and Crystal Symphony. The big mainstream lines don't turn around here. Your cruise documents confirm your terminal.

Do I need a passport to fly into Montréal for a cruise?

US citizens don't need an eTA to fly to Canada, but they need proper identification such as a valid US passport, per the Canadian government. Your cruise line's documents say what it needs for your sailing.

Why don't you show room prices?

Hotel rates move every day and spike on busy sailing days, so any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it. We rank on what doesn't change daily, like shuttles, parking policies and breakfast, and leave the live rate to the booking site for your exact date.
