Fly into New Orleans. MSY is 15 to 17 miles from the terminals by the cruise lines’ counts, and the city’s flat taxi fare gets one or two of you downtown for $36.
Baton Rouge and Gulfport are the long way round. Neither publishes a distance to the terminals, and between them they have a handful of airlines. Fly into one for the fare, and come in the day before.
Pick MSY if
- You want the flat $36 fare to the terminals’ part of town
- You might land on sail morning
- You’re sailing Carnival and want its $27.99 transfer
Pick Baton Rouge or Gulfport if
- The fare beats New Orleans by more than a car and a day
- You’re landing at least a day early
- You live closer to one of them anyway
West of town, then down to the river
From MSY it’s I-10 east through Metairie toward downtown, then Exit 11C for Tchoupitoulas Street, per Norwegian’s directions, and Tchoupitoulas and Henderson to Port of New Orleans Place. Carnival sails from the Erato Street terminal; Norwegian and Royal Caribbean from Julia Street. Your cruise documents name yours.
The airport, and the long way round
What the ride to the ship costs
Set how many of you are riding. The taxi is a flat city fare that changes with your party, Carnival charges per person, and the private cars are priced by the vehicle, so the cheapest answer changes with the number of bags and people.

One way, before tip, as each company or the city published it on September 25, 2026. The taxi is the city’s flat airport fare: $36 for one or two people, $15 each for three or more. Uber’s figure is its average from MSY to New Orleans, not a quote to the port. CP Transfers adds $125 for pickups before 10:30 AM to a cruise port. The bus stops downtown, not at the terminals. Viator lists New Orleans port transfers from about $46 without always saying whether that’s per person or per car, so it isn’t priced here. Norwegian and Royal Caribbean sell transfers by phone without a published price.
Heading home after the cruise? The flat fare works the other way: $36 for one or two people from downtown to MSY. Carnival’s transfer back is $27.99 a person, and it says not to book a flight before 11:30 AM.
Landing on sail day? Check your timing
The one published cut-off is Carnival’s: land by 1 PM to ride its transfer. Beyond that the yardstick is our own rule of thumb, labelled as ours. Enter your landing time and the departure time from your cruise documents.
- Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsYour flight must land by 1:00 PM to ride Carnival’s $27.99 transfer, which runs 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM.—
- Taxi or rideshare, any lineNo cut-off of its own. The cruise lines put the drive at 30 to 45 minutes. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 2 hours before the ship leaves, and treat your line’s check-in window as the real deadline.—
- Private car, booked aheadCP Transfers charges $175 for a sedan and adds $125 for pickups before 10:30 AM to a cruise port. It publishes no landing cut-off.—
- Car service or rentalNo published guideline, and no official distance to the terminals. Tiger Airport Shuttle quotes downtown New Orleans by the day or night; fly in the day before.—
- Rental car or car serviceNo published guideline, no official distance to the port, and no operator we found publishes a fare. Fly in the day before.—
Whatever the ride, your cruise line’s check-in window is the real deadline. It’s printed in your boarding documents. A delayed flight eats into it fast, which is the whole case for flying in the day before.

The morning you’re back
Ships clear early, flights leave late, and the gap in between is the part nobody plans. Put in your flight and this works out the ride, the wait, and what to do with the bags.
Partner links (transfers, rental cars, luggage storage) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
Can you get to the port without a car?
Almost. The RTA Airport Express (202) runs from outside Door 2 to downtown for $1.25, stopping at Elk Place and the Union Passenger Terminal, and the JET E1 is $2 into New Orleans. Neither goes to the terminals, so with bags you’ll want a cab for the last stretch.
Once you’re downtown, you may not need anything. Six of our top twenty publish a walk to the terminals, from 0.10 miles at the Embassy Suites to under half a mile at the SpringHill.
Bags: the port says an operator at the terminal handles luggage, with rates by phone (504-471-0080). The airport offers storage through Perq Soleil at a price it doesn’t publish, and Bounce lists about 50 spots around the city from $2.25 a day, none of them marked as near the terminals.
Flying in the day before
The day-before flight is the one move that takes sail-day timing off the table. In New Orleans it buys you something most ports can’t: a hotel you can walk from to the ship. It costs a hotel night. It buys you the morning.
Three of our top twenty run a free shuttle from MSY, and all three are out in Kenner or Metairie, 15 miles or so from the ship. None of them publishes a ride to the terminals. Or take the flat fare downtown and stay where you can walk.

New Orleans cruise airport FAQ
What is the closest airport to the New Orleans cruise port?
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY), in Kenner. The port publishes no distance of its own; Royal Caribbean says 15 miles and about 30 minutes, Norwegian 17 miles and about 45, and the city's tourism bureau about 16 miles and 30 minutes. It's the only airport with a real claim on this port.
Should I fly into New Orleans, Baton Rouge or Gulfport for a cruise?
New Orleans, almost every time. Baton Rouge has three airlines and Gulfport five or six, and neither airport publishes a distance to the cruise terminals. If a fare into one of them is much lower, fly in the day before and drive, or book a car: Tiger Airport Shuttle quotes $185 by day from Baton Rouge to downtown New Orleans.
How much is a taxi from MSY to the cruise port?
The city sets a flat fare from the airport to the CBD and the French Quarter: $36 for one or two people, $15 a person for three or more. The terminals are downtown, inside that zone, though neither the city nor the airport names them. Taxis load outside Baggage Claim Door 7 and take cards. A third-party site quotes the city's separate $14 cruise-ship fare for this trip; that fare is for rides inside the city, and it says "or the meter fare", so don't count on it from the airport.
Does Carnival run a transfer from the New Orleans airport?
Yes. Carnival's transfer starts at $27.99 a person each way, runs between 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM on sail day, and your flight must land by 1 PM. The rep waits between Doors 3 and 4. Norwegian and Royal Caribbean both sell transfers without a published New Orleans price.
Can I fly in on the morning of my cruise?
Into MSY, people do. Carnival's cut-off for its own transfer is a 1 PM landing, which is the clearest published yardstick. Otherwise your line's check-in window is the real deadline. Our rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 2 hours before the ship leaves. From Baton Rouge or Gulfport, fly in the day before.
Is there a Priority Pass lounge at MSY?
Yes, one: The Club MSY, open 4 AM to 9 PM. Priority Pass and the lounge's operator put it in Concourse A; the airport's own amenities page says by Concourse B, so follow the signs. A day pass is $60 from the operator. LoungePair doesn't sell passes at MSY.
Is there a bus from the airport to the port?
Not to the port. The RTA Airport Express (202) runs from outside Door 2 to downtown for $1.25, stopping at Elk Place and the Union Passenger Terminal, and the JET E1 is $2 into New Orleans. Neither goes to the terminals, so with bags you'll still want a cab for the last stretch.
Can I fly home the same morning I get off the ship?
The port publishes no debarkation times. Carnival's 4-night Valor sailing is due back at 8 AM, and Carnival says not to book a return flight before 11:30 AM. The flat taxi fare works the other way too: $36 for one or two people from downtown to MSY. The Coming Home tool on this page works the gap out for your flight.
