Sampans and The Lover

A delta day in Sa Dec & Cai Be

Sa Dec is a delta market town with one famous house in it — the home of the man Marguerite Duras wrote about in The Lover. Most ships pair it with Cai Be the same day, and you get around by sampan.

About 2 h for the day, by our planning estimate

Times are our planning estimates for a typical call, not the line’s schedule. Your daily programme sets the all-aboard.

The call

Sa Dec by morning, Cai Be by afternoon

The two towns usually share a day near the end of a southbound cruise, or the start of a northbound one. Sa Dec takes the morning, and the ship moves on to Cai Be.

AmaWaterways tours the town, a market and a Cao Dai temple, then offers candy and rice-paper workshops or an active walk to Kiet Old House. Scenic does the wet market and the house from The Lover, then sails to Cai Be for Tan Phong island, tea at Le Longanier or a cocktail class — and on overnight to My Tho.

Uniworld's 'Sampans and Romance' day covers the Huynh Thuy Le house and a Cao Dai temple before Gieng Island. Viking keeps Sa Dec to its regional market and gives Cai Be to village crafts and homes.

No line publishes the landing at either town. Expect sampans and short coach or walking hops, not a long town tour.

From the ship: Sa Dec's market, the Huynh Thuy Le house on Nguyen Hue Street and Kien An Cung on Phan Boi Chau Street are all in the small town centre; the flower village needs a ride.

Quick answers

Sa Dec & Cai Be on a river cruise: questions

Is Sa Dec the town from The Lover?

Yes. The Huynh Thuy Le house was home to the man Marguerite Duras wrote about in L'Amant, and Scenic and Uniworld build it into the day.

Will I see the Cai Be floating market?

Probably not much of one. Most of the trade has moved onshore, with only a few boats left at dawn.

Which lines stop here?

Viking, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Uniworld and Emerald call at Sa Dec, and AmaWaterways, Scenic and Viking at Cai Be as well. Avalon's delta route uses Vinh Long and Chau Doc instead.

Where does the ship tie up?

No line publishes it for either town. The day runs on sampans and short transfers, so you won't be finding the ship on your own.
