Casablanca

Casablanca is a big, working Atlantic city with a brand-new cruise terminal that doesn’t offer much yet. The center is about 1 km (0.6 mile) from the berth, but the walk runs through port industry so most people ride. The terminal opened in autumn 2025 and has few shops. The Hassan II Mosque, Rabat and Marrakech are the reasons to get off. Each asks for a different slice of your day.

Casablanca in brief

Casablanca is a big, busy, modern city — and not a postcard one. The sights are spread out, not clustered.

Ships dock at the new cruise terminal on the Jetée Moulay Youssef. Ships normally berth alongside, so you walk off rather than tender.

The terminal opened in autumn 2025. A Morocco news report from September 2025 says the first ship, Island Sky, arrived at dawn with about 100 travelers, and that the terminal can handle ships up to 350 meters long.

The same report puts capacity at about 450,000 passengers a year. The facility is modern — though WhatsInPort notes it has few shops or amenities so far.

The city center sits roughly 1 km (about 0.6 mile) away. WhatsInPort puts it at 1,000 to 1,250 meters, depending on where your ship lies.

That walk goes through a working port — WhatsInPort calls it unappealing and says to skip it when it’s hot, which it often is.

The Hassan II Mosque is the sight to plan around. It stands on the seafront Corniche, and non-Muslims go in on a guided tour with a ticket from the on-site office.

Beyond the city, Rabat is about 90 km up the coast and Marrakech about 250 km inland, per our map card. Both are real day trips — and the second one is long.

Which tours earn their fare is the job of our Casablanca shore excursion guide. Read it before you book on board.

On foot from the ship

Docked
Jetée Moulay Youssef terminal

The terminal is new. CruiseMapper lists three boarding bridges and a maritime station; WhatsInPort says shops are few.

∼1 km
To the city center

About 0.6 mile, but the route crosses an industrial port zone. Treat it as a ride, not a stroll.

Shuttle
From the terminal to the center

CruiseMapper says the port runs free shuttle buses; WhatsInPort says free or a nominal charge. No fare is published, so ask your line.

∼€10
Dockside taxi to the center

WhatsInPort’s figure, with taxis waiting at the dock and no meter. The ride back to the ship is often cheaper. Agree the price first.

∼20 min
Casa Port train station

WhatsInPort says it’s a 20-minute walk from the port, or a short taxi. Trains to Rabat leave about hourly.

140 MAD
Hassan II Mosque, adult foreign ticket

Includes the guided tour, which runs about 45 minutes inside. Sold in person at the on-site office, per the information site.

What's nearby, broadly

Hassan II Mosque The Corniche Old medina Central Market Casa Port station Rick’s Café United Nations Square Habous quarter Mohammed V Square Ain Diab beaches Rabat Marrakech

The medina is just back from the waterfront — WhatsInPort calls its streets steep and cobbled. The Central Market sits just inland from the port.

The mosque is the farthest on the near list. We found no published walking distance from the berth to it — so plan a taxi or a tour stop, not a walk.

Rabat and Marrakech are tour territory, not a stroll. A small-group Rabat trip is listed at 6 hours and a Marrakech day at 10 hours — which matters on a call that may last about that long.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Check the entry rules before you sail.

The US Embassy in Morocco’s homepage shows Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, due to the risk of terrorism, with no date and a note that some areas have increased risk. We could not load travel.state.gov itself on October 29, 2026.

EntryRules, a secondary source, says US passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days — with a passport valid at least six months and one blank page. We couldn’t confirm that on an official page, and the embassy homepage doesn’t cover entry rules. Confirm on travel.state.gov, and ask your line what it will accept at check-in.

Pay in dirhams, and spend what you have left.

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD), and leftovers are a problem: WhatsInPort says it can’t be exported or changed abroad.

Hotels, restaurants and antique shops usually take cards, per the same source. Carry some cash for the rest.

Taxis and shuttles have no published fares.

WhatsInPort puts a dockside taxi to the center near €10, unmetered, with the return often cheaper. We found no official tariff.

The port is said to run a shuttle, free or nominal. No operator price is published — confirm with your line, not the dock.

Dress for the mosque.

Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, shoes off inside — a shawl in your bag helps. Holland America’s tour listing also asks women to cover their hair.

Hours and ticket rules shift.

The information sites we read say the interior closes during the five daily prayers, that Friday tours are unpredictable, and that it closes to non-Muslims during major religious events. Check before you count on a slot.

Ticket-office hours differ between the sites we read — check on the day.

Emergency numbers.

WhatsInPort lists police at 19 and the fire service at 15. Keep your ship’s emergency line in your phone too.

No official taxi tariff or shuttle fare is published, and we won’t guess one.

Casablanca FAQ

Can I walk from the cruise ship into Casablanca?

The center is roughly 1 km away, so on paper yes. In practice the route crosses an industrial port area, and WhatsInPort advises against it in heat.

Take the shuttle or a dockside taxi — and keep your feet for the mosque grounds and the medina.

Does Casablanca tender?

Ships normally dock alongside the new terminal on the Jetée Moulay Youssef, per CruiseMapper, which adds that arrangements can change.

How much is the Hassan II Mosque?

A foreign adult ticket is 140 MAD, per an unofficial information site, and it includes the guided tour. Children over six pay 30 MAD and students 70 MAD with ID, per the same unofficial site.

Shore Excursions Group prices the entry at 14 euros on its own listing and says to pay on the day. Treat any figure as a snapshot, not a quote.

Is there a shuttle from the cruise terminal?

CruiseMapper says the port provides free shuttle buses to the center. WhatsInPort says free or nominal. No fare or timetable is published — ask your line.

How much is a taxi in Casablanca?

WhatsInPort quotes about €10 from the dock to the center, with no meter and a cheaper ride back. No official tariff is published, so agree the fare before you get in.

Can I visit Marrakech from a Casablanca cruise stop?

It’s possible — but long. Shore Excursions Group’s Marrakech tour runs 10 hours, about 3 of them on the road in each direction.

October 2026 calls ran from roughly 8 to 16 hours, going by CruiseMapper’s arrival and departure times. A 10-hour tour fits only the longer calls, with a margin to spare.

Do US citizens need a visa for Morocco?

EntryRules says no visa for stays up to 90 days, with a passport valid six months and one blank page. It’s a secondary source — confirm on travel.state.gov and with your cruise line.

What currency do I need in Casablanca?

Moroccan dirhams, spent before you sail. Cards work at hotels, restaurants and antique shops, so keep cash for the rest.
