Five places within an hour or so of the Kiel quay
None of these drives touches a toll road. Pick one or two, not all five.

Every drive here starts at Ostseekai — from Ostuferhafen, add the run around the fjord.
Flensburg sits at 55.9 miles (90.0 km), but we read no hours or prices for anything there — so it gets a line in the table and nothing more.
At Holtenau, a viewing platform over the Kiel Canal locks lets you watch ships go through; the tourism page gives no hours or price. It’s inside Kiel — a short detour, not a day.
Haithabu’s hours change on November 2, 2026, and the Viking houses close for the winter. Check the date before you drive 35.1 miles for them.
Lübeck’s old town and the Holstentor, an hour from the quay
Lübeck is the obvious pick: a UNESCO old town under an hour from the quay.
Lübeck’s old town has been on UNESCO’s list since 1987. The Holstentor museum opens daily 10 AM to 6 PM (closed Dec 24, 25, 31 and Jan 1) and charges €9 from April 1, 2026, under-18s free; a Lübeck day pass is €14. The €9 ticket is about US$10.
The drive is 65 minutes each way on empty roads — a round trip uses about 2 hr 10 min before you’ve parked.
We found no parking price for the old town, so budget for a car park, not a free kerb.
Lübeck’s Herrentunnel toll is on the Travemünde side, off this route; the hub covers it. We couldn’t confirm whether Lübeck has a low-emission zone, so check the city’s page before you drive in.
Leave the quay early. The museum closes at 6 — and the drive back is another hour.
Haithabu: the Viking site a car makes easy
Of the places on this page, Haithabu is the one that really needs a car.
The Viking Museum at Haithabu, on the B76 at Busdorf by Schleswig, opens daily 9 AM to 5 PM until November 1, 2026, then Tuesday to Sunday 11 to 4 with the reconstructed Viking houses shut for winter. Adults €14, reduced €12, children €5, families €29, and the car park is about a 10-minute walk away.
At 35.1 miles (56.5 km) and 46 minutes from Ostseekai, it’s a trip we found no ferry or coach for — the car does the work here.
A family of four pays €29 at the door, about US$35, against two adult tickets and two children’s at €38.
Allow for the walk from the car park — ten minutes each way adds up with small children.
Drive it in the autumn before November 2, while the houses are open.
Laboe’s naval memorial and U 995: by car or by ferry
Laboe is across the fjord from the quay, by road or by SFK’s ferry.
The naval memorial and U 995 at Laboe, Strandstraße 92, open 10 AM to 5:30 PM from April 1 to October 31 and 10 to 4 in winter. A combined adult ticket is €14 (memorial €9, U 995 €8) and a family combined ticket €38. That family ticket is about US$45, our conversion.
It’s 12.9 miles (20.7 km) by our routing, about 26 minutes.
SFK’s F1 Förde ferry runs from Bahnhofbrücke to Laboe, 12 sailings on weekdays and 7 at weekends in its autumn timetable (Sep 7 to Oct 25, 2026), about 70 minutes in the sample we read; the Deutschlandticket is valid on it. Fares follow the Schleswig-Holstein tariff plus an onboard surcharge, and in good weather SFK says boarding isn’t always guaranteed, so allow for a later boat.
That ferry is slower than the car — the 08:05 from Bahnhofbrücke reaches Laboe at 09:15 on SFK’s autumn timetable.
For a single stop at Laboe, take the boat and skip the rental. Combine Laboe with Haithabu, though, and the car starts to pay.
A Lübeck day for two, priced from the Kiel desks
Change the rate, the people or the admission. The miles default to Lübeck and back.
The rental, line by line
Figures in euros, worked out by us; book and the screen gives you the true total. The base is our assumption of €45 a day, ours, not a quote; search your dates for the real price. The admission box starts at €9, the Holstentor museum’s adult ticket from April 1, 2026; under-18s go free, so lower it for children. We found no old-town parking price, so none is included. We treat Germany’s 19% VAT as part of the quote and add no surcharge for a Kiel station desk, since none was printed. Fuel waits for your pump price per litre (3.785 litres to the US gallon, 30 mpg); ADAC’s E10 figure for Sep 29 was €2.258, a motoring-club average. No toll for this drive, and no child-seat charge on file, so type one into the coverage box. Our dollar amounts follow the ECB reference rate of Oct 2, 2026, about $1.12 to the euro; a card statement will show its own.
Two adults, one day at our assumed €45 (about US$50) and two Holstentor tickets: €63 before fuel, our arithmetic.
With ADAC’s €2.258 in the pump box, the 100-mile round trip adds about €28 — call it €91 for the day.
Change the admission to €14 and the miles to Haithabu’s round trip to price the Viking day instead.
Collect early. Three of the four Kiel desks close by 6 PM on weekdays — the checker shows who’s open on yours.
German road rules to know before you collect the car
Most of these come from the US Embassy in Germany and the State Department.
The US Embassy gives 50 km/h in towns, 100 outside them and no general Autobahn limit except where signed, with 130 recommended. The Autobahn’s open stretches are real — and so are the signed limits on them.
Passing on the right is illegal — a US habit to break before you collect the car. Seat belts are required front and back.
Using a phone while driving is illegal, so set the sat-nav before you pull out.
The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%. Plan the day so the driver doesn’t drink at all.
Children under 12 (or under 150 cm) need an approved child seat, and the rear seats are the safe place for them. We found no German child-seat price, so ask the desk for seats when you book.
Winter conditions call for M+S tyres, so ask the desk whether your car has them if you’re touring late in the year.
What a US licence needs is on the should-you-rent page — read it before you book the car, not at the counter.
