The first hours after a Kiel cruise ends
We found no line page that gives an earliest safe flight home from Hamburg. Plan the morning around the desks instead.
The rides away from the quay run on a short morning clock, not all day.
AIDA’s FAQ says its return shuttle runs “i.d.R. bis 11 Uhr”, usually until 11 AM on disembarkation day. Don’t count on it after lunch.
The airport shuttle runs to the ship “regularly from 10:20 a.m.” and comes back from 30 minutes after docking, 7 AM at the earliest, until 11 AM. That’s for passengers who parked at Kiel Airport, but it’s a fair guide, on our reading, to when the port expects the quay to empty.
If you’re collecting a rental, you’re not waiting on either — you need a counter that’s staffed when you get there.
From Ostseekai, the station desks are 1.3 miles (2.0 km) away by our routing — or the 15-minute walk AIDA quotes, in reverse.
Book the pickup for late morning, not the minute the ship docks.
Who takes a car back, and who hands one out, on a Kiel weekend
A key box solves a late return. It doesn’t hand you a car on a Saturday afternoon.
| Desk | Weekend hours | Out-of-hours return | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sixt, Kiel Hauptbahnhof (self-service) | Key box, every day, no staff | CAP car park, level P4: “select Return” on the panel | Sixt page |
| Sixt, Tonberg 15 | Sat to 2 PM · Sun 8–noon | “24h Return” to the bays out front | Sixt page |
| Enterprise, Kaistraße | Sat closed · Sun 9–noon | “After-Hours Returns Available” | Enterprise page |
| Avis, Wall 38 | Sat to 11 AM · Sun not listed | 24-hour drop-off | Avis page |
| Sixt, Hamburg Airport | Sun 8 AM–11 PM | 24h return by key box | Sixt page |
| Avis, Hamburg Airport | Sun 11 AM–6:30 PM | No after-hours wording read | Avis page |
From each company’s own page, read Oct 3–4, 2026. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Returns are the easy half. Each Kiel desk prints some form of out-of-hours drop — from Sixt’s key box to Avis’s 24-hour drop-off.
Pickups are the hard half — and the half that matters after a cruise, not before it.
Enterprise lists Saturday as closed, and its Sunday runs only until noon. Avis lists nothing for Sunday.
Sixt at the station is open every hour of every day, but only as a self-service key box. Nobody is there to help.
Full weekday hours and an open-now checker are on the hub.
Enterprise adds a refuelling service fee if the tank comes back lower than it left, so fill up before the key goes in the box.
Photograph the fuel gauge and the bodywork when you drop out of hours — nobody signs the car in.
From the MSC and Costa quay back across to the rental desks
MSC and Costa passengers start disembark day on the wrong side of the water for every rental desk.
Ostuferhafen is 5.0 road miles (8.0 km) from the Hauptbahnhof by our routing, about 13 minutes on empty roads — and Enterprise on Kaistraße is 4.4 miles from the quay.
Bus 11 or the 60S from Grenzstraße, 200 m from the terminal, runs back toward the station; MSC says the ride can take up to 30 minutes, and a single is €3.00.
MSC’s paid station shuttle is described for embarkation day. We didn’t find it offered in the other direction.
A taxi is the quick way: MSC’s US page estimates about 15 minutes and €20–25 (about US$20–30) between the station and Ostuferhafen — its figure, not a published tariff.
Ask MSC’s guest services on the last evening how passengers get back to the station, then book the car for an hour after that.
Driving a Kiel rental back to Hamburg Airport
The calculator is set for a one-way run from the Kiel desks to Hamburg Airport. Change it to fit your plan.
The rental, line by line
Euro totals from our own sums; the booking screen settles the real price. The €45 a day is our assumption, our own, not a quote; search your dates for the real price. No VAT is added, on our assumption that the quote already carries Germany’s 19%, and no station fee, since no Kiel desk page printed one. Collecting in Kiel and returning at Hamburg Airport is a one-way rental: type the fee your quote shows into the drop box, because no brand printed one. Fuel counts once you enter the pump price a litre, converted at 3.785 litres a US gallon and 30 mpg; ADAC, the motoring club, averaged E10 at €2.258 on Sep 29. There’s no car toll on the way to Hamburg and no seat price on file. Dollars here are converted at the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate (about $1.12 a euro); your bank’s rate will differ.
Two travellers, one day at our assumed €45 (about US$50), collected in Kiel and dropped at the airport: €45 before fuel or the one-way fee.
ADAC’s €2.258 in the pump box adds about €17 for the 59 miles, so roughly €62 all in, our arithmetic.
Two Kielius seats back to the airport cost €52, about US$60 — for a couple heading straight to a flight, the simpler choice.
Sixt at Hamburg Airport takes returns round the clock in its key box at Hans-Grade-Weg (Mietwagenrückgabe), not at the terminal; Avis there opens at 11 on Sundays.
Our routing says 66 minutes; AIDA allows an hour to an hour and a half for the same run by taxi — leave with the longer figure in mind.
Carrying on into Denmark in a Kiel rental
Enterprise Kiel prices cross-border driving per day, with a cap. Denmark is on its list.
Enterprise Kiel needs your authorisation for driving abroad and charges €5 a rental day for it, capped at 10 days; Denmark is on its permitted list. The €5 is about US$6 a day.
At the 10-day cap, the most you’d pay is €50 — about US$55, our arithmetic, however long the trip.
Enterprise wants that authorisation arranged, so tell the desk at pickup, not after the border.
We didn’t read Sixt’s or Avis’s cross-border terms for Kiel, so check them in the rental conditions if you book either.
A Kiel car dropped in Denmark is a one-way rental into another country, and we found no fee for it — the Copenhagen rental page covers that end.
We didn’t find what Enterprise charges if you cross without it. Ask at the desk, not at the border.
