Four taps that settle the car question for a Kiel sailing
How you arrive, what fills the days, the headcount and the paperwork. Tap one answer per row.
The second row does most of the work.
Ostseekai is a walk from Kiel’s station, and Hamburg is about an hour away by train — so a car only starts to matter once the plan leaves the city.
Headcount matters too. The coach is priced per seat, and four fares on the Kielius add up fast.
The permit row isn’t a formality — read what the German rules say before you tap “No”.

From Kielius, Hamburg Airport, Deutsche Bahn, MSC, AIDA and NAH.SH pages. Checked Oct 3, 2026
The Kielius coach runs from Hamburg Airport’s Airport Plaza to Kiel’s bus station (ZOB) via Neumünster: €26 one way online or €27 on board, €48 or €49 return, €15 for a child single online. That’s about US$30 for each person.
The summer timetable (March to October) runs about 13 times a day, each trip roughly an hour and 35 minutes, from 5:50 in the morning to 11:45 at night. From November a winter timetable applies; check kielius-onlinebuchung.de for your date.
The Deutschlandticket isn’t valid on it. Kielius’s fare page lists card payment on board, but a notice about four newer coaches said otherwise, so carry a few euros. Online tickets close one hour before departure, and a limited number of Sparpreis seats start at €16.
The coach stops at the ZOB, which MSC places about 200 m from the station. From there, Ostseekai is the walk in the next section.
The S1 runs from the airport to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof every 10 minutes and takes 25 minutes — the first leg if you’d rather take the train.
The only Kiel meter tariff we found is on a fare-calculator site and dates from January 2024, so we print no metered fare. MSC’s US page does estimate the station-to-Ostuferhafen taxi at about 15 minutes and €20–25 (about US$20–30). Treat that as the line’s guide and agree the fare first.
For four people, the coach comes to €104 one way, about US$115 — the number to beat when you price a car on the airport page.
From Kiel station to Ostseekai or across to Ostuferhafen
Which quay your line uses decides whether you walk or ride the last mile.
AIDA says Ostseekai is about 15 minutes on foot from Kiel Hauptbahnhof, and we re-read that on Oct 4, 2026; by road our routing makes it about 1.3 miles.
Ostuferhafen is a different story — the east bank is a drive or a bus ride away, not a stroll.
City bus 11 (toward Dietrichsdorf) or 60S from the Hauptbahnhof stops at Grenzstraße, 200 m from the Ostuferhafen terminal; MSC warns it “can take up to 30 minutes”. A Kiel single ticket costs €3.00 from April 1, 2026, about US$3 a head.
On embarkation day MSC runs a paid shuttle from Kiel Hauptbahnhof to Ostuferhafen until four hours before departure, booked on the spot with its hostesses. MSC’s international, US and Irish pages say €15 a person or €25 return; its Finnish page still says €10. Plan on €15.
AIDA runs a free coach from Hamburg and Kiel Hauptbahnhof to the ship for Rail&Cruise ticket holders; others pay what AIDA calls “einen kleinen Aufpreis” (a small surcharge), with no amount given. TUI sells a Rail&Cruise ticket from any German station with the shuttle included.
If your line sells Rail&Cruise, price it before you price a car — the coach to the ship comes with the ticket.
A US licence in Germany: what the law says, and what Enterprise says
German law, two US government pages and a rental desk give four answers. Read them in that order.
Germany’s licensing regulation (FeV §29) and a Rhineland-Palatinate state fact sheet say a non-EU licence that isn’t in German must come with an International Driving Permit or a German translation. The exempt list is Andorra, Hong Kong, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Senegal and Switzerland, and the US isn’t on it.
The State Department says a valid US licence lets you drive in Germany for up to six months; the US Embassy’s page says up to 364 days for stays under a year. Both are about how long you may drive, not about what you carry.
Enterprise Kiel calls the permit “recommended, but not required” for licences in Latin script, and says you can’t rent on the permit alone.
So the regulation and one rental company disagree. A counter that waves you through doesn’t help at a roadside police check — there, the law is what counts.
Carry the permit with your US licence, not instead of it, and get it before you fly.
Where a car earns its place on a Kiel trip, and where it sits idle
Most Kiel cruise trips split cleanly into car days and no-car days.
Rent when
- You’re touring Lübeck, Haithabu or Flensburg for a day or more before or after
- Four or more of you are coming from Hamburg Airport with bags
- You’re carrying on to Denmark afterwards (Enterprise Kiel allows it, for a fee)
- You land late and want to be in Kiel tonight, not on the last coach
Skip it when
- You’re going straight from the airport to the ship
- Your line sells Rail&Cruise with the shuttle included
- You’re sailing from Ostseekai and staying near the station
- Nobody in the group has a permit and you can’t get one before you fly
A car parked at the quay for a week is the worst of both worlds.
The hub page prices it — rent plus Port Parking runs into the hundreds of euros for a car that never moves.
Rent for the days you drive, and hand it back before you board.
If the answer is yes: booking for the days you drive
Book the car for the touring days, not the cruise.
If you’re collecting in Kiel, check the hours checker first — the Saturday gap catches people.
Search your dates: Kiel pick-ups vary by day, and the one-way fee shows in the total.
Our own dollar figures here use the ECB’s Oct 2, 2026 reference rate, about $1.12 a euro; your card company sets its own.

- Pick-up line shows the counter: key box or staffed

Car or no car in Kiel: the questions behind the decision
Do I need a car for a cruise from Kiel?
Not to reach the ship. The Kielius coach runs from Hamburg Airport to Kiel for €26 online, trains run from Hamburg, and Ostseekai is about 15 minutes’ walk from Kiel Hauptbahnhof per AIDA. A car helps for day trips to Lübeck, Haithabu or Laboe.
Do Americans need an International Driving Permit in Germany?
German rules (FeV §29) say a non-EU licence not in German needs an International Driving Permit or a German translation, and the US isn’t exempt. Enterprise Kiel calls the permit recommended but not required for Latin-script licences. We’d carry one.
How long can I drive in Germany on a US licence?
Up to six months, per the State Department. That covers how long, not what you carry: the permit question is separate.
How do I get from Kiel station to the MSC terminal?
Bus 11 toward Dietrichsdorf or the 60S to Grenzstraße, 200 m from Ostuferhafen, for €3.00; MSC says it can take up to 30 minutes. MSC also runs a paid shuttle from the station on embarkation day: €15 a person or €25 return on its international and US pages (its Finnish page still says €10). Plan on €15.
Can I walk from Kiel Hauptbahnhof to the cruise ship?
To Ostseekai, yes: AIDA puts it at about 15 minutes on foot. Ostuferhafen, where MSC and Costa dock, is across the fjord and needs the bus, the shuttle or a car.
