Disney sails from here too, and that changes the drive
Disney Cruise Line runs the Disney Dream on 4- and 7-night sailings and the Disney Destiny on 5-night ones from Fort Lauderdale, boarding at Terminal 4, 1800 SE 20th Street (its terminal page lists Terminals 2 and 26 too).
So a parks-then-Dream week means a trip of 200-plus miles south, not the short hop east to Port Canaveral — treat the drive as a day of the trip.
We’re based in Winter Garden, just west of the parks. Orlando-to-Fort-Lauderdale is a trip we put together often, and if you’d rather someone else sorted the park days, the night before and the drive, that’s our job — at no extra cost to you.
A one-way rental is priced by the car, while Brightline and the bus are priced by the seat, and Brightline charges for every checked bag on an Orlando trip. At two travelers the bus is hard to beat; at six the car wins outright.
The car makes sense if
- You’re a party of four or more, or traveling with a mountain of luggage
- You’d like to stop where you please; five Turnpike service plazas sit along the way
- You’re going down the day before
- The car seats are coming with you regardless
Take the train, the bus or a flight if
- It’s a couple, or a solo traveler, packing light
- No one in the group wants four hours at the wheel after a week of parks
- The drive would fall on sail morning with no slack
- You fly home from Orlando and don’t fancy the drive twice
2, 4 or 6 people, one way to the ship
| Travelers | One-way car from a hotel desk | Brightline, a bag each, then a taxi | RedCoach, then a taxi | Lowest total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $105 Midsize car, $45/day assumed | $159 | $71 | Bus |
| 4 | $121 Standard SUV, $60/day assumed | $297 | $121 | Bus |
| 6 | $142 7-passenger minivan, $80/day assumed | $435 | $171 | Rental |
The car column is our base rate from a hotel desk, so no airport charges, with Florida’s $2 surcharge and Orange County’s 6.5% tax. It adds plate-rate Turnpike tolls plus the $4.95 toll-day fee Enterprise, Alamo and National charge, and fuel for 208 miles at 30 mpg and $4.37; a one-way drop charge, if any, is extra. Brightline is its $39 promotional fare with one $30 checked bag each, and the train and the bus both finish with the port’s $21 FLL taxi figure — one cab, four seats. Illustrative
Four is the row to look at twice.
The car and the bus land on the same dollar. What decides it is everything the receipt leaves out — door to door, your own schedule, nobody dragging bags through a bus stop.
Brightline trails at every size once a checked bag each is in, and that’s a real cost on the train, not a rounding error.
Four ways down the peninsula
| How it works | Time | The catch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way rental | Collect it at MCO or a Disney or Universal hotel desk; return it at FLL or the port’s cruise office | Roughly 4 hours on empty roads, plus stops | Tolls, fuel, and somebody has to drive |
| Brightline | From the station at MCO’s Terminal C to Fort Lauderdale; 16 round trips a day, hourly | About 3 hours by Royal Caribbean’s figure, then 3 miles to the port | Anything bigger than a carry-on is checked, from $30 a bag, and Brightline lists no shuttle from the station |
| RedCoach bus | Coach from its Orlando stops (Kissimmee, McCoy Rd or UCF) to FLL airport | 3 hours 5 minutes at the fastest | Reaching its Orlando stop is up to you, and so is the taxi at the far end |
| Fly | JetBlue (twice daily since May 21, 2026) and Southwest fly MCO to FLL nonstop | A short flight, plus two airports | Airport security, bag fees and two terminals, so it only works with no car at either end |
Read Sept 28, 2026: Brightline’s own pages for the station, frequency and bags; RedCoach’s route page; MCO’s US service list and JetBlue’s January 2026 announcement for the flights. Checked Sept 28, 2026

Run all four for your own group
Start with the head count, then the rate on your quote and where you’ll collect the car; every other line is editable too.
The rental, line by line
We assumed $45 a day, which makes this an estimate, not a quote. Discover Cars’ own “from” prices on Sept 28, 2026 were $8 a day at FLL and MIA and $33 at Palm Beach. It warns that its US prices can exclude some taxes and surcharges — so type the rate and any one-way drop charge your quote shows. FLL, MIA and Palm Beach don’t post their rental charges as numbers (news reports put Palm Beach’s at $6 a day), so the airport fee % is our assumption. State law adds $2 a day; by Florida DOR’s 2026 surtax table, Broward and Miami-Dade tax at 7% and Palm Beach and Orange at 6.5%. Fuel runs at 30 mpg and $4.37 a gallon, AAA’s Florida average on Sept 27, 2026; tolls are our own addition of the Turnpike’s posted rates, I-4 to I-595. The $39 Brightline fare is its SMART SAVER promotion, good on trips through Nov 19, 2026 if you book 14 days out, and regular fares may be higher. RedCoach’s $24.99 is a “from” fare; every other ride uses the operator’s own published one-way price.
Flip the pickup to MCO. The airport charges show up in the total.
Then set the group to two and the bus moves to the front — that one click is the whole argument of this page.
How the Turnpike charges you, and where it lets you stop
Head south on Florida’s Turnpike and leave at Exit 54 for I-595 East, the way the port’s own directions go.
It’s 208 to 211 miles from MCO, Disney Springs or Universal by our route estimate. Call it four hours with no traffic — nobody publishes an official figure.
Southbound, the service plazas come in this order, each with fuel and EV charging by the Turnpike’s account: Canoe Creek (mile 229), Fort Drum (mile 184, roughly halfway), Port St. Lucie/Fort Pierce (mile 144), West Palm Beach (mile 94), Pompano Beach (mile 65).
Tolls are the one real cost besides fuel. We added up every published rate between I-4 (Exit 259) and I-595 (Exit 54): the gantries from Three Lakes to Lantana, the Pompano Beach plaza and the I-4 ramp row. That comes to about $15.29 on a transponder or $19.92 by plate, or $14.71 / $19.06 without the ramp row.
That’s our arithmetic, not an official figure: the Turnpike publishes no trip total, and its calculator wouldn’t load for us.
Starting at MCO? The Beachline or S.R. 417 onto the Turnpike adds a toll or two we haven’t priced.
| Rented from | The day you touch a toll road | Ceiling | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise, Alamo, National (TollPass) | $4.95, plus each toll at the video, cash or undiscounted rate, whichever is highest; it starts by itself | $34.65 a rental | terms |
| Avis, Budget (e-Toll) | $6.95, plus tolls at non-discounted rates (not to be confused with e-Toll Unlimited, which bills every rental day) | $34.95 a rental | terms |
| Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty (PlatePass All-Inclusive) | $14.99 in Florida for every rental day, used or not, tolls included. Decline it and still drive through a cashless toll: $9.99 for that day, plus tolls | A weekly maximum we couldn’t confirm | terms |
| A SunPass, SunPass PRO, E-PASS or E-ZPass of your own | Just the toll, once the rental’s plate and dates are on your account; remove them when you’re done. The 95 Express lanes, which take no toll-by-plate, accept nothing else | — | SunPass |
Checked on each company’s toll page on Sept 27, 2026; the same rules apply wherever in Florida you rent. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Because it’s a single toll day, TollPass or e-Toll costs you one day’s fee — $4.95 to $6.95 — plus the tolls at plate rate; PlatePass works differently, as the table shows.
If you own a SunPass, E-PASS or E-ZPass, bring it and add the rental’s plate — you skip both the fee and the plate premium, roughly $10 all told.
If you can, drive down the day before
Four hours becomes five with lunch and an ordinary Florida afternoon.
Set off from Orlando on sail morning and the whole week rides on I-4 and the Turnpike behaving themselves. That’s a bet we wouldn’t make.
We’d go the day before. Drop the car at FLL that evening, where Avis and Budget never close, and let a hotel airport shuttle take it from there — twelve of the twenty hotels we rank near the port run one.
The other version keeps the car overnight and hands it to the cruise office in the morning, whose free shuttle runs to the pier. For the bed, start with our 20 picks for the night before.
Driving on sail day regardless? Put your arrival time into the checker before you pick the cruise office as the drop-off.
A hotel desk, not the airport counter
| Pickup | What to know | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Universal hotel Avis desks | Avis runs desks in several Universal hotels, 7 AM to 7 PM daily, and says “One-way rentals must be requested at time of booking.” Cabana Bay’s desk takes returns only in office hours. | Avis |
| Walt Disney World Car Care Center | Enterprise, Alamo and National share it, 7 AM to 6 PM daily, with a free shuttle from select resorts if you book 2 hours ahead. Neither Disney nor the companies say whether a one-way to Fort Lauderdale is offered there, so price one before you plan around it. | Disney |
| Orlando airport (MCO) | Every major company, the widest spread of one-ways, and the airport’s charges on top: a reported $9-a-day facility charge plus concession fees. Worth it if you land that day and drive straight down. | MCO |
Collect the car away from the airport and you shouldn’t pay airport charges, though Orange County’s 6.5% tax applies at all three. Checked Sept 28, 2026
Disney’s and Universal’s desks, and what their parking costs, are covered on our Port Canaveral pages for Disney World and Universal — same desks, a different port.
When the cruise comes first
Plenty of families flip it: the ship first, the parks after.
The Miami Road cruise office opens at 8. Its shuttle, Avis and Payless say, “will meet passengers at the pier,” so a car collected the morning you’re back can have you in Orlando by mid-afternoon.
Make the return a Universal hotel desk or MCO.
A Disney resort stay doesn’t need the car once you’ve checked in, since buses, boats, the monorail and the Skyliner cover the parks; picking up after a Port Everglades cruise has the details.
Ready to price the one-way?
Pick up at MCO, a Universal hotel or the Disney-area office. Drop off in Fort Lauderdale, and any one-way charge appears before you pay.
- Pick-up: MCO or an Orlando desk
- Drop-off: FLL or the cruise office
- One-way fee counted in the total
- Cancel free until 48 hrs out

The Orlando-to-Fort Lauderdale questions
How far is Orlando from Port Everglades?
We make it 208 to 211 miles from MCO, Disney Springs or Universal, roughly four hours on Florida’s Turnpike and I-595 when traffic is light. That’s our route estimate, since nobody publishes an official one, and five hours is safer with a stop.
How much are tolls from Orlando to Port Everglades?
Our sum of the Turnpike’s published rates from I-4 to I-595 comes to about $15 with a transponder and about $20 by plate; the Turnpike itself doesn’t publish a trip total. In a rental, the company’s toll program adds a day’s fee on top.
Is Brightline or a rental car better from Orlando to a Fort Lauderdale cruise?
It turns on head count. On our assumed rates, one or two people usually pay least on the RedCoach bus, and a couple beats the car on Brightline’s $39 promo fare only if they travel on carry-ons alone. At four the car and the bus come out about even, and past that the one-way car pulls ahead, because Brightline charges by the seat plus $30 for each checked bag, and it lists no shuttle from its Fort Lauderdale station to the port.
Does Disney Cruise Line sail from Fort Lauderdale?
Yes, from Terminal 4 at 1800 SE 20th Street. The Disney Dream sails 4- and 7-night cruises from Port Everglades, and the Disney Destiny sails 5-night ones.
Can I rent a car at Disney World and return it in Fort Lauderdale?
Possibly. Enterprise, Alamo and National run a desk at Disney’s Car Care Center, but neither Disney nor the companies say whether a one-way to Fort Lauderdale is offered there, so price it first. Avis’s Universal-hotel desks allow one-ways if you ask for one when you book.
Is there a Disney transfer from Walt Disney World to Port Everglades?
We found none. Every Disney transfer we could find at Fort Lauderdale starts at FLL airport or a nearby hotel, not in Orlando.
More on renting around a Fort Lauderdale cruise
A Disney week, then a Fort Lauderdale ship?
Send the dates and the head count. We plan from Winter Garden, just west of the parks, and we’ll line up the park days, the drive and the night before around your sailing.
