What all four share
Start here, because it is most of the ship. Understanding how little varies is what makes the variations worth paying attention to.
All four Lady Ships came out of Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente yard near Genoa to the same design: roughly 110,000 gross tons, 17 decks, about 2,770 guests and around 1,160 crew. The name is a play on “your ladyship,” a nod to Virgin Group’s British roots, and each bow carries its own mermaid figurehead.
The shared list is long: The Manor, the two-storey nightclub named after the studio Virgin Records began in; The Galley, the food hall that replaced the buffet; The Aquatic Club, The Dock, The Athletic Club with its boxing ring, Redemption Spa, the red running track, and Squid Ink, the first tattoo studio at sea. Cabin categories are identical too, all built around the Seabed — a sofa that converts to a bed and faces the window rather than the wall.
The rules are shared as well, and they are the reason people book: adults only at 18 and over, no buffet, no formal night, no children anywhere, and no cover charge at any restaurant. Why Virgin built it that way is a longer story, told in how Virgin broke into cruising by turning most people away.
The only four differences

How to actually choose
In order. Most people do this backwards and start with the ship.
1. Pick the region and the dates. This settles it most of the time, because only one or two ships will be in the right ocean on the right week. On a fleet where the hardware is uniform, arguing about ships before you have fixed the map is wasted effort.
2. Pick the length. Short warm-water breaks are Scarlet’s Miami speciality. Port-dense European weeks are Valiant’s. Long runs with real sea days are Resilient’s. Alaska and the Pacific are Brilliant’s alone. Length changes what you are buying more than the ship does.
3. Only then, break the tie on the ship. If two sailings genuinely work, choose on the restaurant you cannot get elsewhere, or on how recently the ship was refreshed. Those are real differences, but they are tiebreakers — not reasons to take a worse itinerary.
People book the newest hull on instinct. On this fleet that instinct misfires, because the newest hull and the most recently refreshed interior are two different ships — Brilliant Lady entered service in September 2025, but Valiant Lady came out of a 2026 drydock with newer rooms and a newer show lineup. If “new” is what you are paying for, work out which kind of new you actually mean.

What it costs, fleet-wide
Fares work the same on all four, and the structure changed materially in late 2025.
Gratuities came out of the fare. They are now charged separately at $20 per sailor per night if prepaid, or $22 if posted to your onboard account, at the same rate in every cabin category including the suites. Bookings made before that date keep the older all-in Legacy Fare.
The rest moved to VoyageFair Choices, three tiers for Sea Terrace cabins and below: Base (non-refundable, Basic Wi-Fi one device, dining reservations at 15 days), Essential (Classic Wi-Fi, 45 days, name changes permitted), and Premium (streaming Wi-Fi on two devices, 60 days, priority support, an included Bar Tab credit). RockStar and Mega RockStar suites sit outside the tiers with the earliest dining access.
Still included on every ship and every tier: all 20-plus eateries with no cover charge, basic beverages, unlimited group fitness classes, and all entertainment. Alcohol, excursions and spa treatments are extra, and there is no drinks package — you pre-load a Bar Tab instead.

Almost. Scarlet, Valiant, Resilient and Brilliant Lady share a hull, propulsion and layout from Fincantieri at around 110,000 gross tons and roughly 2,770 guests. Four things genuinely differ: the restaurant in the Razzle Dazzle space, where each ship is deployed, how recently each was refreshed, and Brilliant Lady’s adapted frame, which is the only one able to transit the Panama Canal.
Which Virgin ship should I book?
Start with the itinerary, because the ships are so similar that the map is the real decision. If two sailings work equally well, choose on the restaurant that differs — Lucky Lotus on Scarlet, Ariya on Valiant, the original Razzle Dazzle on Resilient, Rojo on Brilliant — or on how recently the ship was refreshed. As of 2026 Valiant holds the newest interior, following her drydock.
What is a Lady Ship?
It is Virgin’s name for its own class, a play on “your ladyship” that nods to the group’s British heritage. All four were built by Fincantieri at Sestri Ponente near Genoa. Each carries a mermaid figurehead on the bow, and each has its own artwork, sculpture and decor despite the shared layout.
Why can only Brilliant Lady sail the Panama Canal?
Not because of the hull. All four ships have the same 38-metre beam, well inside the neo-Panamax lock limit. The problem on the first three is what overhangs the hull: outboard lifeboat davits and the Deck 7 aft overhang push their operational width past what the canal permits. Brilliant Lady was given a custom davit system that swings the lifeboats inboard for a transit, plus modified overhangs, which enabled Virgin’s first canal crossing in March 2026.
Are gratuities included on Virgin Voyages?
Not on bookings made from 7 October 2025. Virgin unbundled gratuities that day under its VoyageFair Choices fare structure. They are now charged separately at $20 per sailor per night if prepaid, or $22 per night if posted to your onboard account, at the same rate in every cabin category. Earlier bookings keep the older all-inclusive Legacy Fare.
Do all four Lady Ships have the same restaurants?
Five of the six sit-down rooms are shared: The Wake, Extra Virgin, Pink Agave, Gunbae and The Test Kitchen appear on every ship. The sixth room is the variable. Scarlet runs Lucky Lotus, which is Chinese; Valiant runs Ariya, which is Indian; Brilliant runs Rojo, which is Spanish; and Resilient still runs the original vegetable-forward Razzle Dazzle. None of them carry a cover charge.
