Brisbane: the ship isn’t in town
There’s no walk-off version of this port. The ship ties up at Luggage Point, a long way from the city — and the rest of this page follows from that.
The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) opened on 2 June 2022, and its first ship was Pacific Explorer, per the Queensland government’s opening statement.
The address is 1 Cruise Terminal Drive, Pinkenba, also called Luggage Point. The Port of Brisbane puts it about 12 km and 15 minutes from the airport, and about 21 km and 30 minutes from the CBD.
It’s out there for the ships, not for you. The port says Luggage Point is the only site in Brisbane that suits its larger ships — naturally deep water, room to turn one around, and none of the bridge height limits further upstream.
Public transport doesn’t reach it. The port’s page says the terminal isn’t currently serviced, so there’s no scheduled bus, train or CityCat to lean on. Its FAQs add that no shuttle buses run between the airport or the CBD and the terminal.
That leaves a taxi, a rideshare, a pre-booked coach or your line’s own transfer. The taxi rank and the rideshare pickup both sit about 120 m from the entrance along an undercover walkway, and the port asks you not to book a rideshare until you’re out of the building.
Con-x-ion, a private operator the port lists, sells an airport shuttle and a cruise-transfer service. We couldn’t find an official fare for any of it, and the price on its cruise page isn’t dated, so we’ve left it out. The Brisbane cruise guide has the airport run and the taxi arithmetic.
Before you plan anything, check the terminal’s name on your own paperwork.
Portside Wharf, at Hamilton on the river’s north shore, is the name older maps, hotel pages and transfer sites still attach to Brisbane cruising. The Port of Brisbane’s own pages name only Luggage Point — and that’s the one your ship will use.
We’ve read that Portside stopped taking cruise ships when BICT opened, but we couldn’t find a port page that says so or dates its last call. Treat that as unconfirmed, not settled. Use 1 Cruise Terminal Drive, and ask your line if anything tells you otherwise.
Once the transfer is done, the city side is the easy part.
South Bank Parklands is the usual first stop: about 15 hectares along the river with Streets Beach, a pool, and the Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, State Library and Queensland Museum close by, per the city’s visitor site. We couldn’t confirm entry prices or hours.
Work out the trip from the CBD on Translink’s journey planner the day before, and fix your return time before you leave the ship.
Australia Zoo and the Gold Coast are the two day trips people ask about.
Both are long days, and your ship already starts 30 minutes from the city centre. We haven’t priced or timed either from an official source — so we’re not repeating tour-operator figures here.
Add the drive out to Luggage Point and back to whatever the tour’s own running time is, and that total is the number to hold against all-aboard. Ask the operator what it does if the coach runs late.
The port’s own numbers for the last summer.
The Port of Brisbane counted the 2025/26 summer season as 1 October to 30 March: 101 ship calls, five of them maiden calls, and about 519,300 passenger movements. December was the busiest month, with 22 calls.
We couldn’t find 2026-27 numbers, so we won’t guess at the shape of the coming season. Your line’s itinerary is the only calendar that counts — check it.
We haven’t written a weather section, because we couldn’t source one we’d stand behind. Check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast the week you sail.
Our Brisbane shore excursion guide is where we work through the two day trips and the buffer around them.
From the gangway to the kerb
That’s a road distance. With no public transport serving the terminal, the ride is a car, a coach or a ship transfer.
Maps and transfer pages that predate it, or never caught up, may point you somewhere else. Trust the port’s address.
The port says it only opens on days a ship is at berth. There are no storage lockers either, so don’t plan on leaving a bag there.
The port’s FAQs say it plainly, and there’s no car rental on site either.
The walkway leads to the taxi rank and the rideshare pickup. Book the ride after you’ve walked out, not before.
The parklands, Streets Beach and the galleries sit on the river. Check entry and hours on the city’s visitor site before you build a day around them.
What’s in reach, and what isn’t
None of that is walkable from the ship, and every item sits past the 30-minute drive. South Bank is the city half of a ship day. Australia Zoo and the Gold Coast are long days built on the same transfer. Decide which kind of day you want before you book a ride.
Commonly reached from
Brisbane turns up on short Australian getaways and on South Pacific sailings. The two 2026-27 itineraries we could confirm from a line’s own pages are Royal Caribbean’s 8-night South Pacific sailing on Quantum of the Seas, listed for 22 October 2026, and Carnival’s three-day getaways on Carnival Luminosa. Others may sail from here, but we couldn’t confirm any. Some itineraries pair Brisbane with Sydney or run north to Cairns, so read your routing. For which tours earn the drive, see our Brisbane shore excursion guide; for the wider calendar, our Australia & New Zealand cruises guide.
Planning your Brisbane day
The picks themselves, meaning which paid tour is worth the money and which to skip, live in the dedicated guide. This page stays with the port and leaves the shopping to that one.
Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day, and when the ship’s own tour is still the better buy.
Best Brisbane shore excursions
The terminal is 21 km out at Luggage Point, so every tour starts with a 30-minute transfer. Here’s how we’d weigh the two day trips against that.

Money, and the exchange rate we used.
Everything’s priced in Australian dollars. Where we show US dollars, we converted at the ECB rate of 6 October 2026 (0.6982), so read them as rough.
Book the transfer before anything else.
Ask your line two things before you sail: whether it runs a shuttle into the city, and what time it expects you off the ship. The terminal doesn’t publish embarkation windows, and Carnival’s port page gives no boarding times.
Don’t land counting on an airport shuttle, because the port says there isn’t one. Book a transfer, or settle on the taxi, before you fly.
Match the terminal name before you pay for a ride.
Your boarding documents should say Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, 1 Cruise Terminal Drive, Pinkenba. Some hotel pages and transfer sites say Portside Wharf instead, and Con-x-ion’s cruise page uses Fishermans Island, a name the port doesn’t use.
South Bank is the easy half of the day.
The city’s visitor site describes about 15 hectares of green space, Streets Beach, and a cultural precinct with the art galleries, State Library and Queensland Museum. We didn’t confirm what any of it costs.
Plan the way back from the CBD to Luggage Point before you go in, not after.
Day trips need a buffer for two transfers.
We haven’t priced Australia Zoo or the Gold Coast, and we won’t repeat operator prices we can’t tie to an official source.
Ask each operator for its return time in writing, then subtract the 30-minute ride to the terminal and your line’s all-aboard.
Domestic sailings and the Coastal Trading Act.
Cruises that stay inside Australia run under a federal exemption from the Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Act 2012, which cuts licensing and paperwork for international cruise operators. The release we could read set its end date at 31 December 2026.
The minister’s site now lists a newer release on an updated cruise exemption. We couldn’t open it, so we don’t know the new terms. If you’re booking an Australia-only sailing well ahead, ask your line how the exemption affects it.
Sources, read October 6 and 7, 2026: the Port of Brisbane’s “Getting Here”, cruise FAQs and summer-season pages (portbris.com.au); the Queensland government’s opening statement of 2 June 2022 (statements.qld.gov.au); the city’s visitor site (visit.brisbane.qld.au); Con-x-ion’s own transfer pages; Royal Caribbean and Carnival Australia itinerary pages; and the Minister for Infrastructure’s releases on the cruise exemption (minister.infrastructure.gov.au). We couldn’t find an official fare for any transfer to the terminal, an official date for Portside Wharf’s last cruise call, or 2026-27 call numbers, so none of those is stated as fact.

Brisbane FAQ
Can I walk from the ship into Brisbane city?
No. The terminal at Pinkenba is about 21 km and 30 minutes by road from the CBD, and no public transport serves it.
Take a taxi, a rideshare, a pre-booked coach or your line’s shuttle, and decide which before you sail.
Is Portside Wharf still Brisbane's cruise terminal?
Not as far as the Port of Brisbane’s pages go. They name only the terminal at Luggage Point.
Some older maps, hotels and transfer sites still point at Portside Wharf in Hamilton. We couldn’t find a port page that dates its last cruise call, so we can’t give you a closing date. Use 1 Cruise Terminal Drive, Pinkenba, and ask your line if anything says otherwise.
Is there any public transport from the cruise terminal to the city?
No. The port’s website says the terminal isn’t serviced by public transport, so no scheduled bus, train or CityCat gets you there.
Your options are a taxi or rideshare from the pickup point, a pre-booked coach such as Con-x-ion’s, or your line’s own shuttle if it runs one.
Is Australia Zoo or the Gold Coast doable as a cruise excursion from Brisbane?
Both are sold as day tours, but we haven’t timed or priced either from an official source, so we can’t promise one fits your port day.
The terminal already sits 30 minutes from the city. Ask the operator when it expects to be back, and leave a real buffer before all-aboard.
How much does a taxi or shuttle cost from the cruise terminal to the CBD?
We couldn’t find an official fare. The port doesn’t publish one, and the price on Con-x-ion’s cruise page isn’t dated.
By our arithmetic from the Queensland meter tariff, a metered taxi from the CBD to the ship is about A$57 to A$64 (about US$40 to US$45). That’s an estimate, not a quote, so ask any booked operator for its price.
Does the Coastal Trading Act affect a Brisbane-based cruise?
Only in a general way, for sailings that stay inside Australia. The Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Act 2012 comes with a federal exemption for international cruise operators, which the government has extended before.
The release we could read ended it on 31 December 2026, and a newer update exists that we couldn’t open. For a far-future domestic booking, ask your line what it assumes.
What is there to do in Brisbane on a port day?
South Bank Parklands is the obvious start: about 15 hectares along the river, Streets Beach, and the galleries, State Library and Queensland Museum nearby, per the city’s visitor site.
None of it is reachable on foot from the ship, so budget the 30-minute transfer first, and check prices and opening hours before you go.
Why is the cruise terminal at Luggage Point and not in the city?
The Port of Brisbane says Luggage Point is the only site in Brisbane that suits its larger ships: naturally deep water, room to turn them around, and none of the bridge height limits further upstream. BICT opened there on 2 June 2022, and the Queensland government’s opening statement puts the build at A$177 million, completed in 2020.
