Cruise lines love a makeover announcement. Show us a café rendering, a suite with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a cocktail lounge that looks suspiciously nicer than our living room, and suddenly everyone is checking vacation days.
Holland America gave us plenty to look at on October 6. The line confirmed that Arcadia will move over from sister brand P&O Cruises in 2029, taking the fleet from 11 ships to 12 and adding room for more than 2,000 guests.
Before you start mentally unpacking in a newly renovated suite, keep one thing straight. An announced upgrade and a bookable upgrade are not the same thing. What you actually get comes down to the right ship and, more importantly, the right date.
Arcadia Is Coming Home
Arcadia isn’t a new build. She’s a Vista-class ship, the same design as Holland America’s Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam — and Holland America is the line that ordered her in the first place.
Her résumé is a little complicated. Holland America ordered her in 2000 as its fifth Vista-class ship. Cunard then claimed her as the planned Queen Victoria, and late in construction she was switched again, to P&O, debuting as Arcadia in 2005. Even cruise ships change career plans twice before their first day of work.
So 2029 is a homecoming, nearly three decades after Holland America first ordered her.
The same announcement had a twist. P&O isn’t just losing a ship — it’s getting Cunard’s Queen Anne, which only debuted in 2024.
So the ship that was almost Queen Victoria is leaving P&O to make room for an actual Queen. Even she doesn’t get to keep the title. Queen Anne will be renamed and refitted for P&O after her 2028–29 world voyage.
| Ship | Moving from | Moving to | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcadia | P&O Cruises | Holland America Line | 2029 |
| Queen Anne | Cunard | P&O Cruises | 2029 |
What we don’t know yet is the part you’d actually book. Holland America hasn’t announced Arcadia’s itineraries or her new venues, and says those details are coming over the next several months.
One more open question. Arcadia has sailed as an adults-only ship for P&O, and Holland America’s ships welcome families. How she’s run after the move is worth watching.
For now, Arcadia goes on your watch list. Leave the imaginary dinner reservations off your spreadsheet.
The Upgrade Timeline You Can Actually Plan Around
Arcadia got the headline. The more useful news was about Holland America Evolution, the line’s multiyear program to bring features from its newer Pinnacle-class ships to its midsize fleet.
Two dates are firm enough to plan around:
| Ship | Upgrades debut | What’s been announced |
|---|---|---|
| Oosterdam | Fall 2027 | Grand Dutch Café, renovated Ocean Bar, Bridgeview Suites, Solo Verandah cabins |
| Zuiderdam | April 2028 | Same announced features as Oosterdam |
| Arcadia | Before her 2029 debut | Not yet announced |
Those are real reasons to compare one future departure against another. They’re also exactly the kind of news that causes trouble.
Here’s how it usually goes. Someone reads about the new café, books the first sailing that looks good, and boards before the shipyard has touched the ship. They get the old café.

Will my sailing get the makeover?
Pick a ship and a month. The answer comes from the debut dates Holland America announced.
We’ll match the upgrade to an exact departure before you book.

Purpose-built Solo Verandah cabins deserve a real look if you travel alone and want your own balcony. They’re designed and priced for one person, which is meant to spare you the single supplement — the surcharge solo travelers often pay to have a cabin built for two all to themselves.
Still, a cabin labeled “solo” doesn’t automatically win. Compare the full price, the deck location and the square footage against the standard verandah cabins on the same sailing, including whatever single supplement Holland America is charging for those. Sometimes a regular cabin with a modest supplement is the better deal.
The category name gets a cabin onto your comparison list. The numbers decide whether it belongs on your booking.

Match the Upgrade to Your Sailing
If a new restaurant, lounge or suite is a big part of why you’re picking a ship, confirm it will be open on your exact sailing date. For this announcement, that means:
- Oosterdam: make sure your departure falls after the fall 2027 debut.
- Zuiderdam: check your date against April 2028.
- Arcadia: wait for her deployment and venue list. Don’t assume she gets everything announced for her sisters.
Keep future features separate from what’s on the ship today. A fleetwide renovation story can make it sound like every ship gets the new toys at once. Your boarding pass is a lot more specific.
My Take: Book the Cruise You’ll Actually Get
This announcement gives Holland America fans a lot to think about, especially solo travelers and anyone planning 2028 or later.
Start with the basics anyway. Pick the itinerary, the date and the cabin that fit your schedule. Then check which announced upgrades actually belong to that sailing.
A makeover is a good reason to take another look at a cruise line. Just check the debut date before you pick your sailing date.
