Holland America Vista Class: Four Old Ships and a Half-Billion-Dollar Bet

01

The fleet's workhorses, and its biggest investment

Zuiderdam (2002), Oosterdam (2003), Westerdam (2004) and Noordam (2006) are the largest group in the fleet by ship count and, for years, the quiet value play — same service, softer fares, prized for Alaska and scenic cruising. They are also the ships Holland America has just decided to spend serious money on.

Why a line spends half a billion on twenty-year-old ships

The obvious move for a mid-size ship approaching its third decade is a coat of paint and a quiet sale. Holland America went the other way. In April 2026 it announced Holland America Evolution — more than $500 million across six ships, the four Vista sisters and the two Signature ships, and the largest fleet update in the company's 153-year history.

Read that decision against the line's founding logic and it makes complete sense. As our Built to Solve piece argues, this is a company that treats the vessel as the means and the journey as the product. If the hull's job is to carry people well to places worth reaching, then a twenty-year-old hull that still does that job deserves investment rather than replacement. A line that believed the ship was the product would have ordered new tonnage instead.

There's a practical reason too. These ships are the fleet's scenic specialists — a generous space-to-guest ratio, wraparound teak promenades, and a size that fits harbors and inlets the giants cannot reach. Oosterdam's own history notes her wraparound teak decks and Azipod propulsion as part of what Holland America calls its perfectly-sized-ship philosophy. That capability is not something you can buy back later.

The through-line

When the ship is the product, an aging hull is a liability to be replaced. When the journey is the product, it's an asset worth half a billion dollars to keep sailing.

The Destination Ledger

Two ways of testing whether a line means what it says about destinations: how long its ships actually stay, and what it is willing to spend to keep them sailing. Vista Class scores well on both.

The Destination Ledger

Fourteen hours ashore, and a half-billion-dollar refit

Westerdam's fourteen hours beats Holland America's own flagship by an hour and Royal Caribbean's Ovation by five. But note the honest ceiling: Grand Princess and Norwegian Encore both post fourteen hours too. Vista Class is firmly in the top group for time ashore — it does not own that group outright, and any guide telling you otherwise is selling something.

Method, stated plainly so you can argue with it: every row is read directly off the July 2026 Skagway timetable published by cruisemapper.com. Nothing is averaged across months, and nothing is smoothed. Because a berth time answers to tide, weather and the shape of the individual itinerary, one month of one port is an indication of habit rather than a fixed rule. It is also the only port for which we found comparable published figures across every line — which is why the comparison lives here and not somewhere more flattering.

Every figure verified against Holland America's own press release of 14 April 2026. The detailed numbers published so far describe Oosterdam, which enters the program first in autumn 2027; the line has said the remaining five ships follow but has not yet released their dates or room counts. We have not assumed the other sisters get an identical package.

Source: Holland America Line press release, 14 April 2026. The two Bridgeview Suites are deliberately rare — 900 square feet each with 180-degree views and a wraparound balcony — so a bar that short is the honest picture rather than an error. The reimagined 1,550-square-foot Pinnacle Suite is not charted here because it is a rebuild of an existing room rather than an addition.

The four sisters

Four sisters, four years apart, and — despite near-identical specifications — four genuinely different jobs. The individual guides carry cabins, dining and our fit scores.

◆ Launched 2002 · First of the class

MS Zuiderdam

The original, and usually the value pick.
~82,000 GT~1,900 guests2002

The first Vista ship, and the one that established the format: a generous space ratio, wraparound teak promenades and a size that reaches harbors the big ships cannot. She has tended to carry the softer fares in the group and a taste for longer, less conventional routings — and she is confirmed for the Evolution program, with her date still to be announced.

Best for

Value-minded travelers who want the Holland America feel on the fleet's friendliest fares.

MS Oosterdam

The one they're rebuilding first.
~82,000 GT~1,900 guests2003Godmother: Princess Margriet of the Netherlands

Christened in Rotterdam in July 2003 by Princess Margriet — who has named five Holland America ships, more than anyone in the company's history — Oosterdam was chosen to lead the Evolution program. From autumn 2027 she gains 76 staterooms, 30 Solo Verandahs, 24 Vista Suites, two Bridgeview Suites, a reimagined 1,550-square-foot Pinnacle Suite and the Grand Dutch Café.

Best for

Travelers who want a genuinely modernized ship and are willing to sail after the refit completes.

◆ Launched 2004 · The Alaska worker

MS Westerdam

Fourteen hours alongside.
~82,000 GT~1,900 guests2004

On the published July 2026 Skagway schedule, Westerdam posts a fourteen-hour call — an hour longer than Holland America's own Pinnacle-class flagship, and five hours more than Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas. She is the sister most consistently associated with the Alaska season, which is exactly where that extra daylight is worth the most.

Best for

Alaska travelers who care more about hours ashore than about which year the ship was built.

◆ Launched 2006 · Youngest and widest-ranging

MS Noordam

The one that ranges furthest.
~82,000 GT~1,900 guests2006

The youngest of the four by two years, Noordam has built a reputation on port-dense international seasons — the sister most likely to be found working a Mediterranean or Northern Europe summer, or a longer international routing, rather than settling into a single home region. She is also confirmed for Evolution, date to be announced.

Best for

Travelers whose priority is a port-rich European or international map on a manageable mid-size ship.

07

Food and performance aboard

A shorter list than the newer ships carry, and — for the moment — no Tamarind. That changes for at least one of these ships in 2027.

Eating

Two specialty restaurants rather than five — the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and Canaletto, alongside the main Dining Room, Lido Market and Dive-In. Tamarind, the pan-Asian room, was introduced with the Signature ships and is not fitted here.

The Grand Dutch Café is coming — the European-styled all-day room, until now exclusive to Pinnacle Class, is part of the Evolution package, confirmed for Oosterdam from autumn 2027 and expected across the rest of the program.

Listening

Live music centers on the Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard rather than the newer ships' full Music Walk cluster — a lighter lineup, but the same principle of real musicians playing real sets each evening.

Entertainment Evolution reaches these ships too. Holland America's 2025 overhaul is fleetwide: the Vivace string ensemble, an expanded role for the Dam Band, revitalised production shows, and soloists chosen for wherever the ship actually is — folk guitar on the Alaska run, steel pan in the Caribbean.

08

The territory they work

Scenic cruising is the Vista ships' natural habitat, and it is the part of the trip no amount of onboard hardware can substitute for.

Forested headlands and a small wooded island in turquoise water on the Alaskan coast
Narrow, island-strewn coastal water — the working environment a mid-size hull was sized for, and the reason these ships are worth refitting rather than replacing.

Look at the scale of that channel and the argument for a mid-size ship makes itself — water like this is precisely where a 250,000-tonne hull cannot follow. A second frame was staged for a glacier day and has been dropped rather than padded out; one picture that proves the point is enough.

09

Are the Vista ships suited to you?

These ships suit you if you…

  • Want the Holland America experience at the fleet's friendliest fares
  • Care about scenic cruising — Alaska, fjords, narrow inlets and the Inside Passage
  • Value a generous space-to-guest ratio over the longest list of restaurants
  • Like a mid-size ship that reaches harbors the mega-ships cannot enter
  • Are happy to sail a well-kept older hull, especially one about to be modernized

Choose differently if you…

  • Want Tamarind or five specialty restaurants — that means Signature or Pinnacle Class
  • Want the freshest hull in the fleet regardless of fare
  • Are booking before autumn 2027 and specifically want post-Evolution rooms
  • Want the very longest voyages, which belong to the smaller R-class ships

Common queries

What are the Holland America Vista-class ships?

Zuiderdam (2002), Oosterdam (2003), Westerdam (2004) and Noordam (2006) — four mid-size ships of roughly 82,000 gross tons carrying about 1,900 guests at double occupancy. They are the largest group in the fleet by ship count.

What is Holland America Evolution and which ships get it?

Announced in April 2026, it is a program of more than $500 million across six ships — the four Vista-class vessels and the two Signature-class ships — described by the line as the largest fleet update in its 153-year history. Oosterdam goes first, debuting in autumn 2027.

What does the Evolution refit add to Oosterdam?

76 additional staterooms, including 30 Solo Verandahs with private balconies and a dedicated workspace, 24 Vista Suites (a category new to the class), and two 900-square-foot Bridgeview Suites with 180-degree views and wraparound balconies. The Pinnacle Suite is reimagined at 1,550 square feet, and the Grand Dutch Café arrives from Pinnacle Class.

Are the Vista ships good for Alaska?

Yes — they are among the fleet's scenic-cruising specialists, and on the published July 2026 Skagway schedule Westerdam posts a fourteen-hour call, an hour longer than Holland America's Pinnacle-class flagship. Their mid-size hulls also reach inlets the largest ships cannot.

Is Vista Class worth choosing over the newer Holland America ships?

If your priority is fare, scenic itineraries and space per guest, yes — these ships usually cost less and offer a more generous space ratio than the flagships. If you want Tamarind, five specialty restaurants or the World Stage theater, look at Signature or Pinnacle Class instead.
