Bottom line
On the published July 2026 Skagway schedule Westerdam lies alongside from 07:00 to 21:00 — fourteen hours, an hour longer than Holland America's own Pinnacle-class flagship and five more than Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas. She is the Vista sister most bound up with the Alaska season. The honest caveat is that fourteen hours puts her in the top group without putting her alone in it.
Is Westerdam your Alaska ship?
One question, scored against the published port schedule rather than the brochure.
Why Westerdam earns her Alaska season
Alaska rewards one thing above all others: being off the ship while the light holds. On the July 2026 Skagway schedule Westerdam is alongside from 07:00 to 21:00 — fourteen hours. Ovation of the Seas gets nine. Celebrity Edge and Star Princess get eleven. Anthem of the Seas, Coral Princess and Carnival Spirit each get thirteen, and so does Koningsdam, the line's own Pinnacle-class flagship, beaten by a ship twelve years its senior.
Now the part a less careful guide leaves out. Grand Princess, Emerald Princess, Royal Princess and Norwegian Encore all post fourteen hours in the same port in the same month. Westerdam ties them. She sits at the top of the range and does not own it, and Princess — the same parent company — reaches that figure routinely. Vista Class is a strong choice for time ashore. It is not an exclusive one, and any page telling you otherwise is selling something.
What she does hold within her own class is fit. About 82,000 tons and 1,900 guests is small enough for the narrow channels of the Inside Passage and large enough to stay steady in them, with a wraparound teak promenade for the long stretches when the scenery is the entertainment. That combination is why the Alaska season keeps returning to her rather than to a newer, larger hull.
A ship built to be the destination would spend those fourteen hours selling you something on board. Westerdam's answer is to open the gangway at seven in the morning and leave it open until nine at night.
Berths, and the tiers above them
Unremarkable in the best possible sense — rooms that hold your gear while the week happens outside them.
Ordinary cabins
The stateroom mix is verandah-weighted, which counts for more in Alaska than almost anywhere else. A private balcony in the Inside Passage is a viewing platform, not a nicety.
Interior and oceanview categories are the cheapest way onto a ship posting fourteen-hour calls, and on an itinerary this scenic the argument for spending the difference on a shore excursion instead is a serious one.
Trading up
Neptune Suites add the concierge Neptune Lounge and the higher service tier. There are no Vista Suites or Bridgeview Suites on this hull — those belong to Oosterdam from autumn 2027, and nothing equivalent has been announced here.
On a schedule this port-heavy the usual case for a suite weakens. You would be paying for hours in a room the itinerary is explicitly designed to keep you out of.
Galley and gigs
A short specialty list, arranged around a day that starts early and finishes late.
What is on the menu
Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto are the two specialty rooms, with the Dining Room, Lido Market and Dive-In covering everything else. On a fourteen-hour port day the Lido's opening hours matter considerably more than the reservation list does.
There is no Tamarind on this hull and no Grand Dutch Café. The café is confirmed for Oosterdam from autumn 2027 and remains undated everywhere else in the class.
What is on after dark
The Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard carry the evening. After a full day ashore the appetite for a late production show is genuinely lower, and the programming accepts that rather than fighting it.
Under the 2025 Entertainment Evolution refresh the soloist rotation is matched to the region — which on an Alaska sailing means folk guitar rather than a fixed touring set flown in from elsewhere.
The Alaska work
Westerdam's durable pattern is the Alaska summer — the Inside Passage, glacier viewing, and the Skagway call that gives this page its headline number. Port hours shift with sailing date, weather and the specific itinerary, so treat the July 2026 figure as a strong indication rather than a promise and confirm the schedule published for your own departure.

Warts and all
Where she wins
- Fourteen hours in Skagway on the published July 2026 schedule
- An hour longer alongside than Koningsdam, the line's Pinnacle-class flagship
- Mid-size hull suited to the Inside Passage and its narrower channels
- Verandah-weighted accommodation on the one itinerary where a balcony earns its price
Where she does not
- Fourteen hours is matched by Grand Princess, Emerald Princess, Royal Princess and Norwegian Encore — she ties, she does not lead
- Beaten inside her own fleet: Nieuw Amsterdam posts sixteen hours, Zaandam fifteen
- Two specialty restaurants, no Grand Dutch Café, and no announced refit date
- An Alaska-weighted deployment makes her a poor pick for a European or long-haul map
Popular questions
How long does Westerdam stay in Skagway?
Fourteen hours on the published July 2026 schedule — alongside from 07:00 to 21:00. Calls vary with sailing date, weather and itinerary, so confirm the times for your own departure rather than assuming the figure repeats.
Is Westerdam the best Holland America ship for time ashore in Alaska?
No, and we would rather say so. Nieuw Amsterdam posts sixteen hours in Skagway on the same July 2026 schedule and Zaandam posts fifteen. Westerdam's fourteen is excellent, and it is third within her own fleet.
Do any rival ships match Westerdam's fourteen hours?
Several. Grand Princess, Emerald Princess, Royal Princess and Norwegian Encore all show fourteen-hour Skagway calls in the same month. She is firmly in the top group without being alone in it.
Is Westerdam or Koningsdam better for Alaska?
For hours ashore, Westerdam by an hour on the July 2026 figures. For onboard depth, Koningsdam by a distance — five specialty restaurants and the full Music Walk against two restaurants and a lighter music lineup. Decide which of those your week is actually about.
Does Westerdam get the Evolution refit?
She is confirmed for the program but no date has been published. Oosterdam goes first, in autumn 2027, and the line has not released the schedule for the remaining five ships.
