The headline
Princess Margriet christened Oosterdam in Rotterdam on 29 July 2003, and in April 2026 Holland America named her the first of six ships into its Evolution program — 76 additional staterooms, a suite category this class has never carried, and the Grand Dutch Café, all arriving in autumn 2027. Every word of that is a promise about a future ship, not a description of the one sailing before then.
Is the wait worth it for you?
This ship turns on one variable, and it is not the ship.
Why Oosterdam went first
She was launched on 18 November 2002 and christened in Rotterdam on 29 July 2003 by Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, who has now named five ships for this company — more than any other person in its history. Oosterdam sits in the middle of that sequence. It is a detail that says a good deal about how seriously the line treats a naming ceremony and nothing whatsoever about how the ship handles.
The commercially serious fact is the April 2026 decision. Out of six vessels in Holland America Evolution — a spend of more than $500 million, described by the line as the largest fleet update across its 153-year history — Oosterdam was chosen to lead, in autumn 2027. She gains 76 staterooms with existing balcony accommodation left untouched, so these are net additions rather than a reshuffle: 30 Solo Verandahs with a private balcony and a dedicated workspace, 24 Vista Suites in a category this class has never had, and two Bridgeview Suites of 900 square feet each with 180-degree views and a wraparound balcony.
Two further items round out the package. The Pinnacle Suite is rebuilt at 1,550 square feet, making it the largest room in Vista Class, and the Grand Dutch Café comes down from the flagships where it had been exclusive. Read together, this is flagship money spent on a hull laid down in 2002 — which only makes sense if you regard the hull as a way of reaching somewhere worth reaching, rather than as the reason for the trip.
Thirty purpose-built single-occupancy cabins on a ship of this vintage is not a cosmetic decision. It is a wager that people will keep buying the journey, and that the vessel carrying them is worth rebuilding rather than replacing.
Accommodation, before and after autumn 2027
There are effectively two ships here: the one sailing before autumn 2027 and the one arriving after it. Be clear which you are booking.
Rooms as built
Before the yard period, her accommodation is the standard Vista layout her sisters carry — a verandah-weighted mix, restrained finishes, and the roomy circulation that follows from putting about 1,900 guests inside roughly 82,000 tons.
From autumn 2027 she adds 76 rooms outright. The 30 Solo Verandahs are the most interesting of them: a private balcony plus a proper desk, designed around one traveler, in place of the industry habit of charging a single guest for a double room.
Suites, and what 2027 adds
The refit introduces 24 Vista Suites with verandahs, a category that has not existed anywhere in this class, alongside two Bridgeview Suites of 900 square feet each with 180-degree ocean views and a balcony that wraps around the front.
The Pinnacle Suite is reimagined at 1,550 square feet — the largest accommodation in Vista Class once finished. Until then the suite tiers are the same Neptune-led arrangement found aboard Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam.
Kitchen and bandstand
The shortest specialty list in the fleet as things stand, on the only Vista ship with a published date for something better.
Restaurants aboard
As built she runs the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto beside the Dining Room, the Lido Market and the Dive-In. Two specialty rooms against five on the flagships is one of the reasons Vista fares sit where they do.
The Grand Dutch Café — Dutch pastries, coffee and an all-day room that had been restricted to Pinnacle Class — is confirmed for her from autumn 2027. She is the first ship in this class to be given a date for it.
Evenings
Nightly music runs through Billboard Onboard's dueling pianos and the Rolling Stone Lounge. There is no full Music Walk on this hull; the venues are fewer and the rooms smaller than on the newer ships.
The fleetwide Entertainment Evolution refresh of 2025 applies regardless of refit status — Vivace's strings, an enlarged role for the Dam Band, rebuilt production shows, and soloists chosen to suit the region she happens to be working.
The patch she works
The single genuinely fixed date on Oosterdam's calendar is the refit itself, in autumn 2027. Her sailing regions follow the usual Vista pattern of seasonal repositioning, which the line publishes season by season — so confirm the specific itinerary, and more importantly confirm whether your departure falls before or after the yard period.

A plain reading
The case for her
- First of six ships into a program worth more than $500 million
- 76 net-new rooms from autumn 2027, with existing balcony accommodation preserved
- 30 Solo Verandahs — real single-occupancy rooms rather than a supplement
- Christened by Princess Margriet, who has named five ships for the line
The case against
- Every advantage above arrives in autumn 2027 — sail before then and you get the un-refitted ship
- As built she has two specialty restaurants and no Grand Dutch Café
- A yard period of this scale can move, so bookings either side of it carry schedule risk
- Her three sisters are confirmed for the program with no dates published at all
Questions we get
What does the Evolution refit add to Oosterdam?
76 additional staterooms, with existing balcony accommodation preserved: 30 Solo Verandahs with a private balcony and dedicated workspace, 24 Vista Suites with verandahs in a category new to the class, and two Bridgeview Suites of 900 square feet each with 180-degree views and wraparound balconies. The Pinnacle Suite is rebuilt at 1,550 square feet and the Grand Dutch Café arrives from Pinnacle Class.
When does Oosterdam's refit take place?
Autumn 2027. She is the first of six ships in Holland America Evolution, announced in April 2026 as a spend of more than $500 million across the four Vista ships and the two Signature ships. Dates for the remaining five have not been released.
Who christened Oosterdam?
Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, in Rotterdam on 29 July 2003, following the ship's launch on 18 November 2002. She has named five Holland America ships in total, more than anyone else in the company's history.
Should I book Oosterdam before the refit?
Only if the itinerary and the fare stand up on their own. Before autumn 2027 she is a well-kept 2002-built ship with two specialty restaurants and none of the announced rooms or venues aboard. Booking early in the expectation of the new hardware means paying for something that does not yet exist.
What are Oosterdam's tonnage and guest capacity?
Roughly 82,000 gross tons and about 1,900 guests at double occupancy, matching her three sisters. The refit adds rooms without turning her into a different size of ship.
