MS Zuiderdam: The First Vista Ship, and the Fleet's Softest Fare

← Back to the Vista Class guide

01

Start here

Zuiderdam opened Vista Class in 2002 and has spent the quarter-century since doing the least glamorous and most useful job in the fleet — carrying the full Holland America experience at the lowest realiztic price, on maps that run longer and less predictably than her sisters'. She is confirmed for the Evolution program; her date has not been published.

Why Zuiderdam, and why she costs less

Every class has a first hull, and the first hull gets built before anyone knows precisely what the passengers will ask for. Zuiderdam arrived in 2002 as Holland America's working answer to an unsettled question — how large a ship can grow before it stops being able to reach the places that justify the journey. The answer she established, roughly 82,000 gross tons and about 1,900 guests, has held ever since.

That figure flatters her in a way nobody advertises. Divide the tonnage by the guest count and Zuiderdam hands each passenger about 43 gross tons of ship — more elbow room than the Pinnacle-class flagships manage at roughly 37.5, and more than the smaller R-class hulls at about 42.6. The oldest ship in her class is, on the arithmetic, among the least pressed in the fleet.

Her second advantage shows up on the invoice. A twenty-year-old hull with two specialty restaurants and no Grand Dutch Café prices accordingly, and she has become the sister a value-minded traveler books when the coastline, not the carpet, is the point. She sits on the Evolution list and the line has not said when her turn comes. Book the ship as she is today, and treat any future yard period as a bonus you did not pay for.

Reading her against the thesis

A company that sold the vessel as the product would have quietly retired its 2002 prototype. Holland America put her on a half-billion-dollar list instead, and kept her fares low enough that the itinerary stays the reason anyone books.

04

Your room aboard the first Vista ship

Plain, well-kept and unusually generous with square footage — the accommodation Vista Class was drawn around, in its original form.

Standard accommodation

The stateroom mix leans heavily on verandahs and oceanview rooms, finished in the restrained palette the line has kept for decades. Nothing aboard is trying to impress you; the color scheme exists so that the window does the work.

Because roughly 1,900 guests sit inside 82,000 tons, the corridors, the wraparound teak promenade and the public rooms all feel less crowded than the equivalents on the larger flagships. On this ship the space itself is the amenity you are buying.

If you spend more

Neptune Suites bring the concierge Neptune Lounge and the additional service layer, in the pre-Evolution configuration. There are no Vista Suites or Bridgeview Suites aboard, and none have been announced for her.

Club Orange is sold fleet-wide as a per-person daily upgrade rather than built in as a room. On a ship priced like this one, it is often the cheapest route to a higher tier without moving up a fare class.

05

Meals, and what plays afterwards

Two specialty rooms rather than five — and on Zuiderdam that shortfall is part of the pricing, not an oversight.

Meals aboard

The Pinnacle Grill handles steak and the serious evening; Canaletto handles Italian. Beyond those two, the main Dining Room, the Lido Market and the poolside Dive-In carry the week. Tamarind, the pan-Asian room introduced with the Signature ships, was never fitted to this hull.

The Grand Dutch Café is not aboard either. It forms part of the Evolution package, and the only Vista ship with a published date for it is Oosterdam, from autumn 2027.

Sets and shows

Evenings run through the Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard rather than the flagships' full Music Walk cluster — fewer venues, the same insistence on live musicians instead of a playlist.

The 2025 Entertainment Evolution overhaul was fleetwide, so the Vivace string ensemble, the enlarged Dam Band and the rebuilt production shows reach her too. Soloists are booked to match whichever region the ship is working.

06

The routes she draws

Zuiderdam's habit runs longer and less orthodox than her sisters' — sailings that push past the standard week, on maps that decline to repeat the obvious circuit. Treat that as a durable tendency rather than a guarantee, and confirm the itinerary published for your own departure date.

No spin

Reasons to book her

  • Usually the friendliest fare attached to a Holland America ship
  • About 43 gross tons of ship per guest — more room than the flagships give you
  • Longer, less predictable routings than the standard seven-night circuit
  • A wraparound teak promenade and a hull sized for harbors the giants skip

Reasons to hesitate

  • Two specialty restaurants against five on Pinnacle Class
  • No published Evolution date, so book strictly on what exists aboard today
  • The oldest hull in the class, and it tells in the fittings rather than the service
  • No Grand Dutch Café, no Tamarind, no World Stage theater
08

Asked often

Why is Zuiderdam usually cheaper than other Holland America ships?

She is the oldest hull in Vista Class and carries a shorter venue list — two specialty restaurants rather than five, and no Grand Dutch Café. The crew ratio, the service and the space per guest are not discounted alongside the fare, which is what makes her the value pick rather than merely the cheap one.

When does Zuiderdam get the Evolution refit?

Holland America has confirmed all four Vista ships for the program but published a date for Oosterdam only, which goes first in autumn 2027. Zuiderdam's slot has not been announced, so book her on what she offers as built.

How much space does Zuiderdam give each guest?

Roughly 43 gross tons per guest at double occupancy, working from about 82,000 tons and about 1,900 guests. That is more generous than the Pinnacle-class flagships at around 37.5 and more than the R-class ships at around 42.6.

Is Zuiderdam a sensible first Holland America ship?

For a traveler testing whether the line's destination-first approach suits them, yes — she delivers the service and the itinerary philosophy at the lowest entry price in the fleet. What she will not show you is modernized hardware.

What are Zuiderdam's tonnage and guest capacity?

About 82,000 gross tons and roughly 1,900 guests at double occupancy — the standard Vista-class figures across all four sisters.
