They are also the two ships the company hands its longest, hardest and most extraordinary itineraries to. That is not a coincidence. It is the whole argument.

The clearest proof the thesis is real

If a cruise line believed the ship was the product, its flagship would get the flagship itinerary. The newest, largest, most photogenic vessel would carry the most prestigious voyage, because that is where the marketing value sits.

Holland America does the opposite, and does it explicitly. Its 2027 Grand World Voyage — 129 days, 53 ports, 28 countries, six continents — is assigned to Volendam, a ship delivered in 1999. The Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage — 70 days, 31 ports, two Drake Passage crossings and a four-day Antarctic experience — goes to Zaandam, delivered in 2000. The two oldest, smallest hulls in the fleet carry the two most ambitious journeys the company sells.

That only makes sense if you accept the premise our Built to Solve piece sets out: the destination is the product, and the ship is the serious way you get there. A smaller hull reaches ports the giants cannot enter, carries fewer people through fragile places, and can be away for four months without stranding a revenue-critical asset. Volendam has form here — in 2016 she carried a solar-eclipse viewing cruise through Indonesia's Makassar Strait, positioning a ship in open water for a few minutes of totality.

Zaandam posts fifteen hours — second longest across the whole Holland America table, and two hours more than the Pinnacle-class flagship. A ship delivered in 2000 spends more of the day alongside than the one delivered in 2016. Against Royal Caribbean's Ovation the gap is six hours, most of an Alaskan working day.

Two caveats this table deserves. The first is scope: it is one month at one port, taken from the July 2026 Skagway timetable published by cruisemapper.com, and berth times answer to weather and to each sailing's own shape. The second is coverage: Volendam simply does not appear in that month's listings, so Zaandam stands in for the class rather than joining her. Nothing has been inferred on Volendam's behalf from her sister's figure, because a ship on a four-month world voyage keeps a different kind of schedule entirely.

One caveat worth stating plainly: our own philosophy piece cites a 133-day Grand World Voyage, which was a different year's edition — the 2027 sailing is 129 days. Treat the length as a durable pattern in the 125-to-135-day range rather than a fixed number, and confirm the current year's itinerary before booking.

Her record is unusually well traveled even by this fleet's standards: the largest ship of her day to pass beneath Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge in 2002, Australian circumnavigations from 2009, Alaska from Vancouver from 2012, years of Asian deployment, and a 2016 solar-eclipse voyage through Indonesia's Makassar Strait.

What happens aboard, night after night

Fewer venues than anywhere else in the fleet — which, on a voyage measured in months, turns out to matter less than you would think.

The dining room

A short, well-run list — the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse and Canaletto alongside the main Dining Room, Lido Market and Dive-In. There is no Tamarind here and no Grand Dutch Café; these are the fleet's most modest dining rosters.

On a long voyage the calculation changes. Over 129 days the ship's provisioning follows the route — fresh fish and produce brought aboard in port — and the restaurant count matters less than variety arriving over the gangway. It is the clearest case anywhere in the fleet of the itinerary shaping the menu rather than the reverse.

The evenings

Live music, lightly staffed but constant — the emphasis falls on real musicians in intimate rooms rather than the newer ships' full Music Walk cluster, which suits a passenger list settling in for weeks rather than days.

Entertainment Evolution reaches here too. Zaandam was named among the first ships to receive Holland America's 2025 entertainment overhaul — the Vivace string ensemble, an expanded Dam Band, revitalised productions, and regionally chosen soloists. On a world voyage that regional rotation has more material to work with than anywhere else in the fleet.

How far these two actually go

These two go places the rest of the industry does not send ships — which is the entire reason to be interested in them.
