Chris Evert christened Volendam in 1999. Fincantieri built her at Marghera, in Venice, and at 60,906 gross tons for 1,432 guests she is one of the two smallest ships Holland America runs. She has since been given the longest single itinerary the company sells.
Her logbook is most of the argument. In 2002 she became the largest ship of the day to pass beneath Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge on an Orient sailing. In 2009 she opened the line's Australian market, circumnavigations included. From 2012 she worked the Inside Passage out of Vancouver, and across 2013 to 2016 she spent long seasons in Asia. Then, in 2016, she carried a solar-eclipse viewing cruise through Indonesia's Makassar Strait — an entire ship repositioned so that a passenger list could stand on deck beneath a shadow lasting a few minutes. It is difficult to think of a plainer statement of what this company thinks it is selling.
In 2022 Volendam served as shelter in Rotterdam for people displaced from Ukraine. We record it because it is part of what this hull has been used for, not because it belongs in a sales argument.

The premium tiers aboard are the thinnest in the fleet. Club Orange is sold as a paid upgrade as it is everywhere else, but there is no dedicated Club Orange dining room on this ship and nothing approaching the suite arrangements on the newer classes.
That is a straight deduction and we will not soften it. If a large suite and a private lounge are central to your idea of a good trip, the Signature and Pinnacle ships do that job better. Volendam's case rests entirely on the route.

Provisioning and dining
The list runs to the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto alongside the main Dining Room, the Lido Market and Dive-In. Tamarind is not fitted to this class and neither is the Grand Dutch Café; both live on larger, newer hulls.
Across a 129-day routing, provisioning does more work than the venue count — produce and fish come aboard as the ship goes, so variety arrives over the gangway rather than from an extra restaurant. Book a two-week segment and compare ships on menus alone, though, and the flagships win that comparison outright.
Nightly entertainment
Evenings run on live musicians in small rooms rather than the Music Walk cluster the newer classes carry. For a passenger list settling in for weeks, knowing the band is part of the appeal rather than a consolation.
