MS Zaandam: Antarctica on a Hull Built in 2000

01

The gist

Zaandam was delivered in 2000, measures about 61,000 gross tons and carries roughly 1,432 guests. Two things about her are worth knowing. She holds the 2027 Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage — 70 days, 31 ports, 13 countries, a Panama Canal transit, the Chilean fjords, two Drake Passage crossings and a four-day Antarctic experience. And on the published July 2026 Skagway schedule she is alongside fifteen hours, second longest in the fleet, two more than the flagship delivered in 2016.

03

Why a ship from 2000 is sent to the ice

On paper Zaandam ought to be the least interesting vessel in this fleet — a hull from 2000, about 61,000 gross tons, roughly 1,432 guests, no purpose-built showpiece anywhere aboard. She is instead carrying one of the two most ambitious voyages Holland America has published for 2027.

That voyage is the Grand South America & Antarctica: 70 days, 31 ports, 13 countries, departing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale on 3 January 2027. The routing takes in a Panama Canal transit, the Chilean fjords, two crossings of the Drake Passage and four days of Antarctic scenic cruising, plus Mariners' Collection calls sold only on Grand Voyages. Ice and fjords reward a smaller hull; so do most of the harbors on the way south.

The second thing she does is beat much younger ships at their own game. The published July 2026 Skagway schedule has her alongside from 06:00 to 21:00 — fifteen hours, behind only Nieuw Amsterdam across the whole fleet, and two hours ahead of the Pinnacle-class flagship delivered in 2016. She was also named among the first ships to receive Holland America's 2025 Entertainment Evolution, which is not where a line normally spends on its oldest tonnage.

Placing her inside the argument

A ship from 2000 stays alongside two hours longer than a ship from 2016, and gets handed Antarctica while the flagship works the Caribbean. If you wanted one page of evidence that this company sells the route rather than the vessel, it is this one.

04

Accommodation aboard Zaandam

Accommodation of a 2000 vintage on a small hull. Setting expectations honestly matters more here than on any other ship in the fleet.

Standard rooms

The cabins are of their era — sensible, solid, unremarkable, and drawn from a narrower range of layouts than the newer classes offer. None of it is a reason to book her, and on an Antarctic routing none of it is a reason not to.

With about 1,432 guests aboard she is quiet in a way the bigger classes cannot manage. On days of scenic cruising at the ice that translates into something concrete: more rail per passenger, and fewer people standing between you and the view.

Suite categories

Premium categories here are limited and there is no purpose-built Club Orange restaurant. The upgrade is sold across the fleet as an arrangement rather than as a room, and on this ship that distinction is worth understanding before you pay for it.

On a 70-day southern routing the useful question is not which suite but which side and which deck. Ask an advisor to read the itinerary before you choose a category — on this voyage the schedule of what passes the window does more for the trip than square footage does.

Dining, and what fills the evenings

A short list of rooms, and a long time in which to get to know them.

Where meals happen

Meals run through the main Dining Room, the Lido Market and Dive-In, with the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto as the specialty options. Tamarind and the Grand Dutch Café are not fitted to this class, and the Evolution refit program covers the Vista and Signature ships rather than these two.

Over seventy days the kitchen's raw materials change with the route, which does more for variety than another venue would. On a seven-night Alaska sailing, though, a Signature or Pinnacle ship simply offers more choice. That is the trade, stated plainly.

After dark

Zaandam was named among the first ships to receive the 2025 Entertainment Evolution — the Vivace string ensemble, a larger role for the Dam Band, revitalised production shows, and soloists chosen to match the region being sailed.

The venue count remains genuinely thin against the newer classes: no Music Walk cluster, no large-format theater. What is aboard is live and small in scale, which suits a passenger list with weeks to fill rather than nights.

Two itineraries that could not be less alike

Two very different assignments define her: the 2027 Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage, leaving Fort Lauderdale on 3 January 2027, and Alaska seasons in which she posts one of the longest published calls in the fleet. Deployments are set year by year and port hours move with each sailing — verify both against the departure you are looking at.

No spin

The case for her

  • Carries a 70-day Antarctic and South American routing no larger ship in this fleet attempts
  • Fifteen hours at Skagway on the published schedule, two more than the 2016 flagship posts
  • About 1,432 guests, which is the right scale for ice, fjords and small harbors
  • Named among the first ships to receive the 2025 Entertainment Evolution

The case against

  • A hull from 2000, sharing the oldest interiors in the fleet with her sister
  • The thinnest venue list Holland America operates — no Tamarind, no Music Walk cluster, no big theater
  • Not included in the Evolution refit program, which covers the Vista and Signature ships only
  • We could not verify who christened her, so we have left the godmother question blank rather than guess at a name

Questions answered

What is Zaandam's 2027 Antarctic voyage?

The Grand South America and Antarctica Voyage: 70 days, 31 ports and 13 countries, departing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale on 3 January 2027. It includes a Panama Canal transit, the Chilean fjords, two Drake Passage crossings, a four-day Antarctic experience, and Mariners' Collection ports sold only on Grand Voyages.

How long does Zaandam stay in Skagway?

From 06:00 to 21:00 on the published July 2026 schedule — fifteen hours, second longest of any Holland America ship listed there, and two hours more than the Pinnacle-class flagship. Port times vary by sailing, so confirm yours.

How old and how big is Zaandam?

She was delivered in 2000, measures roughly 61,000 gross tons and carries about 1,432 guests at double occupancy — making her, with Volendam, one of the two smallest ships in the fleet.

Who is Zaandam's godmother?

We have not been able to verify who christened Zaandam, so we have left the question open rather than publish a name we cannot stand behind. Her sister's is documented: Chris Evert christened Volendam in 1999.

Is Zaandam part of the Evolution refit?

No. Holland America Evolution covers six ships — the four Vista-class and the two Signature-class vessels. Zaandam is outside it. She was, however, named among the first ships to receive the 2025 Entertainment Evolution changes to music and production shows.
