Why Koningsdam, specifically
Koningsdam's job was never to be the biggest thing in the harbor. It introduced the light-filled, music-themed design language that defines Pinnacle Class — Music Walk, grouping B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard's dueling pianos into one deliberate entertainment run — and then Holland America pointed that ship straight at Alaska, where the destination-first thesis actually pays off.
That's not incidental. A ship this size, this new, gives Holland America the capacity to run a serious Alaska season and still connect passengers, at the pier, to the McKinley Explorer's glass-domed railcars and the Denali Lodge — infrastructure the line owns rather than rents. Named for King Willem-Alexander (Koningsdam translates roughly to "King's dam"), she was christened by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in 2016 — a fittingly formal start for the ship that would go on to define an entire class.
