MS Koningsdam: The Ship Alaska Was Waiting For

← Back to the Pinnacle Class guide

01

The short version

Koningsdam is the ship that introduced Pinnacle Class in 2016, and a decade on it's still the class's clearest Alaska specialist — a heavy summer season, a direct hand-off at the pier to Holland America's own Denali cruisetour infrastructure, and the original, fullest version of Music Walk.

03

Why Koningsdam, specifically

Koningsdam's job was never to be the biggest thing in the harbor. It introduced the light-filled, music-themed design language that defines Pinnacle Class — Music Walk, grouping B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard's dueling pianos into one deliberate entertainment run — and then Holland America pointed that ship straight at Alaska, where the destination-first thesis actually pays off.

That's not incidental. A ship this size, this new, gives Holland America the capacity to run a serious Alaska season and still connect passengers, at the pier, to the McKinley Explorer's glass-domed railcars and the Denali Lodge — infrastructure the line owns rather than rents. Koningsdam is the piece of that machine that floats.

Named for King Willem-Alexander (Koningsdam translates roughly to "King's dam"), she was christened by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in 2016 — a fittingly formal start for the ship that would go on to define an entire class.

Where she fits in Built to Solve

In the Built to Solve piece on this line, the balance-sheet proof of "destination over ship" is that Holland America buys railcars, not waterslides. Koningsdam is the ship where that trade actually gets used, season after season.

Rooms aboard Koningsdam

Comfortable and classic rather than flashy — the Pinnacle-class stateroom template, on the ship where it debuted.

The rooms

Staterooms carry the fleet's usual high proportion of verandahs, fresh flowers, and the calm, uncluttered feel that defines Holland America over flashier competitors.

Family oceanview staterooms are available, part of the class's original push to make Pinnacle ships slightly more workable for multigenerational groups than the older Vista and R-class ships.

Stepping up

Neptune and Pinnacle suites add the concierge Neptune Lounge and extra amenities — a quieter, more personal layer rather than a ship-within-a-ship.

Club Orange is available fleet-wide as a per-person daily upgrade on Koningsdam, though it doesn't have a dedicated restaurant built in the way Nieuw Statendam's does — it shares space rather than owning it outright.

05

At the table, and after dinner

The fullest specialty-dining roster in the fleet, anchored by the original run of Music Walk.

At the table

Five specialty restaurants: the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, Canaletto (Italian), Tamarind (pan-Asian), Rudi's Sel de Mer (French seafood) and Nami Sushi, alongside the Dining Room, Lido Market, Dive-In and the Grand Dutch Café.

America's Test Kitchen cooking demonstrations run as part of the line's broader enrichment focus — food as something to learn about, not just eat.

After dinner

Koningsdam carries the original Music Walk lineup — B.B. King's Blues Club, Billboard Onboard, the Rolling Stone Lounge — plus the 270-degree World Stage LED theater.

Entertainment Evolution layers a regional soloist program on top: expect folk guitar sets specifically on Alaska sailings, reflecting where the ship actually is rather than a fixed script.

06

Her Alaska season

Koningsdam's clearest, most habitual assignment is a summer Alaska season — Glacier Bay, the Inside Passage, and cruisetour connections into Denali. She also picks up Caribbean and Mexico sailings outside that window.

Straight talk

What she does well

  • The deepest, most habitual Alaska season in the class
  • The original, fullest version of Music Walk
  • Direct connection to Holland America's owned Denali cruisetour infrastructure
  • Five specialty restaurants and a genuinely strong enrichment program

Where she falls short

  • No dedicated Club Orange restaurant — that's Nieuw Statendam
  • No longer the freshest hull in the class — Rotterdam took that title in 2021
  • Traditional, adult-skewing atmosphere; light on big-kid activity versus mass-market lines
08

Common questions

Is Koningsdam a good ship for Alaska?

Yes — it's Holland America's clearest Alaska specialist within Pinnacle Class, with a heavy summer season and a direct pier-side connection to the line's owned Denali cruisetour infrastructure (the McKinley Explorer railcars and the Denali Lodge).

Who is Koningsdam's godmother?

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands christened Koningsdam in 2016.

Is Koningsdam or Nieuw Statendam better?

Koningsdam leans harder into Alaska and carries the original Music Walk lineup. Nieuw Statendam adds a 150-plus-artist art collection and a dedicated Club Orange restaurant. Neither is objectively better — it depends on whether Alaska or the art-and-Club-Orange combination matters more to you.

What is Koningsdam's tonnage and guest capacity?

Koningsdam measures roughly 99,500 gross tons and carries about 2,650 guests at double occupancy.
