The Montréal desks that are open when you walk off the ship
The opening hour is what decides this morning. A cheaper rate at a desk that hasn’t opened is no help.
Walking off on a weekday morning, you have choices. Most downtown desks are open by 8, and Avis on Metcalfe and at Complexe Desjardins by 7. Sunday is another matter, with three desks closed all day, four shut by 2 PM and Metcalfe on its own.
| Desk | Opens Mon–Fri | Opens Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avis · Budget, Metcalfe Street | 7 AM | 7 AM | 8 AM to 6 PM |
| Avis · Budget, Complexe Desjardins | 7 AM | 8 AM | 9 AM to 1 PM |
| Enterprise, rue Guy | 7:30 AM | 8 AM | 10 AM to 2 PM |
| Hertz, Palais des Congrès | 8 AM | 8 AM | Closed |
| Enterprise, bus station (Berri) | 8 AM | 9 AM | Closed |
| YUL counters, P4 lot | 7 AM | 7 AM | 7 AM to 1 AM |
Six of the desks, from each company’s own location page, read Oct 3, 2026; National and Alamo on Stanley Street print no opening hours, so they’re left off. Checked Oct 3, 2026
Disembarkation usually runs by luggage tag or deck — an early-docking ship doesn’t mean an early walk-off for you.
Pick the desk for the hour your line gives you, not the hour the ship arrives.
From the quay, every desk on that list is a short cab ride — the hub’s desk cards give each one’s distance.
Saturday is mostly fine until midday. Hertz shuts at 3 and the bus-station Enterprise at noon, so a late walk-off narrows the field fast.
Avis on Metcalfe: the Montréal counter for a Sunday and for after hours
One Montréal desk keeps cruise-friendly hours seven days a week. It’s 1225 rue Metcalfe, at Sainte-Catherine.
Avis’s instruction for the Metcalfe key drop is short: park and lock the car, then put the completed contract and the keys in the box.
That’s the desk to plan around on a Sunday — every other downtown counter with published hours is shut by 2 PM, or never opens.
The key drop covers the other end of the trip as well — a car brought back late on any night can go in the box, not back to YUL.
Read the fine print on the drop box before you rely on one elsewhere.
Avis at Complexe Desjardins says the car must come back during office hours, and if a drop box is used you stay responsible until the contract closes the next business day.
Enterprise’s downtown pages say after-hours returns aren’t available at all — the car goes back while someone is at the desk.
National and Alamo on Stanley publish a drop-box window and nothing else. Opening hours not printed; Alamo’s after-hours drop box runs Mon–Thu from 7 PM, Fri from 9 PM, Sat from 5 PM, Sun from 6 PM — phone before you plan a pick-up there.
Burlington, Boston and New York by car from the Grand Quay
Boston and New York are each one long day from the quay. The drive is long; the paperwork is what slows it down.
| From the Grand Quay to | Distance and time, our routing |
|---|---|
| The Lacolle crossing, into New York | 40.0 mi · 56 min |
| Burlington, Vermont | 92.0 mi · 2 hr 02 min |
| Boston | 307.3 mi · 6 hr 14 min |
| New York City | 366.8 mi · 7 hr 27 min |

The rental, line by line
Canadian dollars, our arithmetic, and only useful if your rental company allows a one-way into the US — no Montréal page we read describes one, so the drop box starts at zero for your quote’s figure. GST and QST are on the rental. Fuel assumes 30 mpg at a Montréal forecast price for the whole drive; US gas will differ. US tolls and the border wait aren’t included.
At an assumed C$55, the New York day comes to about C$161 before any drop charge, US tolls or border wait, our arithmetic.
Boston’s drive burns about C$82 of fuel on the same assumptions.
The catch is the return.
Every brand’s Canadian terms we read let the car cross into the US — none describes leaving it there, so ask before you book a one-way south.
Avis lists Burlington airport (BTV, open 7 AM to 12:15 AM daily) and Plattsburgh airport (PBG, 9 to 7) in its Montréal-area list. They’re US desks, so they help when you reach the US side some other way and collect a car there — not as a drop point for a Montréal car, which no page we read describes.
A round trip is the safe pattern. Drive to Vermont for a day or two, then bring the car back to Montréal.
What the border at Lacolle asks of a Montréal rental-car driver
The paperwork question comes before the car question. The officer at the booth will ask for it either way.
To get back into the US by land, US citizens show a passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card; children under 16 may show a birth certificate.
Canada lets US citizens in on proof of identity and citizenship (a passport, a birth certificate with photo ID, or an enhanced licence), plus a consent letter for a child travelling without both parents; plan around the stricter US rule.
Pack for the US rule — it’s the one you’ll meet on the way home.
A plain driver’s licence won’t do on its own.
Cannabis is legal in Canada, but carrying it across the border either way is a serious criminal offence. That includes anything bought legally in Montréal — leave it there.
The CBSA says leave firearms and weapons at home.
The CBSA says early mornings are the best time to cross. Leave the quay early, not after a long lunch in Old Montréal, if the border is on the day’s route.
Taking a Montréal rental into Vermont or New York: what the contracts allow
Crossing with the car is allowed by every brand we read. Leaving the car on the other side is not something any Montréal page we read describes.
Every Enterprise, National and Alamo Montréal page we read says cars rented in Canada can be driven throughout Canada and the US, not Mexico; Avis says “Canadian vehicles may be driven into the U.S.” (cross-border questions: 1-800-879-2847).
Hertz’s terms for its YUL desk allow the US but ask you to carry the rental agreement and get a pass from the border guard at entry (Hertz’s wording; we couldn’t match it to a US border rule). Hertz’s Canadian terms also ask you to tell the counter you’re crossing, so say it when you collect the car.
Most Enterprise cars rented in the US can go into Canada (not exotics or large vans); Avis lets certain US cars in by arrangement, with a Non-Resident Insurance Card, and does US-to-Canada one-ways only at select border-area locations; Thrifty says a US licence holder can “in most cases” drive into Canada.
Sixt doesn’t allow one-way rentals from the US to Canada.
Driving across and back is broadly allowed, as far as these pages go. A one-way across is the part to get in writing, from the brand, before you pay.
Leaving Montréal for home without a rental
The car isn’t the only way south. For one or two people with bags, it’s often not the easiest.
Amtrak’s Adirondack runs daily from New York’s Moynihan Train Hall to Montréal’s Central Station, in about 10 hours per Amtrak or about 11 per Tourisme Montréal.
That’s a long day on rails, not a quick hop — it starts downtown and ends in Manhattan, with nobody at the wheel.
YUL has US preclearance for flights to the United States, so you clear US border checks before you board, not after you land.
For the ride from the quay to YUL, the airport page prices the flat-fare cab and the bus.
Book the Montréal dock-day desk by its opening hour
Book the pick-up for an hour after your line’s likely walk-off time, at a desk that will be open then.
On a Sunday that narrows to Metcalfe or YUL. If the car is crossing the border, say so at the counter and keep the contract in the glovebox.
- Search opens on YUL
- Check cross-border rules before paying
- Taxes and fees shown before you pay
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
After a Montréal cruise: rental questions
Which car rental in Montréal is open on Sunday?
Downtown, Avis and Budget on Metcalfe Street are the only counter we found open past 2 PM on a Sunday, 8 AM to 6 PM. Complexe Desjardins and Central Station open 9 to 1, Enterprise on rue Guy 10 to 2, and YUL’s counters 7 AM to 1 AM.
Can you drive a Canadian rental car into the United States?
Generally yes. Enterprise, National and Alamo’s Montréal pages allow the US but not Mexico, and Avis says Canadian vehicles may be driven into the US. Hertz’s terms ask you to carry the rental agreement and get a pass from the border officer, wording we couldn’t match to a US rule.
How far is Montréal from Burlington, Vermont?
About 92 miles and 2 hr 02 min from the Grand Quay on free-flow routing, our estimate, before any wait at the border.
How long is the drive from Montréal to Boston?
About 307 miles and 6 hr 14 min from the Grand Quay on free-flow routing, our estimate, with no stops, traffic or border wait included.
What ID do you need to drive back into the US from Montréal?
A US passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. Children under 16 may show a birth certificate.
Can you return a rental car after hours in downtown Montréal?
At Avis on Metcalfe, which has a 24-hour key drop, and at National and Alamo on Stanley, which publish drop-box windows. Enterprise’s downtown pages say after-hours returns aren’t available.
