Four airports and a train station, measured to 4 Atlantic Avenue
Everyone driving in comes up or down I-95. Where you collect the car sets the tax and the tolls.
| Start | To the terminal | Terminal to it | Tax at pickup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newark airport (EWR) | 92.5 mi · 1 hr 57 min | 95.1 mi · 2 hr 05 min | NJ 6.625% + $5 a day |
| JFK | 119.2 mi · 2 hr 42 min | 117.4 mi · 2 hr 40 min | NYC 20.875%, our arithmetic |
| BWI | 103.5 mi · 2 hr 14 min | 102.3 mi · 2 hr 14 min | Maryland 11.5% |
| Reagan National (DCA) | 135.5 mi · 3 hr 01 min | 135.5 mi · 3 hr 03 min | Virginia 10% |
| Dulles (IAD) | 159.6 mi · 3 hr 32 min | 156.4 mi · 3 hr 31 min | Virginia 10% + $3 a day (survey) |
| Union Station, Washington | 130.5 mi · 2 hr 54 min | 129.7 mi · 2 hr 53 min | District tax not read; not priced |
OpenStreetMap routing, no traffic, no stops; tolls are counted only where we checked the route’s roads and could read the toll. Read Oct 3, 2026. Our routing
PhilaPort’s directions: from the north, I-95 South to Exit 14 (Bartram Avenue/Essington Avenue) through 2027; from the south, I-95 North to Exit 15.
Free-flow times are the floor, not the forecast. The Turnpike prices weekends as peak all day. A router knows nothing about rush hour on I-95 — leave room.
A one-way car that ends here can’t end at the ship, because there’s no desk at the terminal — so the drop is PHL or a neighborhood desk on the hub.
The $6 Delaware River crossing, and the New Jersey tolls we couldn’t read
From the north, one toll is certain, and the rest live on the Turnpike’s calculator.
The Walt Whitman, Ben Franklin, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross bridges charge a car $6, westbound only — New Jersey into Pennsylvania (schedule effective Sept 1, 2024); the page doesn’t list a separate E-ZPass price.
From New Jersey we count the $6 Walt Whitman Bridge toll into Pennsylvania; the New Jersey Turnpike comes on top and we couldn’t read its amount.
The New Jersey Turnpike charges by distance and time of day (peak is 7–9 AM and 4:30–6:30 PM weekdays and all weekend), but its 2026 rate table wouldn’t read reliably for us, so we leave it out of the totals — check the NJTA calculator.
From JFK the routing crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge: MTA lists $9.79 on a non–New York E-ZPass and $12.03 by mail; we didn’t confirm which direction it charges.
The upriver Delaware bridges (Trenton–Morrisville, Scudder Falls on I-295, I-78, I-80 and others) charge $2 with E-ZPass or $5 by plate since Jan 1, 2026; we couldn’t confirm which direction. Our routes don’t cross any of them.
So the bridge is the floor for any New Jersey start, not the whole toll bill.
A Newark or JFK car to the PhilaPort terminal, New Jersey’s tax against New York’s
Two airports, two states, and two very different tax lines on the same drive south.
The rental, line by line
The $33 base is Discover Cars’ Newark “from” price, updated Sept 18, 2026, when its average was $68; its JFK page said “from $53” on Sept 30. Type the rate you’re offered. For Newark, New Jersey’s 6.625%, its $5 daily security fee and the survey’s $8.04 facility charge are in. Switch to JFK and New York City’s 20.875% replaces them, our arithmetic. Fuel covers the Newark drive, about 92 miles at 30 mpg and $4.45; JFK runs about 27 miles longer. The drop box starts at $0 because no company published a fee for this trip.
Newark’s Rental Car Center is in the Terminal A parking garage, levels 1 to 3 — walkable from Terminal A, or the AirTrain from B and C.
New Jersey: 6.625% sales tax plus a $5-a-day Domestic Security Fee, first 28 days only. A consultant’s airport survey adds an $8.04 daily facility charge at Newark, in effect since Feb 1, 2026.
JFK’s rental counters are at Federal Circle, by the free AirTrain from the terminals. New York City stacks 8.875% sales tax and two 6% rental taxes, 20.875% by our arithmetic, and the survey lists no facility charge there.
At those “from” prices a Newark one-way lands near $68 before any drop charge, and a JFK one near $88 before the Verrazzano, our arithmetic. The $20 gap in the “from” prices does that work, not the tax — on these inputs Newark’s fees and tax come to about $16 and JFK’s tax to about $11.
Both totals carry the bridge and nothing else from the toll roads — add the Turnpike from NJTA’s calculator before you compare with the train.
Up I-95 from BWI or Washington, with the Harbor Tunnel, Delaware’s plaza and Maryland’s 11.5%
From Maryland every toll is published, and one of them charges only on the way north.
Driving up from BWI or Washington we count three tolls: the Harbor Tunnel ($4 on an out-of-state E-ZPass, $6 by video), the JFK Highway ($8 or $12) and Delaware’s $5.
Maryland’s I-95 JFK Memorial Highway charges northbound only, at the plaza a mile north of the Tydings Bridge over the Susquehanna: $8 on an out-of-state E-ZPass or plate, $12 by video. That’s the direction you drive to the ship, so it’s in the totals here, and free on the way home.
Delaware’s I-95 toll at Newark is $5 for a car, cash or E-ZPass, since Aug 15, 2025; we couldn’t confirm whether it charges both ways.
Northbound that’s $17 on another state’s E-ZPass, or $23 by video, our arithmetic. Heading home south it drops to $9 or $11, since the JFK Highway bills only one way.
BWI’s Rental Car Facility is at 7432 New Ridge Road, by free shuttle from the Arrivals level, Doors 1, 11 and 16. Maryland taxes short-term car rentals at 11.5%, and the survey puts BWI’s facility charge at $5.75 a day.
A BWI one-way at Discover Cars’ “from $54” (Oct 2, 2026) comes to about $99 with all three tolls on E-ZPass, our arithmetic — before any drop charge.
Virginia (both Washington airports) taxes a rental at 10%; the survey lists $3 a day at Dulles and no charge at Reagan National. Reagan’s page showed “from $55” the same day, with Dulles about 24 miles further out.
If you’re sailing from Baltimore instead, our Philadelphia-to-Baltimore drive covers the same road south.
What six companies say about dropping a Newark, JFK or BWI car in Philadelphia
None of them prints a price for this drive. Each one says how it decides.
| Company | What its one-way page says |
|---|---|
| Avis | Avis says most locations charge no one-way fee, with any fee shown at step three of booking; its PHL page says one-ways to nearby cities are available |
| National | National says there’s typically no drop charge between airport locations |
| Enterprise | Enterprise says some one-ways carry a drop or mileage charge, shown when you book |
| Alamo | Alamo says the same, and that the charge varies by location and season |
| Hertz | Hertz sets one-way charges case by case |
| Budget | Budget charges at least $45 if you drop somewhere other than booked without telling it |
From each company’s own one-way page, read Sept 27, 2026, and Avis’s PHL page, read Oct 3. Checked Oct 3, 2026
No company published a Newark-, JFK-, BWI- or Washington-to-Philadelphia drop fee on the pages we read. The fee, if there is one, shows up in the quote — not on any policy page we read.
National’s airport-to-airport line points to one move — set the drop at PHL, not Essington Avenue. Then compare the two totals.
Budget’s $45 minimum is the price of a surprise, not a one-way fee. It applies when you drop somewhere you never told Budget about.
Our one-way guide covers drop charges across every port.
Amtrak to 30th Street, then a ride across the city to the ship
Amtrak’s Acela and Northeast Regional both stop at 30th Street, which makes the train the obvious rival from New York or Washington.
30th Street Station, 2955 Market Street, is about 10.5 miles from the terminal by road — 23 minutes without traffic, our routing.
From there, ride SEPTA’s Airport Line to PHL and take a cab the last stretch, or take a cab the whole way. The should-you-rent page has the fare.
Amtrak prices only in its booking engine — we can’t set a ticket against the totals above. Get the fare, then compare.
National lists a branch at 30th Street Station. We didn’t confirm its hours, so call before you plan a pickup around it.
Leaving a car at Washington’s Union Station instead runs from $39 for 25 hours to $416 for 384 to 408 hours — worth knowing if you’d thought of parking in Washington and riding up.
Pricing a one-way into Philadelphia for a Norwegian sailing
Search with the drop set to PHL, then again to a neighborhood desk. The drop charge, not the daily rate, will usually separate them.
Returning in the neighborhood? Mind the hours — weekend desks near the ship close by 1 PM.
- Pick-up: Newark’s Rental Car Center
- One-way fee in the total shown
- Taxes and fees shown before you pay
- Free cancellation up to 48 hrs before pickup
Driving to a Philadelphia cruise from New York or Washington
How far is Newark airport from the Philadelphia cruise terminal?
About 92.5 miles and just under two hours without traffic, by our routing, most of it on the New Jersey Turnpike. The return is about 95.1 miles.
What tolls are there driving from New York to the Philadelphia cruise port?
The Delaware River bridge into Pennsylvania is $6, westbound only. The New Jersey Turnpike charges by distance and time of day, and from JFK the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge lists $9.79 on a non–New York E-ZPass. We couldn’t read the Turnpike’s amount, so check NJTA’s calculator.
Should you rent at Newark or JFK to drive to a Philadelphia cruise?
On the “from” prices we saw, Newark showed $33 a day (Sept 18, 2026) and JFK $53 (Sept 30), and New Jersey taxes a rental at 6.625% plus $5 a day against New York City’s 20.875%, our arithmetic. Your quotes will differ, so compare the totals.
How much are the tolls from Baltimore to Philadelphia?
$17 northbound on an out-of-state E-ZPass, our arithmetic: $4 at the Harbor Tunnel, $8 on the JFK Highway and $5 at Delaware’s I-95 plaza. MDTA bills the JFK Highway northbound only, so the trip back south is $9.
Can you rent a car one way from Newark airport to Philadelphia?
Yes, though no company published a drop fee for it on the pages we read. National says airport-to-airport one-ways typically carry no drop charge, so try PHL as the drop.
How far is 30th Street Station from the Philadelphia cruise terminal?
About 10.5 miles by road, 23 minutes without traffic, by our routing. SEPTA’s Airport Line runs from 30th Street to PHL, and a cab or rideshare covers the rest.
