Ponant against Silversea: deeper ice, or an easier way in
One line sails Le Commandant Charcot, which Cruise Industry News calls the only PC2 passenger ship, toward the North Pole. The other flies you over the Drake and puts a butler in every suite. Decide which of those you’re buying, then compare the fares.
Book Ponant for reach. Book Silversea for ease. Charcot is the ship for 90° North, the Weddell Sea and a full loop of Antarctica in 2028, and Ponant’s other ships add Japan, Indonesia and French Polynesia. Silversea’s fly cruises skip the Drake, Silver Origin covers the Galápagos, and every suite comes with a butler.
The fares overlap more than they differ: drinks, gratuities and Wi-Fi are in on both. Ponant’s prices reach print through the trade press; Silversea quotes on request.
The culture question is a footnote, not a dealbreaker, and narrower than people expect. Ponant’s ships run in French and English by rule. Ask yourself whether that’s the charm or the catch — then pick the region first.
Three wins each, and three blanks
We put the scorecard up front on this page. The sections after it explain each row.
Charcot is PC2, which Cruise Industry News calls unique among passenger ships, and sells 90° North and the Weddell Sea. Silver Endeavour is PC6.
Silversea flies 14 Endeavour voyages both ways in 2026–27. The Ponant Antarctic voyages we logged sail from Ushuaia, Valparaíso or Timaru.
Ponant adds the North Pole, Japan, Indonesia and French Polynesia. Silversea adds the Galápagos. Both sail the Kimberley. A dead heat.
Silversea lists unlimited champagne, spirits and up to 50 wines. Ponant’s open bar is included, but a 2026 agency listing shows premium spirits as extra on Charcot.
Both included. Ponant’s Wi-Fi announcement says “most regions”, so expect gaps near the poles on either line.
Every Charcot cabin and every Explorer cabin has a balcony or terrace. On Silver Cloud, Silversea says 80% of suites have a veranda.
Silversea’s fare page includes all landings and guided tours on expedition voyages. Ponant’s inclusion is documented for its 2028–29 Antarctic program.
Ponant’s polar and Kimberley ships date from 2010 to 2021. Silversea’s polar ships date from 1994, 1995 and 2021.
Ponant requires bilingual French and English crew, per Seatrade. We found no Silversea language policy on the pages we read.
Five 2027 Ponant Kimberley departures waive the solo supplement, per Seatrade. We found no published Silversea expedition supplement.
We could verify Smithsonian Journeys’ Ponant terms and Silversea’s refundable deposit, but neither line’s standard schedule. Unknown on both sides.
Fit scores out of 10, not quality scores. A “?” means a line doesn’t publish that figure in the sources we read, so the row is left unscored for that side. Ponant facts come from its announcements as reported by the trade press. Rechecked November 1, 2026.
On published facts this is a draw, and we won’t dress it up as anything else. Ponant takes the ice, the cabins and the age of the fleet — the hardware rows. Silversea takes the Drake, the bar and the landings in writing — the rows about what’s handled for you.
The blanks fall mostly on Silversea’s side, because it prints less. The payment row is blank on both — neither line’s own direct-booking schedule was something we could verify. Read the rows that matter to you, not the total.
PC2 against PC6, and what each buys you
Most of this comparison comes down to these two ships. Here they are, figure for figure.
Le Commandant Charcot
245 guests, 123 suites and staterooms, 235 crew. A PC2 hull with LNG-electric hybrid power, delivered in 2021. It sells the Geographic North Pole, the Weddell Sea and, from January 11, 2028, a 62-day circumnavigation of Antarctica.
Silver Endeavour
220 guests, 110 suites, 207 crew. A PC6 hull, built for Crystal in 2021 and bought by Royal Caribbean Group in 2022. It runs Silversea’s fly cruises from King George Island and Svalbard in summer.
PC2 is the second-highest polar class. It’s why Charcot can push through drifting pack ice toward 90° North when conditions allow — a hull rating, not a promise of the Pole.
Endeavour’s PC6 hull covers the work Silversea sells it for: the Antarctic Peninsula and Svalbard. Silversea’s Arctic program reaches about 80° North, per the trade press, and no North Pole voyage appears in the catalog we read.
Charcot sells where you can go. Endeavour sells how easily you get there.
Timing matters too. Charcot spends winter 2026–27 in the Baltic, Scandinavia and the St. Lawrence, per Cruise Industry News, and returns to Antarctica in October 2027. If you want Charcot in the south, look at 2027–28. Compare the rest of each fleet in our Ponant fleet guide and Silversea ship guide.
Life aboard, only where it’s on record
Tap each card for the detail and its source. Where nothing is documented, the card says so.
We kept this section to what a source actually says. That leaves Ponant’s side fuller than Silversea’s, because Ponant has spoken publicly about language and guest mix, and Silversea, on the pages we read, hasn’t.
If a fully English-speaking ship matters more than the French table, tell us before you book, and we’ll ask both lines about your sailing.
Every row a buyer asks about
Bold marks a published figure or inclusion. “Not found” means we looked and the source we could read didn’t say.

Ponant’s column carries a caveat. Ponant’s own website couldn’t be read for our checks, so its figures come from announcements reported by Cruise Industry News, Seatrade, TravelPulse and Luxury Travel Advisor, plus Smithsonian Journeys’ terms.
Smithsonian’s terms govern its co-branded sailings only — a direct Ponant booking may differ.
Silversea’s column has the opposite problem: its own pages load, but they leave out the solo rate and the payment date.
Either way, the answer is the same. Get the deposit, the payment date and the cancellation steps on the invoice before the money moves.
Who sails where, month against month
Each region gets one Ponant row and one Silversea row, so the windows sit side by side.
Ponant and Silversea, paired by region
Ponant rows from its announced 2026–28 programs as reported in the trade press; Silversea rows from its voyage catalog. Tap a month for the voyage behind it.
The two calendars nearly overlap in the south and the north. They part in the places only one line goes — and those are often the reason to choose. Ponant’s Charcot works a northern winter that Silversea doesn’t sail, and Silversea holds the Galápagos alone.
Notice the years in each row’s subtitle. Ponant’s Antarctic notes describe 2027–28, while Silversea’s describe the season that starts now. Read our Antarctica, polar bear, Kimberley and Galápagos visitor sites guides, then find the dark cell that matches your month.
The true-cost calculator, Ponant beside Silversea
Price the two lines the same way
Choose a voyage. Ponant’s reported from fares load in; Silversea’s start at $0 for the quote you were given.
Ponant fares are the lowest published “from” prices per person in US dollars, as reported by Luxury Travel Advisor (2027–28 Antarctica) and Travel + Leisure (2027 North Pole). We found no Ponant Kimberley fare we could log. Silversea shows no fares on the pages we read on November 1, 2026; its land-program prices are its own published “from” prices per guest. Both lines run offers; your invoice governs.
Ponant’s Emblematic Antarctica works out near $1,400 a night before flights, on our arithmetic. Type Silversea’s quote into the next line and the gap, or the lack of one, shows up at once.
Compare the Kimberley pair with both fares typed in. Then ask us for the flights — they move the total more than the bar does.
How the hulls compare in size
Switch tabs between guests and cabins. Navy is Ponant, teal is Silversea; the two flagships are highlighted.
The two fleets sit in the same band, roughly 180 to 275 guests, with one outlier each: Ponant’s 64-guest sailing yacht and Silversea’s 100-guest Silver Origin.
Ponant’s Explorers are the smaller ships in the polar-capable middle, though our sources place them in the Kimberley, Japan and Polynesia rather than Antarctica. Ask us which hull your date uses before you count heads.
Ponant, Silversea, or neither
The North Pole or the Weddell Sea is the trip
Charcot’s PC2 hull is the only one in this comparison selling 90° North, from $36,190 for 12 nights with Paris flights included.
You want a published price and a French table
Emblematic Antarctica starts at $14,070 for 12 days, and the bilingual ships serve French cooking.
You’d fly over the Drake if you could
You can. Fourteen Silver Endeavour voyages fly both ways in 2026–27, with a stay at The Cormorant at 55 South.
You want the Galápagos, or a butler
Silver Origin sails the islands almost every week, and every Silversea suite comes with butler service.
You want the Kimberley, all-inclusive
Both sail it in 2027 on ten-night voyages. Pick by date and ship, then compare the two totals.
You want a naturalist-first ship built around a National Geographic team
That’s Lindblad’s whole pitch, built around its naturalist teams. Price it beside these two.
Neither line is the safe choice, and neither is the risky one; the difference is the map, not the standard. Name the region and the month, and the right one usually names itself.
Ponant or Silversea, answered plainly
Is Ponant or Silversea better for the polar regions?
It depends how far in you want to go. Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot carries a PC2 polar class, which Cruise Industry News describes as unique among passenger ships, and sells the Geographic North Pole and the Weddell Sea's emperor penguins. Silversea's strongest polar ship, Silver Endeavour, is PC6, and its edge is access: 14 Endeavour voyages in 2026-27 fly both ways over the Drake Passage from Puerto Williams. Pick Ponant for the deepest ice, Silversea for the easiest way onto the Peninsula.
Will an American feel at home on a French Ponant ship?
Most will, going by what's documented. Seatrade Cruise News reported in 2019 that Ponant requires its crew to speak French and English at minimum, that menus, daily programs and TV run in both languages, and that North Americans made up about 40% of guests. Expect French cooking and French-speaking guests aboard. On Silversea's side, the pages we read don't describe an onboard language policy or guest mix, so we don't characterize one; what's documented is a butler in every suite and Royal Caribbean Group as the owner.
Which fare includes more, Ponant's or Silversea's?
They're close, with different edges. Both include drinks, gratuities and Wi-Fi. Silversea adds a butler for every suite, unlimited champagne, spirits and up to 50 wines, and all landings and guided tours on expedition voyages. Ponant's published inclusions, as reported by the trade press, are meals, an open bar and minibar, 24-hour room service, gratuities, port charges and Wi-Fi in most regions; a 2026 agency listing shows premium spirits as extra on Charcot. Ponant bundles some gateway flights, such as Paris to Longyearbyen on the North Pole voyages.
Does Ponant or Silversea publish its prices?
Ponant's fares reach print through the trade press: Emblematic Antarctica from $14,070 for 2027-28, the Weddell Sea's emperor penguins on Charcot from $26,000, and the 12-night Geographic North Pole from $36,190 per person. Silversea shows no fare on the voyage pages we read and prices by quote. Both run offers, so confirm any fare for your date.
What are the deposit and final-payment terms?
We couldn't confirm either line's standard terms for direct bookings. On Smithsonian Journeys' co-branded Ponant sailings, the deposit is 25% and final payment is due 90 days before sailing. Silversea's All-Inclusive Plus fare carries a fully refundable deposit, but we didn't find its standard final-payment date for expeditions. We confirm both on your invoice before you pay.
Does either line sail the Galápagos?
Silversea does, with Silver Origin, a 100-guest ship built for the islands and sailing seven-night round trips from San Cristóbal almost every week. Ponant's programs in the sources we read don't include the Galápagos.
Is travel insurance required on Ponant or Silversea?
On Smithsonian Journeys' Ponant sailings, a travel protection plan isn't required, but you must certify that you carry medical insurance; we couldn't verify Ponant's own direct-booking conditions. We didn't find a published Silversea evacuation minimum. Buy strong evacuation cover for either: the CDC says a remote medical evacuation can cost more than $250,000.
Charcot or the fly cruise? We’ll price both, all in.
Tell us where, when and who’s coming. We’ll confirm Ponant’s current fare and terms, get Silversea’s quote, and set both totals side by side with the flights each one leaves out.

Where every row came from
Ponant’s own website couldn’t be read for our checks, so every Ponant figure comes from its announcements as reported by the trade press above, matching our Ponant guide. Silversea figures are Silversea’s own, matching our Silversea guide. The scorecard, the lean marker, the per-night arithmetic and the picks are our judgement, not either line’s. Fares change often; your invoice governs.

The voyage, the gateway night, and the cover that matters out there.
Expedition trips have more moving parts than a Caribbean week: a charter flight, a night in a gateway city, gear lists and an evacuation clause the line sets for you. We book them together and check that the dates and the fine print agree.
