Swan Hellenic: the lecture comes ashore

Swan Hellenic began taking scholars and their students around ancient Greece in the 1950s. Today it runs three small polar-class ships, and it sells Antarctica, West Africa and the Solomon Islands with the same idea: an expedition with a historian aboard.

The short answer

Swan Hellenic sells the polar classics plus West Africa, Melanesia and the Amazon. Its fare carries gratuities, house drinks, entry-level Wi-Fi, port taxes and one shore excursion per port, and its three ships take 152 to 192 guests.

The trade-offs sit in the paperwork. Insurance is mandatory, a single supplement usually applies, and Arctic fares were “on request” on the line’s own pages on November 1, 2026. The company also spent 2022 to 2025 untangling its ships from a sanctioned Russian lessor; it now owns all three.

Book it for the itinerary and the lectures, not the suites — then price it against one other line.

01
Cultural expedition, defined by the line

A historian in the Zodiac, not just a naturalist

Four parts of the team, each from Swan Hellenic’s own pages or releases.

In our reading, most expedition lines lead with wildlife. Swan Hellenic leads with people — the ones who lived there, and the ones who study them.

That’s why its 2027 map runs from Mauritania’s Banc d’Arguin to Raja Ampat and the Sepik River. CEO Andrea Zito told Cruise Industry News in May 2026 that the West African calls carry authorization from local tourism ministries.

Ice, wildlife and penguins, yes. But the brochure’s word is “discovery”.

There’s a business reason too. Zito says the ships can’t sail empty between the poles, so the shoulder months fill with cultural voyages.

Tap each card for the detail. If lectures matter more to you than the hot tub, ask us for the speaker list on your departure before you pay.

The company reports July 2026 revenue up 170% on a year earlier and Antarctic bookings 32% ahead. It gives no absolute figures.

Company figures

On the public record, the sanctions dispute ended with the July 2025 purchase of SH Minerva; we found no later sanctions action. In May 2022 Zito told Seatrade Cruise News, “The company is not under sanctions because it broke ties with any Russian owners.” Zito added that the only Vodohod-linked parties still holding interests were EU citizens.

The operating company is Swan Hellenic Travel Limited, registered in Larnaca, Cyprus.

Swan Hellenic isn’t publicly listed. Swan Hellenic Limited files small-company accounts at Companies House, most recently for the year to February 28, 2026; we couldn’t confirm from public records who owns the Cyprus operating company or the ships. Its growth numbers are its own — company claims, not audited figures: guests up 53% and net revenue up 66% in the 2025–26 Antarctic season, per its March 2026 release.

We found no trade-press report of financial distress through November 1, 2026. Pay by credit card where you can, and buy the mandatory insurance with supplier-default cover.

The three ships split the year three ways. SH Minerva runs Antarctica, then crosses to New Zealand and spends spring in Asia. SH Vega goes north to Svalbard and Greenland, with Brazil and the Amazon on either side. SH Diana runs West Africa twice a year.

Europe appears as connecting legs, not a season: Amsterdam to Tromsø, Dakar to Lisbon, Lisbon to Casablanca. There’s no Galápagos, Kimberley or Alaska program on the destination pages we read — for those, start with our Galápagos, Kimberley and Alaska guides.

For the polar regions, our Antarctica, Arctic, Greenland and polar bear guides cover what each month trades away. Pick the region first and the ship second.

Swan Hellenic says its cruises are “all-inclusive regardless of the fare type.” On the pages we read, that holds for the onboard list — the difference is the travel around the ship, not the ship.

A waterproof backpack and a refillable bottle are yours to keep, and the self-service launderette is free. Laundry service, spa and premium drinks are not.

Kayaking is the line that wobbles. The Antarctic voyage page lists it as an extra-charge option, one pre-booked outing per guest, with no price. The FAQ says Arctic voyages include at least one session per guest in normal conditions.

Ask us which rule applies to your departure. Then decide whether you need Cruise Plus.

Price a Swan Hellenic voyage

Pick a voyage. Tick what you’ll add, and type your own figures where the line publishes none.

Antarctic fare as published on Swan Hellenic’s voyage page on November 1, 2026. Asia and Brazil fares are “from” prices in the line’s July and February 2026 announcements, per person, double occupancy; confirm today’s fare with us. Swan Hellenic runs frequent offers. Lines at $0 have no published price.

The included rows are long, and the gaps are specific — three numbers, not thirty. Flights, the mandatory insurance and the Cruise Plus difference are the three numbers to get first.

Ask us for those, then put the total next to another line’s.

06
Fares compared

What a night costs, and why the date matters

Brazil runs about $670 to $960 a night on the announced fares. Antarctica starts near $1,200 on a regular departure. The second tab is the one to study — same nine nights, about $5,000 apart.

07
Deposit, balance and cover

One deposit, one deadline

The deposit is 20%. Swan Hellenic’s FAQ holds a booking for four working days, then asks for 20% within five working days of written confirmation.

The balance is due 120 days before departure. Book inside that window and you pay in full.

We couldn’t read the cancellation charge schedule on the line’s site on November 1, 2026. Ask us for it in writing before the deposit goes in.

Insurance is required, not suggested. The FAQ makes it mandatory but sets no evacuation minimum. The CDC puts a remote evacuation above $250,000. Compare plans in our expedition insurance guide before you buy.

Solo, children, health

The fine print worth reading twice

Single supplementSwan Hellenic’s FAQ says one applies, and some departures waive it. Its September 2026 offer adds special solo rates on 33 selected 2027 voyages.
35% of the adult fareFor children aged 6 to 16 in a third or fourth berth with two full-paying adults, per the FAQ. Polar voyages aren’t suited to under-8s without the captain’s permission.

Every ship has a doctor and a nurse through VIKAND, and the FAQ asks guests to be “Fit for Travel”. Hospital treatment is charged to your onboard account.

The onboard currency is the U.S. dollar. The dress code is relaxed, with no formal nights.

Offers move fast here. The free balcony upgrade on 33 selected 2027 voyages started September 10, 2026, with a choice of Gold Wi-Fi, a premium excursion, kayaking or a spa treatment on top.

Treat any offer as this month’s, not a standing term. Ask us what’s live on your date.

Who it fits

Book Swan Hellenic, or pass

Our judgement, built on the line’s published terms. We earn a commission when we book any of these lines, and we say so plainly when another line fits you better.

Swan Hellenic fits if

The lecture program is half the reason you’re going

Guides, speakers and lecturers sail on every ship, with SETI scientists on select cruises. Ask for your departure’s list.

Swan Hellenic fits if

You’ve done Antarctica and want West Africa or Melanesia

Its 2027 schedule runs Dakar to Luanda on SH Diana and the Sepik River on SH Minerva.

Swan Hellenic fits if

You want tips, drinks and Wi-Fi in the fare

Both fare types include them. Add Cruise Plus if the itinerary needs a charter flight.

Look elsewhere if

You’re traveling with young children

Polar voyages aren’t suited to under-8s here. Lindblad takes children from 6 months on most voyages.

Look elsewhere if

You want helicopters or a submarine

None of the Swan Hellenic ship pages we read lists either. Price Quark for helicopters and Viking for submarines, adults only.

Look elsewhere if

You want butlers and the largest suites

The top Premium Suite we found is about 47 m². In our judgement Silversea and Seabourn sell more service theater.

Straight answers

What people ask before booking Swan Hellenic

What does a Swan Hellenic fare include?

More than most expedition fares put in writing. Swan Hellenic's own site says its cruises are all-inclusive whatever the fare type: your stateroom, meals, selected drinks, lectures, expedition activities, gratuities, entry-level Wi-Fi and port taxes. Its voyage pages add one selected shore excursion per port, all expedition landings, 24-hour room service and, in polar regions, a parka to keep. International flights, travel insurance, premium drinks, premium Wi-Fi, spa treatments and laundry service are extra.

What is the difference between Cruise Only and Cruise Plus?

The travel around the voyage. Both fares carry the same onboard inclusions, per Swan Hellenic's site. Cruise Plus adds the arrangements an itinerary needs to work, such as a pre-cruise hotel night, group transfers and charter flights. Swan Hellenic doesn't publish the price gap between the two on the pages we read, so ask us to quote both for your date.

Who owns Swan Hellenic now?

Public records give a partial answer. The UK company register lists CEO Andrea Zito as the person with significant control of Swan Hellenic Limited, holding 75% or more of its shares, notified December 6, 2022. That entry covers one company in the group, which isn't necessarily the owner of the ships or the operating company. We couldn't confirm from public records who owns the Cyprus operating company or the ships. The brand was revived in 2020 with the Russian river line Vodohod as major shareholder, and Seatrade Cruise News reported in May 2022 that the company says it cut ties with its Russian owners. The website is operated by Swan Hellenic Travel Limited of Larnaca, Cyprus.

Is travel insurance required on Swan Hellenic?

Yes. Swan Hellenic's FAQ makes insurance mandatory for all passengers and strongly recommends cover for cancellation, medical costs, emergency evacuation and baggage. It doesn't publish a minimum evacuation amount on the pages we read. The CDC puts a medical evacuation from remote places at over $250,000, so check the evacuation limit before you buy.

When is final payment due?

120 days before departure. Swan Hellenic's FAQ asks for a 20% deposit within five working days of written confirmation, and full payment at booking if you're inside 120 days. Travel Market Report's August 2026 roundup gives the same 120-day final payment. The cancellation charge schedule wasn't on the pages we could read, so ask us for it before you pay the deposit.

Can children sail with Swan Hellenic?

Yes, with limits. The FAQ says polar expeditions aren't suitable for children under 8 without the captain's permission, with a minimum age of 6. Children aged 6 to 16 sharing a cabin with two full-paying adults pay 35% of the adult fare. For younger children, Lindblad's minimum age is 6 months on most voyages.

Is there a single supplement?

Usually. Swan Hellenic's FAQ says a single supplement applies and some departures waive it. Its September 2026 upgrade offer adds special solo rates on 33 selected 2027 voyages, per Cruise Industry News. Solo deals rotate, so check the departure you want before you compare.

One advisor, the whole expedition

The voyage, the gateway night, and the cover that matters out there.

Expedition trips have more moving parts than a Caribbean week: a charter flight, a night in a gateway city, gear lists and an evacuation clause the line sets for you. We book them together and check that the dates and the fine print agree.

How we work. Seabound Journeys is an independent travel advisory. We aren’t affiliated with or endorsed by any cruise line on this page. When we book a voyage, the cruise line pays us a commission, at no extra cost to you; some links may be affiliate links, and they’re always labeled. None of that changes what we write. Fares, ships, itineraries and inclusions change often, so every figure here comes from the line’s own published materials on the date shown, and the line’s booking terms govern.
