The verdict

The Hassler is the splurge for the view, from the top of the Spanish Steps. Forbes rates it Five-Star, MICHELIN gives it One Key, and the hotel lists Imàgo, which it calls MICHELIN-starred, with a panoramic room over the city.

We couldn't route it to the port: the routing service turned us away. In a straight line it's about 38 miles to Largo della Pace, so plan on the same hour-plus as the other central hotels.

There's valet and charged self-parking, per MICHELIN, and no pets. Check-in is 2 PM and check-out noon.

Book it for dinner at Imàgo and the walk down the Steps, then a booked car or the train.

Book it if

  • You want the view from the top of the Spanish Steps
  • Dinner at Imàgo is the plan
  • You'll arrange a chauffeured car through the concierge

Look elsewhere if

  • You're bringing a pet — MICHELIN says no pets.
  • You want a pool.
  • You'd rather not carry bags down the Spanish Steps to a car.
