Nearest Airports to the Galveston Cruise Port

Two Houston airports, and neither is close. The port puts Hobby about 45 minutes from the terminals and IAH about an hour and a half, and no taxi fare to the island is published from either. The shared shuttles and the cruise lines’ transfers are how most people do it. Here’s what each one costs.

The short answer

Fly into Hobby if the fare is close. It’s about 45 minutes from the terminals by the port’s count, against an hour and a half from IAH, and the cruise-line transfers from Hobby cost less.

IAH is the bigger airport and the better bet for international connections. The shared shuttles charge the same from either, so the gap is mostly time. Land the day before if you can: it’s an hour or more of I-45 after the flight.

Pick Hobby if

  • You want the shortest drive to the island
  • You’re sailing Carnival or MSC and want the cheaper transfer
  • You might land on sail morning

Pick IAH if

  • You’re flying in from abroad, or your airline doesn’t fly to Hobby
  • The fare saving beats an extra 45 minutes on the road
  • You’re landing a day early anyway
The Map

Down I-45 to the island

From either airport it’s I-45 south, past League City and Texas City, over the causeway onto Galveston Island, then Harborside Drive to the terminals, per the port. The terminals are on the bay side; the Seawall hotels face the Gulf. Royal Caribbean sails from Terminal 10, MSC and Norwegian from 16, Carnival from 25, and Disney from 28. One way, before tip, as each company published it on September 25, 2026. The Galveston Shuttle’s $28 is its online fare; by phone it’s $55 from Hobby and $65 from IAH, with $20 for each extra bag. Carnival’s and MSC’s transfers are for their own guests. The private cars are “from” prices. Galveston Express quotes from $45 a person on its page and $30 in its page summary, so it isn’t priced here. Nobody publishes a taxi or rideshare fare to the island. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney and Princess sell transfers without a published Galveston price.

Heading home after the cruise? The Galveston Shuttle runs back to either airport for the same $28. Carnival’s transfer back is $41.99 to Hobby and $58.99 to IAH, and Carnival says not to book a flight before 1:30 PM.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

Carnival and MSC publish their own cut-offs. Beyond those, the yardstick is our rule of thumb, labelled as ours. Enter your landing time and the departure time from your cruise documents.

  • Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsLand by 12:00 PM to ride Carnival’s $41.99 transfer, which runs 10 AM to 12:30 PM.—
  • MSC transfer, MSC guestsMSC wants your flight on the ground at least 6 hours before the ship leaves.—
  • Shared shuttle or rideshare, any lineNo cut-off of its own. The port puts Hobby 45 minutes away and says to add 30 minutes for traffic. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 3 hours before the ship leaves.—
  • Carnival transfer, Carnival guestsLand by 11:30 AM to ride Carnival’s $58.99 transfer, which runs 10 AM to noon.—
  • MSC transfer, MSC guestsMSC wants your flight on the ground at least 6 hours before the ship leaves.—
  • Shared shuttle or rideshare, any lineNo cut-off of its own. The port puts IAH about 1.5 hours away and says to add 30 minutes for traffic. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 4 hours before the ship leaves.—

Whatever the ride, your cruise line’s check-in window is the real deadline. It’s printed in your boarding documents. The port says most cruisers arrive between 10:30 and 11 AM and to add at least 30 minutes for traffic on I-45 and the causeway, which is the whole case for flying in the day before.

Coming Home

The morning you’re back

Ships clear early, flights leave late, and Houston is an hour or more away. Put in your flight and this works out the ride, the wait, and what to do with the bags.

Partner links (transfers, rental cars, luggage storage) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

Bus and Bags

Can you get to the port without a car?

Not by public transit from Houston. METRO buses run from both airports to downtown Houston only. The Splash, a Gulf Coast Transit District route that started in December 2025, runs between Texas City and the Strand, Monday to Saturday, 6 AM to 8 PM, but it doesn’t reach Houston or either airport.

So it’s a shuttle, a transfer, a rideshare or a rental car. The Galveston Shuttle says its stops include major hotels as well as the cruise terminals, and Galveston Express says it runs to Galveston hotels too.

Bags: the port publishes no luggage storage, but you can drop checked bags at the terminal curb before you park, per its FAQ. Bounce lists spots on the island from about $5.90 a bag a day and names none near the terminals.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

The day-before flight is the one move that takes sail-day timing off the table, and from Houston it matters more than most: an hour or more of I-45 sits between the runway and the ship. It costs a hotel night. It buys you the morning.

None of our top twenty runs a free airport shuttle. The TownePlace Suites, the Courtyard and the Grand Galvez list a paid car or shuttle from Hobby. For the rest, take the Galveston Shuttle to the hotel, and let a package shuttle or a short cab handle the morning.

FAQ

Galveston cruise airport FAQ

What is the closest airport to the Galveston cruise port?

William P. Hobby (HOU), in south Houston. The port calls it "just a 45-minute drive"; George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is "about 1.5 hours away". Scholes International, on the island itself, handles private and charter flights, not airlines. The island hotels in our top 20 put Hobby 41 to 50 miles away by their own counts.

Should I fly into Hobby or IAH for a Galveston cruise?

Hobby, if the fares are close. It's nearer, Carnival's transfer from Hobby is $17 a person cheaper than from IAH, and MSC's is $6 cheaper. IAH is the bigger airport and the better bet for international connections. The shared shuttles charge the same from either: the Galveston Shuttle is $28 a person one way, booked online.

How much is a taxi or Uber from Houston to the Galveston cruise port?

Nobody publishes a fare. Hobby's taxi page lists flat rates to downtown Houston ($29) and other Houston points, but none to Galveston, and IAH posts zone maps rather than fares. Rideshare picks up at Hobby's Curb Zone 5 and at marked doors outside baggage claim at IAH. For a price you know in advance, the shared shuttles are the safer bet.

Does Carnival run a transfer from the Houston airports?

Yes: $41.99 a person from Hobby, where your flight must land by noon, and $58.99 from IAH, landing by 11:30 AM. Coming home, Carnival says not to book a flight before 1:30 PM. MSC charges $25 from Hobby and $31 from IAH and wants you on the ground 6 hours before the ship leaves. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney and Princess sell transfers without a published Galveston price.

Can I fly in on the morning of my cruise?

It's tight. Carnival's transfer cut-offs are noon at Hobby and 11:30 AM at IAH, MSC wants you landed 6 hours before sailing, and the port says to add at least 30 minutes for traffic on I-45 and the causeway. With an hour or more of driving after the flight, we'd fly in the day before.

Is there a Priority Pass lounge at Hobby or IAH?

Not a regular lounge at Hobby: Priority Pass lists only a Gameway, a Chiroport and an XWELL there, and LoungePair sells no Hobby passes. IAH has six Priority Pass options, and LoungePair sells day passes for the Air France Lounge ($47 for two hours) and the KLM Crown Lounge ($42), both in Terminal D.

Is there a bus from Houston to the Galveston cruise port?

Not one that reaches the port. METRO buses run from both airports to downtown Houston only. The Splash, which started in December 2025, runs between Texas City and the Strand, Monday to Saturday, 6 AM to 8 PM, but it doesn't connect to Houston or either airport.

Can I fly home the same morning I get off the ship?

The port publishes no debarkation times. Carnival says not to book a flight before 1:30 PM, and MSC no sooner than 6 hours after the ship arrives. The Galveston Shuttle runs back to either airport for $28 a person, booked online. The Coming Home tool on this page works out the gap for your flight.
