Getting There · Marseille

Nearest Airport to the Marseille Cruise Port

Marseille Provence is close by road and awkward by bus. Our routing gives about 11.5 road miles from the airport to MPCT, roughly 17 minutes with no traffic — but there’s no direct public-transport link, and MSC says the bus-and-metro way can take around two hours. Below are the A1 bus, the taxi rank, Uber, the lines’ transfers and a check on your landing time.

The short answer

Fly into Marseille Provence. Our routing, from the airport’s point to MPCT’s Porte 4, gives about 11.5 road miles and 17 minutes with no traffic, and about 14.7 miles and 24 minutes to Terminal J4.

MSC calls it about 20 km and 20 to 50 minutes by car. That’s the same road with Marseille’s traffic on it, so budget MSC’s top end, not our empty-road minutes.

Public transport is the weak link. The tourist office says there’s no direct link from the airport to the cruise terminals, and MSC says the trip can take around two hours.

With checked bags, that leaves a taxi at about €50 (about US$55) per MSC, an Uber, your line’s transfer, or the A1 bus and the metro if you’re travelling light.

Take the A1 and the metro if

  • You’re staying near Saint-Charles or Joliette the night before
  • You can manage bags on the metro
  • You’re one or two people paying by the seat

Take a taxi, an Uber or a transfer if

  • You land the morning you sail
  • Three or four of you split one fare
  • Your line sells a transfer and you’d rather not think about it

The Ride

What the ride to the ship costs

The bus row is per person and covers only the airport to Saint-Charles — the metro and the port shuttle are on top, and the shuttle is free. The taxi row is per car, and it’s MSC’s estimate, not a fixed fare.

Travelers
A1 bus to Saint-Charles, single, per the tourist office—
Taxi to the port, MSC’s estimate—

One way, in euros, as published on October 3, 2026. The A1 return is €26 (about US$30), and a €16 (about US$18) single adds an RTM metro and bus ride; ages 12 to 25 pay €7 (about US$8) and 6 to 11 €5 (about US$6), per the tourist office. Under the 2022 taxi tariff the airport still links, the meter starts at €2.10 (about US$2) and charges €2.00 (about US$2) for each bag beyond three a passenger — we found no newer order, so treat those as a floor.

Viator lists Marseille port transfers by the group; on the day we read it, a private car from the airport to the port was US$95 and a van and sedan service US$86. Rental desks are at car-park level in front of Terminal 1, per the airport, and Discover Cars lists the airport from US$26 a day.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing on sail day? Check your timing

No line we read publishes a landing cut-off for Marseille, so both rows are our own margins, not a rule. Your boarding pass gives the departure; the airline gives the landing.

  • Taxi or Uber, any lineNo line publishes a cut-off. Our rule of thumb, not a line’s: land at least 3 hours before the ship leaves — MSC puts the drive at 20 to 50 minutes.—
  • A1 bus, metro and port shuttleOur margin, not a line’s: land at least 4 hours before departure — MSC says public transport can take around two hours.—

The line closes check-in well before the ship sails, so set the second box to the check-in time on your documents if you want the strict answer. From Porte 4, a green line painted on the ground leads you to the terminals, per the port authority.

Take the clock off sail day

Sleep in Joliette, one shuttle ride from Porte 4.

We ranked twenty hotels for a Marseille cruise, four of them in Joliette, the closest group to MPCT by our routing. Tell us which flight lands you in Marignane and we’ll pick the room that suits it.

Coming Home

The morning you’re back

No line we read publishes a debarkation timetable for Marseille. The free port shuttle runs back to Place de la Joliette on ship days, and there’s a taxi rank there. Give it your flight time and your best guess at walking off the ship; it shows the run to Marignane and how long you’d sit at the gate.

Partner links (transfers, rental cars, luggage storage) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

Bus, Metro and Bags

The A1, the metro and your suitcase

The A1 leaves the airport every 10 minutes from 07:00 to 20:00 and every 20 minutes otherwise, the first at 04:05 and the last at 01:50, per the airport’s timetable valid from July 1, 2026. It stops at Gare Saint-Charles, at the coach station on the rue Honnorat side. Buy the €16 single and the metro ride is already paid for, per the tourist office.

The airport says 30 to 50 minutes; the tourist office’s English page says 25, up to 50 at rush hour. Plan on the airport’s figure, not the shorter one.

From Saint-Charles, take metro M2, the red line, toward Capitaine Gèze to Joliette. On Place de la Joliette, the Grand Port Maritime’s free shuttle runs to Porte 4 every day a ship is in, and bus 35T runs only on cruise days, per the tourist office; RTM lines 35, 36 and 36 barré also serve Porte 4, with a ticket machine at the stop.

Nobody publishes the shuttle’s hours, so leave slack.

Bounce lists luggage storage around the city from €2.50 (about US$3) a day, with spots by the Vieux-Port and Saint-Charles at €4.50 (about US$5). On the way home, the tourist office’s MPCT listing names a Bag Mobile service that carries bags from the terminal to Saint-Charles; we didn’t find its price, so ask before you count on it.

For the terminals and the lines, see our Marseille cruise guide.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

Off an overnight flight from the States, the A1, the metro and the port shuttle are three changes with suitcases. Do them the evening before and sail morning is one short ride.

Three airport hotels in our twenty run a free shuttle from the terminals, the Hilton Garden Inn around the clock, though none runs one to the ship.

The Joliette hotels are the closest group to MPCT by our routing, and Place de la Joliette is where the free port shuttle leaves.

FAQ

Marseille cruise airport FAQ

What is the closest airport to the Marseille cruise port?

Marseille Provence (MRS), at Marignane. Our routing gives about 11.5 road miles from the airport to MPCT at Porte 4, roughly 17 minutes with no traffic, and about 14.7 miles to J4. MSC calls it about 20 km and 20 to 50 minutes by car. The gap between those minutes and ours is Marseille traffic, so plan on MSC's.

How much is the airport bus from Marseille airport to the city?

The A1 to Gare Saint-Charles is €15 single and €26 return, per the tourist office, or €16 single with an RTM metro and bus ride included; €7 for ages 12 to 25, €5 for 6 to 11, and free under 6. It runs every 10 minutes from 07:00 to 20:00, otherwise every 20, and takes 30 to 50 minutes, per the airport's 2026 timetable.

How do I get from Saint-Charles station to the cruise terminal?

Metro line M2, the red line, toward Capitaine Gèze, to Joliette. From Place de la Joliette the port's free shuttle runs to Porte 4 on every day a ship is in, and bus 35T runs only on cruise days, per the tourist office. MSC puts the metro-and-35T trip at 40 minutes to an hour from the station.

How much is a taxi from Marseille airport to the cruise port?

There's no fixed fare in the prefectoral tariff the airport links. MSC says to expect about €50. The rank is in front of Terminal 1, served around the clock by Taxis Aéroport, 04 42 14 24 44. The airport still links the prefecture's 2022 tariff, where the meter starts at €2.10 and adds €2.00 for each bag beyond three a passenger; we couldn't find a newer order online, so those figures may have gone up.

Is there Uber in Marseille?

Yes — Uber runs around the clock in Marseille, with UberX, UberXL and Taxi, per Uber. Its city page shows sample in-town fares, not an airport price, so check the app.

Do cruise lines run transfers from Marseille airport?

MSC sells one through your travel agent or its call centre, without a published price. Royal Caribbean says all its ports have transfers "at an additional fee", and Norwegian sells them in online check-in at least 4 days before you sail.

Can I take the train from Marseille airport?

The nearest station is Vitrolles-Aéroport Marseille Provence, with up to 73 trains a day, per the airport. A shuttle runs between it and the airport bus station, about 57 round trips a day, roughly 5 minutes, ticket from the driver. The airport doesn't print TER fares or times to Saint-Charles.

Should I fly into Nice instead for a Marseille cruise?

Only if the flights work much better. Our routing gives about 117.2 road miles from Nice airport to MPCT, roughly 129 minutes with no traffic. Marseille's airport bus page lists a Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Fréjus route, without fares.

Where can I store luggage in Marseille before a cruise?

Bounce lists luggage storage in Marseille from €2.50 a day, with spots by the Vieux-Port and Saint-Charles at €4.50, the Saint-Charles one open 24/7. At MPCT itself, the tourist office's terminal listing names a Bag Mobile service that takes bags from the cruise terminal to Saint-Charles; we didn't find its prices.

What time should my flight home be after a Marseille cruise?

No line we read publishes a rule for Marseille. Your disembarkation time is in your documents; with the airport about 17 minutes from MPCT on empty roads by our routing, the morning traffic is the variable, not the distance.
