Splurge Hotels · Marseille

The Nicest Night Before the Ship

Marseille’s most decorated nights are along the coast or out of town. Les Roches Blanches in Cassis holds two Michelin Keys, about 20.5 road miles from MPCT by our routing — the InterContinental above the Vieux-Port is the close one, about 4.8. Each card says what the hotel adds and what it leaves you to arrange on sail morning.

What kind of splurge is it?

Seven places made this list. Two also make our twenty: the InterContinental and the Sofitel. The other five are here on their Michelin Guide pages. Pick the kind of night below and the matching hotel lights up.

France classes hotels with official stars, and the Michelin Guide awards Keys for the stay itself — not the AAA Diamonds you’ll know from home. We print what a hotel, the tourist office or the Michelin Guide states, so “not stated” means unrated on the pages we read, not lesser.

The Trade

Splurge the night, and plan the morning

None of the seven runs a shuttle to the ship, and none prints a distance to MPCT. The numbers are ours, road routes with no traffic: the InterContinental about 4.8 miles, the Sofitel 5.5, the C2 Hotel 5.6, Les Bords de Mer 6.1, Le Petit Nice 6.9, Villa Gallici 16.7 and Les Roches Blanches 20.5.

Three of the seven print a breakfast price, and all three charge: €35 at the InterContinental, €30 at Les Bords de Mer and €48 at Villa Gallici. The other four don’t mention one, so ask when you book.

Parking runs €30 a day at Le Petit Nice and the C2 Hotel, €35 at Villa Gallici and €49 at the InterContinental, with a valet at Les Roches Blanches at a price nobody prints. Those are overnight rates; not one of the seven offers to keep the car for a week. MPCT’s own lot is €15 (about US$17) per 24 hours, per its operator.

The terminals and the lines that sail from Marseille are in our Marseille cruise guide — the hotel is the easy part once you know your terminal.

Names You’ll Hear

Renamed, mislabelled, or not what it seems

Renamed, and not by the port
Golden Tulip Villa Massalia
Now Villa M Marseille, per the Michelin Guide, which also lists the old name. It's on Place Louis Bonnefon in the 8e by the Prado beaches — far south of both terminals. Parking €20 (about US$20) a day; indoor and outdoor pools.
Not a splurge
Hôtel Maison Montgrand
Sometimes listed with the luxury set, but the tourist office classes it 3-star, with doubles from €75 to €400 (about US$85–450), breakfast €14 (about US$16) and a 400 m² garden.
Different hotel, same brand
Golden Tulip Marseille Euromed
Not the Villa Massalia. This one is the Joliette 4-star with a covered pool — and it's No. 1 in our twenty.
