Which Marseille desk opens first on the day you dock
A ship that docks at dawn on a Saturday meets a different set of desks from one that docks on a Monday.
| Desk | Saturday opens | Sunday opens | Monday opens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sixt, Marseille Arenc Euromed | Not printed | Not printed | 9:00 |
| Sixt, Marseille St-Charles station | 8:30 | 9:30 | 8:00 |
| Avis, Gare Marseille Saint-Charles | 9:00 | 10:00 | 8:00 |
| Enterprise, Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles | 8:00 | 8:00 | 8:00 |
| Sixt, Marseille Provence Airport | 7:30 | 7:30 | 7:30 |
| Hertz, Marseille Provence Airport | 8:00 | 8:30 | 7:30 |
From each brand’s own branch page, read Oct 3, 2026. “Not printed” means the page gives no hours for that day — Checked Oct 3, 2026
Monday is easy. Every desk on the list is open by 9, Arenc included.
The weekend is where the plan has to change — Arenc drops out, and Enterprise opens first at the station both days, at 8.
On Saturday Sixt follows at 8:30 and Avis at 9. On Sunday the gap widens: Sixt opens 90 minutes after Enterprise, and Avis two hours after.
Sixt at the airport opens at 7:30 every day, which is early, but that’s 11.5 road miles from MPCT before you’ve gone anywhere.
Which terminal you leave from changes the distances — MSC docks at MPCT, and other lines should say on your documents.
Book the pickup for an hour after the desk opens, not the minute it does: getting off a ship and across town takes longer than it looks on paper.
Leaving bags at St-Charles while you collect the car
Getting from the ship to a desk with everything you packed is the hard part of a post-cruise rental.
Bounce lists bag storage in Marseille from €2.50 (about US$3) a day, €4.50 (about US$5) at St-Charles, which is open 24/7, and €3.25 at a hotel by La Joliette.
Two bags for a day at St-Charles come to €9 (about US$10), our arithmetic — small money against five people queuing at a counter with suitcases.
Leave the bags, collect the car, come back for them — and price the storage per bag, not per group.
The port’s free shuttle runs between Gate 4 and Place de la Joliette on ship days, so disembark morning starts with a free ride, then the metro to the station — the should-you-rent page has the details.
Desks that take the car back after closing
If your flight is late or your Provence day runs long, the return matters more than the pickup.
Sixt lists “24h pickup 24h Return” here, with the key box at the entrance to the rental area in the Effia P1 car park, 7 Avenue du Général Leclerc.
Avis lists an after-hours return “24/7” at this branch. Europcar’s page describes a secure drop box, a “24/7 key box”.
After hours, Sixt says to park on the left after the booth and “drop the key in the key box located on the side of the SIXT building”.
Hertz takes a car back after hours only by prior arrangement, with the keys in its designated box.
Enterprise at St-Charles is the outlier. Its page says after-hours returns aren’t available, so 8:30 PM is the deadline.
Sixt Arenc names no key box and no after-hours return — don’t plan a Friday-evening drop there without a call first.
Photograph the fuel gauge and the dashboard before you post the keys — nobody will be there to agree what they said.
A car to the airport for your flight home, priced against a taxi
The last drive of the trip is short. The question is whether it’s worth renting a car for.
The rental, line by line
Station to airport, one day, two people, in euros; the booking screen has the real figure. €35 a day is our stand-in, not a rate anyone quoted. Fuel covers about 11.5 miles, our MPCT-to-airport routing, once you enter the pump price per litre; we found no official October price to put there. Europcar offers a St-Charles pickup with an airport return, so any one-way fee belongs in the drop box. VAT is assumed to be inside the quote, the station box starts at 0% with no surcharge printed, seats add nothing without a published price, and tolls aren’t counted. The taxi is MSC’s airport estimate run in reverse, which we assume rather than know. Dollars use the ECB rate of Oct 2, 2026, about $1.12 to the euro.
With the fuel box blank, the car comes to €35 (about US$40) at the defaults — the same ballpark as the €50 taxi MSC quotes, our arithmetic, before any station-to-airport fee.
A car only for the airport run is rarely worth the desk time. Take one if it also buys you a day in Aix or Cassis first.
Viator also listed a van-and-sedan transfer at $86 a group, about €77 — a booked ride with no desk at either end.
Royal Caribbean says “all ports have transfer services to and from the airport at an additional fee”, without a Marseille price. NCL sells transfers through online check-in, at least 4 days before sailing, with no Marseille price shown. MSC sells its own transfer through an agent or its call centre and prints no price on its port page.
No cruise line page we read gave an earliest-flight rule for Marseille — leave yourself a wide margin, not a tight one.
Driving on from Marseille after the ship
The end of a cruise can be the start of a Provence trip. The car fits that plan better than the airport run.
Heading to Nice for a flight is a one-way of about 117.2 road miles, a little over two hours free-flow by our routing. The Nice and Avignon page covers the fee wording.
Touring first? Aix is about 28 minutes from MPCT, and the Luberon an hour or more; the Provence page has the times and gate prices.
Either way, drop the car at a desk that will be open, or one with a key box, on the day you actually arrive.
Book the post-cruise car from St-Charles on a weekend
On a weekday, Arenc or the station both work. On a weekend, book St-Charles.
Search the station page with your docking date, not the day you sail. Civitavecchia and Venice have their own versions of this problem.
Euros come first throughout; dollar figures use the ECB’s reference rate of Oct 2, 2026, about $1.12 to the euro, so expect your card to differ slightly.

A rental car after a Marseille sailing: questions
Can I pick up a rental car in Marseille on a Saturday morning?
At St-Charles station, yes: Sixt opens at 8:30 on Saturdays, Enterprise at 8 and Avis at 9. Sixt Arenc, the closest desk to MPCT, prints no Saturday hours. The airport desks open at 7:30 (Sixt) and 8 (Hertz).
Where can I store luggage at Marseille St-Charles?
Bounce lists bag storage at St-Charles at €4.50 a day, open 24/7, and from €2.50 a day elsewhere in Marseille.
Does Enterprise Marseille St-Charles take after-hours returns?
No. Its branch page says after-hours returns aren’t available; it’s open daily from 8 AM to 8:30 PM. Sixt, Avis and Europcar at the same station do take cars back after closing.
Can I return a rental car at Marseille airport at night?
At Sixt, yes: after hours you park on the left after the booth and drop the key in the box on the side of the Sixt building. Hertz takes late returns only by prior arrangement.
Is it worth renting a car just to get from the cruise port to Marseille airport?
Rarely. MSC puts a taxi from the airport at around €50, and at our assumed €35 a day a one-day car comes close to that before fuel, plus the time at the desk. A car makes more sense if you’re touring Provence before your flight.
Do cruise lines offer transfers from Marseille port to the airport?
Royal Caribbean says all its ports have transfers at an extra fee, NCL sells them through online check-in at least four days before sailing, and MSC sells its own through an agent or call centre. None printed a Marseille price on the pages we read.
